The aim of the National Archives of Hungary’s project of several years was to create a versatile, illustrated, well-search- able and expandable online database, in which we could process the data of all the original patents of arms and related documents held in our insti- tution. Our collections of patents of arms are being built since the founda- tion of our institution, and contain over 2000 original parchment charters granting mainly Hungarian and Transylvanian nobility along with heraldic achievements. At present, the National Archives of Hungary has completed the digitization and processing of all this material, except for the 131 medi- eval (pre-1526) charters, which is to be covered in the near future.     1 THE ORDER OF THE DRAGON AS REFLECTED IN HUNGARIAN AND CROATIAN HERALDRY Ivan Mirnik The Order of the Dragon On March 18, 2006 an exhibition (TAKÁCS ed. 2006) opened at the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts, dedicated to Emperor and King Sigismund of the house of Luxemburg (b. Feb. 15, 1368 – King of Hungary, Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia 1378-1437 – Margrave of Brandenburg 1378 – crowned King of Hungary March 31, 1387 - Roman King July 21, 1411 – crowned King of Bohemia July 28, 1420 – crowned Roman Emperor in Rome May 31, 1433 - d. Znaim, Dec. 9, 1437). In July of the same year it was opened in Luxemburg, at the Musée national d'histoire et art, in a reduced version. Before this exhibition, a symposium was held in Luxemburg in 2005, as an introduction to the forthcoming exhibition (PAULY – REINERT eds. 2005). The authors of both papers presented at the symposium and of the exhibition catalogue have succeeded not only in bringing this ruler and his era closer to us, but also from a historical distance to present his character and deeds in an objective manner. The exhibition itself was excellent and well conceived. At the Emperor Sigismund Exhibition one could, in one room (Section IV – Die Welt der Drachenritter), admire all the paraphernalia of the Order of the Dragon. It was a unique opportunity to see these items, gathered from all over Europe, assembled in one place for the first and probably the last time in history. This could offer a more satisfactory, but unusual answer to the emerging problems regarding the interpretation of the composition. The study attempts to reveal how Catullus’ poem could reach Mathias of Szente, as well as the possible connotations it might have awaken on a broader range of the society. Keywords: coat-of-arms, Mathias of Szente, Catullus On January 31, 1456 in the town of Győr, Ladislaus the Posthumous (Ladislaus V as King of Hungary and Croatia) granted arms of nobility to the literatus Mathias of Szente, also appearing as of Sáró, and other members of his line.1 The letters patent contains only a heraldic miniature, and no written description is presented for it.     The Early Hungarians This volume shows to the En­ glish reader the origin of the Hun­ garians and their first civilization, — according to recent historical research. In the new light, the Hungari­ ans seem to have come from the Ancient Near East — Mesopota­ mia, Egypt and Syria — where the first Higher Civilization flourished. Their westward mov­ ing tribes reached the Middle Danube basin already in the Neo­ lithic times and had laid the foun­ dation of the future Hungary. In the subsequent periods Scythians, Huns and half-Turkised Arpad- Hungarians added their own eth­ nic and cultural contribution to the existing heritage, whereby the People acquired its final charac­ teristics by the end of the IXth century A.D. L.S.) and prior to his nomination to the teaching post, he was Secretary of the Hun­ garian Institute in Paris (1932-1939) and fulfilled the role of Assistant-Secretary of the International Committee of Historical Sciences at the same time. He is now retired in Montreal, Canada. Prof. BARATH is author of over a hundred historical essays and also of several books, the most significant ones being: The Tax-System in Hungary, 1605-1648; History of the Hungarian Historiography, 1867- 1935 (in French); A Short History of Hungary; and the three-volume A Aici’enf History of the Hungarian Peoples with the present sequel The Early Hungar­ ians (in English).

Jovanovich Heraldic tradition of the Serbian Medieval State, although more modest than in more heraldically developed parts of Europe, still has rather interesting development, packed with various influences, but also with certain characteristics typical for it alone, due to geopolitical position of Serbia between the East and the West. Such symbolic and heraldic influences have shaped an unique heraldic tradition which was largely stopped in it’s growth and flourishing with the Ottoman conquest. If, for the purposes of this paper, we can estimate that the proper and developed heraldry begins roughly in the second quarter of the XII century, then we can draw a conclusion that in that sense, Serbia wasn’t left so much behind comparing to the rest of the Europe. At least not as near as much as one might expect, or as it is commonly regarded. P a g e | 2 Namely, many researchers of the Serbian heraldic antiquity have considered that we can speak about the Serbian heraldry only from the time of the reign of Emperor Stefan Urosh IV Dushan The Mighty (1331-1355), but it is our opinion that such claims should be disputed, and even qualified as unfounded. It is undisputed that Serbian Medieval heraldry has been developing in two main directions and under rather different influences. Those influences came directly or indirecly from the Byzantine Empire (only when it comes to the repertoire of heraldic charges), but also from the West, especially from German, Hungarian and Italian lands, and also under the influence of the Crusades, which also hade their path over the Serbian territory and had to leave significant impact upon the development of Serbian heraldry.
