NIGHTS IN THE GARDENS OF

Sunday, April 2, 2017 – 2:30 p.m. Maison symphonique de Montréal

Mystery, sensuality and languor are all in the spotlight… Composed first as a nocturne for solo piano by Manuel de Falla, Nights in the Gardens of Spain grew into a work for piano and orchestra. Pianist Angela Hewitt performs a piece in which magic, ritual, Oriental exuberance and Andalusian folklore are all on the bill. Like light shooting through the sky in the dead of night, the Concerto capriccio by Catalan Xavier Montsalvatge is performed by French harpist Xavier de Maistre. From Mozart, the overture to the Don Giovanni, one of the composer’s major works and whose action unfolds in Seville, and the symphony known as “Haffner” complete this Spanish- accented program. A true dreamscape.

April at the OSM 1 Artists Christoph Gedschold, conductor Xavier de Maistre, harp Angela Hewitt, piano

Works on the program Mozart, Don Giovanni, K. 527, Overture (evening performance only) Montsalvatge, Concerto capriccio for Harp and Orchestra Falla, Nights in the Gardens of Spain Mozart, Symphony No. 35 in D major, K. 385, “Haffner”
