STUDIA HISTORICA BRUNENSIA 62, 2015, 2 KRISZTINA ARANY – ANTON AVAR PATENTS OF ARMS ONLINE THE DATABASE OF PATENTS OF ARMS OF THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF HUNGARY1 Abstract: Besides their decorative appearance, the patents of arms bear significant historical value, which provide important contribution to various ar- eas of historical science. The aim of the National Archives of Hungary’s project of several years was to create a versatile, illustrated, well-search- able and expandable online database, in which we could process the data of all the original patents of arms and related documents held in our insti- tution. Our collections of patents of arms are being built since the founda- tion of our institution, and contain over 2000 original parchment charters granting mainly Hungarian and Transylvanian nobility along with heraldic achievements. At present, the National Archives of Hungary has completed the digitization and processing of all this material, except for the 131 medi- eval (pre-1526) charters, which is to be covered in the near future. Keywords: patents of arms, coats of arms, online database, mass digitization, Na- tional Archives of Hungary, open access. I. • The Order of the Dragon As Reflected in Hungarian and Croatian Heraldry
1 THE ORDER OF THE DRAGON AS REFLECTED IN HUNGARIAN AND CROATIAN HERALDRY Ivan Mirnik The Order of the Dragon On March 18, 2006 an exhibition (TAKÁCS ed. 2006) opened at the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts, dedicated to Emperor and King Sigismund of the house of Luxemburg (b. Feb. 15, 1368 – King of Hungary, Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia 1378-1437 – Margrave of Brandenburg 1378 – crowned King of Hungary March 31, 1387 - Roman King July 21, 1411 – crowned King of Bohemia July 28, 1420 – crowned Roman Emperor in Rome May 31, 1433 - d. Znaim, Dec. 9, 1437). In July of the same year it was opened in Luxemburg, at the Musée national d'histoire et art, in a reduced version. Before this exhibition, a symposium was held in Luxemburg in 2005, as an introduction to the forthcoming exhibition (PAULY – REINERT eds. 2005). The authors of both papers presented at the symposium and of the exhibition catalogue have succeeded not only in bringing this ruler and his era closer to us, but also from a historical distance to present his character and deeds in an objective manner. The exhibition itself was excellent and well conceived. At the Emperor Sigismund Exhibition one could, in one room (Section IV – Die Welt der Drachenritter), admire all the paraphernalia of the Order of the Dragon. It was a unique opportunity to see these items, gathered from all over Europe, assembled in one place for the first and probably the last time in history. The catalogue, for instance, listed the famous sword of King Charles Robert's Order of St.

Hungarian Historical Review 8, no. 3 (2019): 497–507 Catullus on a Coat-of-Arms: A Pictorial Paraphrase of Catull. 11 from Late Medieval Hungary* Attila Tuhári Doctoral School of Linguistics, Pázmány Péter Catholic University [email protected] The paper discusses the coat-of-arms of Mathias of Szente (or of Sáró) granted by Ladislaus V in 1456, the depiction of which includes–in my opinion–a pictorial paraphrase of a Catullian metaphor. This could offer a more satisfactory, but unusual answer to the emerging problems regarding the interpretation of the composition. The study attempts to reveal how Catullus’ poem could reach Mathias of Szente, as well as the possible connotations it might have awaken on a broader range of the society. Keywords: coat-of-arms, Mathias of Szente, Catullus On January 31, 1456 in the town of Győr, Ladislaus the Posthumous (Ladislaus V as King of Hungary and Croatia) granted arms of nobility to the literatus Mathias of Szente, also appearing as of Sáró, and other members of his line.1 The letters patent contains only a heraldic miniature, and no written description is presented for it. The heraldic achievement could be blazoned as follows: Azure, a Base Sable, over it a Plough Argent facing sinister with Handles Or, at its point a Tree raguly standing palewise with three Roses Gules slipped Vert issuant from its top.2 The same tree with the roses appears as a crest on the tilting helmet mantled Gules doubled Argent.3 * I owe many thanks to Anton Avar (National Archives of Hungary) for giving advice in heraldic matters, especially on heraldic descriptions, to Dániel Kiss (Eötvös Loránd University) for resolving my sometimes misleading uncertainties in the stemmatics of the manuscripts, and to László Takács (Pázmány Péter Catholic University) for sharing his views and insights on this question.

  • Rainforest 360 Virtual Tour Script for Upload with Edits
360 Virtual Rainforest Tour Outline Introduction Welcome to the Costa Rican Rainforest! In this tour, not only will you learn about the animals and plants in the rainforest, but also about important biological concepts that apply to all life on Earth. In addition, you’ll learn about the current research and conservation happening in the rainforest by Milwaukee Public Museum scientists. Alcove 1: The Cell The Basic Unit of Life Life as we know it is packaged as cells. Some living things are just one cell, other living things are made of many specialized cells. Whether from orchid, fungus, bacterium, or beetle, all cells can be categorized as either prokaryotic (PRO-kair-ee-ah-tic) or eukaryotic (U-kair-ee-ah-tic). Compare the differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells below. Eukaryotic Cell 1. Larger 2. Complex, with organelles. 3. Genetic material for nucleus Prokaryotic Cell 1. Smaller 2. Lacks organelles 3. Genetic material loose Being a prokaryote or eukaryote is one of the characteristics of living things. Many Forms of Life From the common denominator of a single living cell, life forms as different as the parrot and the palm tree have evolved. Millions of species currently exist and most are still unknown to us. All of these diverse life forms are made up of either eukaryotic or prokaryotic cells. Cells Specialize In plants and animals that have more than one cell, cells specialize to perform certain tasks. Each cell, however, still requires nutrition, gases for respiration, and mechanisms for waste removal and all other life processes that go on at the cellular level.
