Page 5 • hp://brighamcity.utah.gov/seniorRcenter.htm You should “Never Quit Learning”……..(Things you may want to know!) Do I Really Need a Flu Shot?

GET YOUR GET FLU SHOT NOW!! Influenza is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalizaon and somemes even death. Every flu season is different, and influenza infecon can affect people differently. Even healthy people can get very sick from the flu and spread it to others. Over a period of 31 seasons between 1976 and 2007,esmates of fluRassociated deathsin the United States range from a low of about 3,000 to a high of about 49,000 people. During recent flu seasons, between 80% and 90% of flu related deaths have occurred in people 65 years and older. "Flu season" in the United States can begin as early as October and last as late as May. During this me, flu viruses are circulang at higher levels in the U.S. populaon. An annual seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to reduce the chances that you will get seasonal flu and spread it to others. When more people get vaccinated against the flu, less flu can spread through that community. How do flu vaccines work? Flu vaccines cause anbodies to develop in the body about two weeks a er vaccinaon. These anbodies provide protecon against infecon with the viruses that are in the vaccine. The seasonal flu vaccine protects against the influenza viruses that research indicates will be most common during the upcoming season. Tradional flu vaccines are made to protect against three flu viruses. For the 2016R2017 flu season, theAdvisory Commiee on Immunizaon Pracces (ACIP)recommends annual influenza vaccinaon for everyone 6 months and older. There are many vaccine oponsto choose from, but the most important thing is for all people 6 months and older to get a flu vaccine every year. If you have quesons about which vaccine is best for

you, talk to your doctor or other health care professional. Flu shots are free with most Health Insurance plans.

Page 12 • hp://brighamcity.utah.gov/seniorRcenter.htm Marge’s Meanderings

An Atude of Gratude Many of you, especially those of us who hadtoddlers years ago, will remember "The Count" of Sesame Street fame. He was dressed in a vampire looking costume and heLOVED to count. I never knew what the Halloween are had to do with the counng, but he counted everything he could. He was alwaysThrilled to count. He would have the children count along with him! What a clever way to get the youngsters to learn to count!! I never knew when I was dang Jack that I was Marrying The Count! Jack is a counter! When we go where there are a number of people gathered, I see him looking all around and I know he is counng the people. When we go to the grocery store, he is always looking at the labels to see how many items are in a package. I use to try to keep track of the number of people who wouldcome to the family reunions. I never worry about it now because I just ask Jack and he has the numbers nailed before the last car drives away. It is amazing to me that he counts so many thingsand it is amazing to him that I don't. When I come home from one of my Club meengs, he will say, "How many were there." My answer is always, "I don't know. I didn't count them." He just looks at me in amazement! It is good that part of his career as a microbiologist was before the computers could count the number of malformaons in a petri dish. Jack use to love tolook atthe samples in the petri dishes and count the "bad bacteria". Later on with computers thatdid almosteverything in his laboratory, Jack just slid thepetri dishes inaplacebelow the computers and light technology gave the total of "bad boys" hanging out in the dish. (Sorry men. Maybe there were women bacteria too that weren't up to par.) Why all the talk about "Counng". It is now November and me to start counng our blessings. If you haven't read last month's Marge's Meanderings and think you don't have any blessings, think of the man who said, "I cried because I had no shoes, unl I met a man who had no feet." Counng our blessings is simple. I think I have shared this before. Just number a paper from One to One Hundred and start lisng all the things you are thankful for. WHAT iS THATyou say! ONE HUNDRED THINGS! THAT WOULD TAKE ME ALL DAY AND I COULD NEVER THINK OF THAT MANY THINGS! I know that most of you have more in your family than we do and right off I can list overthirty people in my immediatefamily that I am thankful for. Add to that Parents,Brothers and Sisters and Aunts, Uncles, Nieces and Nephews,Cousinsand the list is at least to one hundred. Try being more creave with the list and be like the neighbor who hailed her neighbor on Thanksgiving morning with this greeng, "I'm so glad you live next door to me."Our neighbors are the best but most of us forget to statethe obvious. There are neighbors that share their produce with usbecause we have "black thumbs". We have neighbors who take in our mail, when we are going to be gone overnight or justfor a few days. Our neighbors will water our flowers for us and make sure any one suspiciouscoming toour house is greeted warmly and asked, if they can be helped. One of my nephews tried to get in our house to put insomething his father sent me. The neighbor was right at the door wondering what he could help themwith. The neighbor took the gi from my nephew and bid him on his way. Later my nephew said, "Boy your neighbor thought I was trying to break in." Even though we keep our house locked up ght (understatement) you never know these days. Neighbors in our area share "goodies" with us. They visit us and brighten up our day. They sharetheir children with our family. When our grandchildren come to visit, they want to go to the neighbors and play. We have lived in the same house for 46 years and I think I will list all our neighbors in our "Blessing" column. It also might be well to list all the Veterans our familyknows. "Some gave some and some gave all." Thinking of Veterans reminds me of the Brigham City Historic Depot and the Veteran's displays there. There will also be Christmas Tree Lane next month for people to enjoy. If it weren't for Volunteers, the Depot could not be open. Many places in Brigham City are manned by volunteers. Think of the hundreds of volunteers that serve at the Senior Center. When we have the volunteer banquet the center is full of Volunteers, but the ones who serve us have put in a lot of work themselves.! Now your list should be at two hundred or more! It would be hard to count all the people who volunteer and help in our community. Our public servants also deserve a place on the list. I think I will get my husband, Jack, the Count, to start counng all of these people. While he is doing that I will share a few thoughts on "Atudes of Gratude." "Our lives are like a sculptured work of stone. Shaped thus and so by each associate." (Lewis Phelps) I paraphrase a saying on gratude: There aretwo kinds of gratude: the sudden kind we feel for what we are given, andthe larger kind we feel for what we give. Thank you for sharing both with our family. If you seeJack, the Count,he is just counng you as one of our blessings and we giveThanks ForYou on Thanksgiving Dayand atall other mes of the year.
