Chapter 6 Acoustic Communication in the Nocturnal Lepidoptera Michael D. Greenfield Abstract Pair formation in moths typically involves pheromones, but some pyra- loid and noctuoid species use sound in mating communication. The signals are generally ultrasound, broadcast by males, and function in courtship. Long-range advertisement songs also occur which exhibit high convergence with commu- nication in other acoustic species such as orthopterans and anurans. Tympanal hearing with sensitivity to ultrasound in the context of bat avoidance behavior is widespread in the Lepidoptera, and phylogenetic inference indicates that such perception preceded the evolution of song. This sequence suggests that male song originated via the sensory bias mechanism, but the trajectory by which ances- tral defensive behavior in females—negative responses to bat echolocation sig- nals—may have evolved toward positive responses to male song remains unclear. Analyses of various species offer some insight to this improbable transition, and to the general process by which signals may evolve via the sensory bias mechanism. 6.1 Introduction The acoustic world of Lepidoptera remained for humans largely unknown, and this for good reason: It takes place mostly in the middle- to high-ultrasound fre- quency range, well beyond our sensitivity range. Thus, the discovery and detailed study of acoustically communicating moths came about only with the use of electronic instruments sensitive to these sound frequencies. Such equipment was invented following the 1930s, and instruments that could be readily applied in the field were only available since the 1980s. But the application of such equipment M. D. The number A of abdominal segments varies, however; there are only six in the Collembola (springtails), 9–12 in the Protura, and 10 in the Diplura, whereas in all other hexapods there are strictly 11. Insects are now regarded as comprising only those hexapods with 11 abdominal segments. Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000). -

II. 1984 Die Lepidopterenfauna, insbesondere die Noctuidenfauna Griechenlands ist im Vergleich zu anderen europäischen Ländern nur sehr mangelhaft erforscht. Dem zufolge ist auch die Zahl der bisher bekannten Arten mit 390 nur sehr gering. GANEV (1982) gibt für Bulgarien 581 Noctu ¡den-Arten an. In Anbetracht der geographischen Lage und der Tatsache, daß nur wenige Arten, die in Bulgarien oder Jugoslawisch-Mazedonien Vorkommen, in Griechenland fehlen dürften, sind 630 bis 650 potentiell vorhandener Arten sicherlich nicht zu hoch gegriffen. Abstract: The fauna of the subfamily Diplazontinae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) in the north central parts of Iran was studied during 2010-2011. A total of 933 specimens were collected in 30 localities at different altitudes using Malaise traps. Sixteen species belonging to 7 genera were identified of which twelve species indicated by asterisk, are new records for Iran: Diplazon annulatus (Gravenhorst)*, Diplazon laetatorius (Fabricius), D. pectoratorius (Gravenhorst)*, D. tibiatorius (Thunberg)*, Enizemum ornatum (Gravenhorst), Homotropus nigritarsus (Gravenhorst)*, Homotropus pictus (Gravenhorst)*, Promethes sulcator (Gravenhorst), Sussaba flavipes (Lucas)*, Sussaba pulchella (Holmgren)*, Syrphoctonus tarsatorius (Panzer)*, Syrphophilus bizonarius (Gravenhorst)*, Tymmophorus obscuripes (Holmgren)*, Woldstedtius biguttatus (Gravenhorst), Woldstedtius citropectoralis (Schmiedeknecht)* and Xestopelta gracilima (Schmiedeknekht)*. RESUMEN: Se exponen los resultados de artrópodos (phylum Arthropoda) colectados y observados en la isla de Corvo, archipiélago de las Azores, durante los días 26.VII.1999 y 11-13.IX.2002. Con la inclusión de la literatura disponible, se citan 175 especies y subespecies (11.43% son endemismos comunes a las otras islas de las Azores), repartidas per 16 órdenes y 83 familias, de las que 32 son nuevas citas para la isla de Corvo. Phaneroptera nana Fieber (Orthoptera: Tettigonidae) se cita por primera vez para las Azores. Palabras clave: Arthropoda, isla de Corvo, Azores. ABSTRACT: The arthropod fauna (phylum Arthropoda) from the island of Corvo, Azores archipelago, was surveyed during four sampling days (26 July 1999; 11-13 September 2002).
