Pianist in residence at the OSM Louis Lortie will take to the stage on three occasions, first in recital and then with the Orchestra under the direction of British conductor Sir Andrew Davis. At the end of the month, Bernard Labadie, music director and founder of Les Violons du Roy, will be the OSM’s guest for a touching reunion with Louis Lortie, while Patrice Bélanger, the OSM’s young-audience concert ambassador, invites youngsters to discover the Orchestra. ********** MASTERCLASS In partnership with Montréal’s institutions of higher learning, the OSM annually offers a series of masterclasses featuring its guest artists. These courses in performance are given before an audience and make it not only possible for students to learn from an expert, but also for spectators to discover the artists and to learn more about the works being performed. Taking advantage of their visits to the OSM, these remarkable musicians reach out to music students to pass along knowledge and advice. Xavier de Maistre, harp Saturday, April 1, 2017 – 10 a.m. McGill University Schulich School of Music Free admission ********** NIGHTS IN THE GARDENS OF SPAIN Sunday, April 2, 2017 – 2:30 p.m. Maison symphonique de Montréal Mystery, sensuality and languor are all in the spotlight… Composed first as a nocturne for solo piano by Manuel de Falla, Nights in the Gardens of Spain grew into a work for piano and orchestra. Pianist Angela Hewitt performs a piece in which magic, ritual, Oriental exuberance and Andalusian folklore are all on the bill. Like light shooting through the sky in the dead of night, the Concerto capriccio by Catalan composer Xavier Montsalvatge is performed by French harpist Xavier de Maistre. From Mozart, the overture to the opera Don Giovanni, one of the composer’s major works and whose action unfolds in Seville, and the symphony known as “Haffner” complete this Spanish- accented program. Among the 30 or so recordings in his impressive discography, the one devoted to the complete Chopin Études is considered a reference point around the world . Let yourself be dazzled by a recital that Lortie, one of our greatest artistic ambassadors, devotes to them. This recital is presented by National Bank in association with Pro Musica. The public is invited to attend a private concert followed by a cocktail buffet in the company of seven exceptional performers, all principal musicians with the OSM. At this performance, unique in more ways than one, Beethoven’s Septet for Strings and Winds will be presented as an exclusive, since the musicians will be recording the chamber music work on the Analekta label for release next season. In this performance at Salle Claude-Champagne, the OSM is traveling to the very premises where future composers are being trained, at the heart of the University campus. Composer and professor Denis Gougeon will put each of the performed works in context during interviews with the young composers. He will also chat with assistant conductor Adam Johnson. To introduce spectators to the instrument families in a fun way he’ll even be trying his hand as a conductor, a challenge a little more demanding than it might seem. Works by Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn and other great composers will be performed by the Orchestra under Adam Johnson.
