The Production of Lexical Tone in Croatian
The production of lexical tone in Croatian Inauguraldissertation zur Erlangung des Grades eines Doktors der Philosophie im Fachbereich Sprach- und Kulturwissenschaften der Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität zu Frankfurt am Main vorgelegt von Jevgenij Zintchenko Jurlina aus Kiew 2018 (Einreichungsjahr) 2019 (Erscheinungsjahr) 1. Gutacher: Prof. Dr. Henning Reetz 2. Gutachter: Prof. Dr. Sven Grawunder Tag der mündlichen Prüfung: 01.11.2018 ABSTRACT Jevgenij Zintchenko Jurlina: The production of lexical tone in Croatian (Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Henning Reetz and Prof. Dr. Sven Grawunder) This dissertation is an investigation of pitch accent, or lexical tone, in standard Croatian. The first chapter presents an in-depth overview of the history of the Croatian language, its relationship to Serbo-Croatian, its dialect groups and pronunciation variants, and general phonology. The second chapter explains the difference between various types of prosodic prominence and describes systems of pitch accent in various languages from different parts of the world: Yucatec Maya, Lithuanian and Limburgian. Following is a detailed account of the history of tone in Serbo-Croatian and Croatian, the specifics of its tonal system, intonational phonology and finally, a review of the most prominent phonetic investigations of tone in that language. The focal point of this dissertation is a production experiment, in which ten native speakers of Croatian from the region of Slavonia were recorded. The material recorded included a diverse selection of monosyllabic, bisyllabic, trisyllabic and quadrisyllabic words, containing all four accents of standard Croatian: short falling, long falling, short rising and long rising. Each target word was spoken in initial, medial and final positions of natural Croatian sentences. -

Around 60 million pople were migrating in different directions, most of them within Central and Eastern Europe. Immediately after the war, 20 million people were displaced.1 During that period, all national/ethnic groups in Croatia were affected by different kinds of migration. As regards minorities, German and Italian populations were especially affected by migrations, Hungarian to a lesser extent. These minorities had a signifi- cant share in the overall population. Smaller national/ethnic groups, such as Czechs2, Poles and Jews3 were also moving after the war.4 Serb population was the target of the NDH revenge, as a reaction to the oppression against the Croats in the Yugoslav 1 D. Some individuals were awarded the status of the so-called „Honorary Aryan“ for „hav- ing obliged the Croatian people“, in the opinion of represetatives of the Ustasha authorities. -

As in all previous competitions, this cultural manifestation is going to tone our town with a rich spectre of colourful human voices for four days. Singing, being one of the most natural forms of artistic expression, has been an inevitable part of cultural heritage of Zadar and its citizens. I am deeply convinced that the joy of singing is being increasingly meliorated through this biennial manifestation and that singing and music are more successfully promoted through all the activities around the Competition. I particularly hope that these efforts will reach the youth! The international character of the Competition exceptionally pleases me. Our singers have the opportunity to meet with singers from all around the world and exchange invaluable experiences, which create genuine, not just momentarily trendy virtual connections. The City of Zadar and Zadar Concert Office, the organiser of the manifestation, are delighted to raise those numerous possibilities of connecting, whose common denominator is music – an art that is woven into the fabric of this town. -

1 Talking Women
TALKING WOMEN 1 When the EUSR gender team proposed me a plan to reach out to the people in Kosovo and discuss gender, I immediately liked the idea. In January 2019, I launched a series of debates under the title: EU Gender Talks: Because We Make a Difference. Inequalities between women and men in Kosovo are still prevalent. So, the purpose was to have monthly discussions on different topics in relation to gender, with the aim of Ambassador raising awareness, contribute to the Nataliya Apostolova change of mentalities and improve Head of the EU Office in Kosovo / EU Special Representative gender equality policies in Kosovo. The 12 sessions have gathered more than 500 participants from Kosovo institutions, civil society organisations, EU Member States representatives and different audiences and topics made every session take other international stakeholders. They have included diverse shapes and sizes. Women were talking loud and interesting topics such as Women in Business, Gender we wanted the impact of their voices to be multiplied. and Youth, Gender in the Electoral Cycle, Women in This book ‘Talking Women’ is the result of it. I hope you Media and Women and the Environment, just to name enjoy reading it as much as I have. I can assure you that a few. the conclusions of the EU Gender Talks, together with the interviews of the 12 featured women, are stirring the Women are underrepresented in Kosovo’s public life, EU Office/EUSR policies and activities, as well as our particularly when it comes to decision-making positions. political dialogues with Kosovo authorities. -

UNIVERZA V LJUBLJANI FAKULTETA ZA DRUŽBENE VEDE Klemen Domjo Sprejemanje hrvaške popularne glasbe v Sloveniji in slovenske popularne glasbe na Hrvaškem Diplomsko delo Ljubljana, 2009 UNIVERZA V LJUBLJANI FAKULTETA ZA DRUŽBENE VEDE Klemen Domjo Mentor: izr. prof. dr. Ključne besede: Nacionalni stereotipi, mediji, jugonostalgija, domača in tuja glasba. -
