ZooKeys 365: 279–305. doi: 10.3897/ zookeys.365.5819 Abstract A feasibility test of molecular identification of European fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) based on COI barcode sequences has been executed. A dataset containing 555 sequences of 135 ingroup species from three subfamilies and 42 genera and one single outgroup species has been analysed. 73.3% of all included species could be identified based on their COI barcode gene, based on similarity and distances. The low success rate is caused by singletons as well as some problematic groups: several species groups within the genus Terellia and especially the genus Urophora. With slightly more than 100 sequences - almost 20% of the total - this genus alone constitutes the larger part of the failure for molecular identification for this dataset. -

CPERC Recorders field days, Waterbeach Barracks & Airfield August 6th 2011 June 9th 2012 Louise Bacon, Data Officer, CPERC The objective of the CPERC recorders field day was several-fold; to provide an opportunity to the Cambridgeshire recording community to record in their favoured species groups on a site to which they would rarely gain access; to spend a day with others of the recording community; and to provide the site owner with an insight into the species found on their site. Following the success of the first day, it was agreed that we would return earlier in the season in 2012 for a follow-up visit. In total, 22 people (including three CPERC staff) attended the 2011 day and 11 the second visit. The Waterbeach site is an active MOD site, so we had pre-arranged our visits and security gate clearance was a smooth process, giving time for some of our recorders to find a few species around the lights of the Guardroom building. On the 2012 recording day, although for once it was not raining, it was very windy, and about 5 hours was spent by most people on the airfield; the botanists then obtained permission to spend a further two hours amongst the active buildings and residential part of the site, which was not covered by others. Waterbeach Barracks and disused airfield is an active training site, but which has a large area of open space, most of which is not used particularly heavily by the MOD. There is a Golf course and a pair of lakes, one of which is used by a local fishing club. -

Review of evidence concerning ragwort impacts, ecology and control options Report to Defra OCTOBER 2013 Authors: Ruth Laybourn, Debbie Kessell, Naomi Jones, Simon Conyers, Caroline Hallam, Nigel Boatman Food and Environment Research Agency Sand Hutton, York, YO41 1LZ 1 2 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Introduction Ragwort is a widespread native plant in the UK, which occurs in a range of habitats including those used for grazing livestock and hay or silage production, and is of concern because it contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) which are toxic to livestock. Problems have occurred particularly with poisoning of horses. Ragwort is a specified weed in the Weeds Act 1959, under which land owners can be required to take all reasonable steps to prevent spread on their land and onto adjoining land. Defra have issued a Code of Practice on How to Prevent the Spread of Ragwort, which was published in 2004 (revised 2007) (Defra, 2007). In order to ensure that guidance continues to be based on the latest and best evidence, the work reported here was commissioned by Defra with the following objectives: o Review and update the evidence base on the impacts of ragwort on livestock, methods of control and the cost, benefits and impacts of control; o Investigate experience of ragwort problems, policy and control in other countries o Make suggestions relating to the Code of Practice and further research needs. Biology and ecology Studies of Ragwort ecology and distribution have shown that: Ragwort is found in a wide range of habitats but requires bare ground or disturbance to establish. Ragwort plants form a rosette in their first year and typically flower, set seed and die in the second year, though in some situations they can be longer lived. -

They are almost all phytophagous. Some species are serious pests in agriculture and other species useful for the control of weeds. Larvae develop in fruits and flowers of Asteraceae plants, in galls on stems and roots and mine leaves (White & Elson- Harris, 1992). In a study on the tephritid fly fauna in Azerbaijan, Ardabil and Kurdistan Provinces, two species and two genera were identified as new records for Iran. Adult insects were reared from flower heads of Asteraceae plants and/or swept by a standard insect net during 2008-2009. The specimens are deposited at the Zoological Museum of the Agriculture Faculty, University of Tehran, Karaj. The identification of the species was made possible by Dr. Valery A. Of them, Actinoptera discoidea (Fallen, 1814) is being newly reported for the Iranian fauna. Identification key to the species was prepared. The locality and host plants of each species are given. KEY WORDS: Tephritidae, Kandovan valley, Iran, new record. Tephritidae is a large family of the order Diptera with more than 4400 described species over the world. Considering their damage on fruit plantations, they are important insects from the agricultural point of view as well as forest entomology (Merz, 2001). In addition some of species are important agents in biological control programs against weeds (White & Elson-Harris, 1992). Before this study, the fruit flies fauna of Kandovan valley has not been investigated thus it subjected for the present study. Kandovan valley is one of the longest Sahand chain mauntains’ valleys with about 12 km length, located in south eastern part of East Azerbayjan province (Iran). This biosphere reserve situated in the south of Sultan mountain, one of the Sahand’s summits, with about 35.5 km distance of Tabriz city with UTM coordinate system, X from 609181.42 to 617583.55 E; Y from 4177170.42 to 4183938.80 N and varying latitude from 1860 m to 3110 m a.s.l. -

Larvae of this family are often associated with thistle of various plants specially family Asteraceae. The larvae of some species feeding of inedible asteraceus plants to grazing animals, reduce seed amount and cause stable control of them in grasslands. In this study, 13 species belonging to 9 genera of the family Tephritidae from 10 species belonging to 6 genera of the host plants were collected and identified during 2011-2013. Four species, Onopordum acanthium (LINNÉ, 1753), Onopordum illyricum, Acroptilon repens (LINNÉ, 1837) and Echinops spinosissimus TURRA, 1765, are recorded as the host plants of these flies for the first time from Iran. Acanthiophilus helianthi ROSSI, 1794 from Onopordum acanthium and Acroptilon repens, Tephritis postica LOEW, 1844 and Terellia gynae- cochroma HERING, 1937 from Onopordum illyricum as well as Tephritomyia lauta LOEW, 1869 from Echinops spinosissimus were obtained by rearing in the laboratory. Ragwort Insect Fauna
Insect Fauna in Detail The following list represents the best available current knowledge, but is likely to be incomplete. Many species of insect may be found on Ragwort ( Senecio spp.) but some may have only a casual relationship. Of those insects that eat Ragwort, it is necessary to separate those species that will eat many types of plant from those that are specific to Ragwort or which have relatively few other food plants. The Ragwort fauna described in the literature thus needs to be treated with caution. The listing here only includes the most significant Ragwort feeders. TR23 J (Creteway Down, Holy Well and the Hope Farm Area)
Folkestone and Hythe Birds Tetrad Guide: TR23 J (Creteway Down, Holy Well and the Hope Farm area) Most of the interest in this tetrad is provided by the section of the Folkestone Downs escarpment that runs along the southern edge. Creteway Down attracts good numbers of common migrants in season and scarcer species have included Long-eared Owl, Firecrest, Garden and Grasshopper Warblers, Spotted and Pied Flycatchers, Nightingale and Redstart, whilst it is a regular haunt for Ring Ouzel in autumn. The Downs provide a good vantage point for recording visual migration and more notable species have included Honey Buzzard, Red Kite, Marsh Harrier, Merlin, Golden Plover, Ruff, Short-eared Owl and Hawfinch. The spring at Holy Well holds breeding Moorhen and wintering Water Rail, and occasionally Woodcock, whilst Firecrest, Nightingale and Black Redstart have also occurred. Looking west over Creteway Down The fields to the north of Crete Road East can produce Wheatear and Whinchat, particularly if left as stubble in autumn, and a Tawny Pipit was seen in September 1993. Large numbers of Mediterranean Gulls can often be found in late summer/early autumn. The Hope Farm area was one of the last remaining haunts of Turtle Dove and Corn Buntings also formerly bred here. Looking north across the fields to Hope Farm Spotted Flycatcher at Creteway Down Pied Flycatcher at Creteway Down Waxwings have twice been noted in the tetrad – a flock of 12 by Encliffe Farm in January 2011 and a flock of about.20 by Coombe Farm in January 2013. Redstart at Creteway Down Ring Ouzel at Creteway Down Access and Parking There are several lay-bys along Crete Road East which enable access to Creteway Down and also along Crete Road West which enable access to Holy Well. -

Keywords Finland, Diptera, checklist, Tephritoidea, Sciomyzoidea Introduction With over 7800 known extant species (Pape et al. 2011), Tephritoidea is one of the larger Diptera superfamilies. The nominotypical family of Tephritoidea, the fruit flies (Tephritidae), includes over half of the currently known species in the superfamily. The highest diversity of tephritoids occurs in the tropics. Six of the nine extant tephritoid families have been found in Finland: no richardiid, ctenostylid or pyrgotid have been found in the country.
