Attic Pottery of the Later Fifth Century from the Athenian Agora
ATTIC POTTERY OF THE LATER FIFTH CENTURY FROM THE ATHENIAN AGORA (PLATES 73-103) THE 1937 campaign of the American excavations in the Athenian Agora included work on the Kolonos Agoraios. One of the most interesting results was the discovery and clearing of a well 1 whose contents proved to be of considerable value for the study of Attic pottery. For this reason it has seemed desirable to present the material as a whole.2 The well is situated on the southern slopes of the Kolonos. The diameter of the shaft at the mouth is 1.14 metres; it was cleared to the bottom, 17.80 metres below the surface. The modern water-level is 11 metres down. I quote the description from the excavator's notebook: The well-shaft, unusually wide and rather well cut widens towards the bottom to a diameter of ca. 1.50 m. ANCIENT LAMPS THE J. PAUL GETTY MUSEUM Ancient Lamps in the J. Paul Getty Museum presents over six hundred lamps made in production centers that were active across the ancient Mediterranean world between 800 B.C. and A.D. 800. Notable for their marvelous variety—from simple clay saucers GETTYIN THE PAUL J. MUSEUM that held just oil and a wick to elaborate figural lighting fixtures in bronze and precious metals— the Getty lamps display a number of unprecedented shapes and decors. Most were made in Roman workshops, which met the ubiquitous need for portable illumination in residences, public spaces, religious sanctuaries, and graves. The omnipresent oil lamp is a font of popular imagery, illustrating myths, nature, and the activities and entertainments of daily life in antiquity. Jashemski, Professor This study summarizes the existing information on the Roman domestic cult and illustrates it by a study of the arch eological evidence. The household shrines (lararia) of Pompeii are discussed in detail. Lararia from other parts of the Roman world are also studied. The domestic worship of the Lares, Vesta, and the Penates, is discussed and their evolution is described. The Lares, protective spirits of the household, were originally rural deities. However, the word Lares was used in many dif ferent connotations apart from domestic religion. Vesta was closely associated with the family hearth and was an ancient agrarian deity. The Penates, whose origins are largely un known, were probably the guardian spirits of the household storeroom. All of the above elements of Roman domestic worship are present in the lararia of Pompeii. The Genius was the living force of a man and was an important element in domestic religion. -

Mortuary and iconographic contexts reveal that headgear made of both metal and organic materials marked elite status, but materials varied regionally by gender and age throughout the Iron Age. -

A BUCKET, BY ANY OTHER NAME, AND AN ATHENIAN STRANGER IN EARLY IRON AGE CRETE (PLATES15-16) O NE OF THE MORE INTERESTING, if not amusing, examples of the common accidentsthat can befalla potteris offeredby a vesselfound in the areaof the laterAthenian Agora.It was originallydesigned as a hydriabut was laterremodeled, prior to firing,into a krater. Publishedas a full-fledgedand "handsome"krater in an earlypreliminary report,1 soon afterits discovery,the vase, Agora P 6163 (Fig. 1; P1. 15:a),was to have receivedfuller treatment in the EarlyIron Age volumein the AthenianAgora series. Such a distinguishedvenue would normally havesufficed the publicationof the pot, but apartfrom its own intrinsicinterest, it contributesto a smallCretan problem that has neverbeen adequatelyaddressed. Moreover, the originaltype of vesselfrom which P 6163 is likelyto havebeen cut can be illustratedby a pot in the laterAthenian Kerameikos.2For these reasons,Agora P 6163 is publishedhere in the companyof its friend, Fortetsa454 (P1.16:d),3 and in closeproximity to its alterego, or id, Kerameikos783 (P1.15:b).4 Beforedescribing Agora P 6163, it wouldbe usefulto summarizeits contextand establishits date, especiallysince datinga vesselsuch as this one on the basis of style alone would, at best, representan arbitraryguess. Agora P 6163 was found in a well (depositL 6:2). Clearanceof late walls immediatelyto the south of the Athens-Piraeusrailway in 1935 led to the discovery of this well, which is locatedonly about 50 m south of the EridanosRiver and about 12 m east of the southeastcorner of the Peribolosof the TwelveGods. The mouth of the well, measuring 1.60 m east-westby 1.15 m north-south,was encounteredat a depth of 6 m below the modern groundlevel, and its shaftextended another 5.50 m in depth. -

DOI: https://doi.org/ 10.16995/traj.423 RESEARCH ARTICLE Identity Through the Looking Glass: How the Perception of Identity in Roman Funerary Archaeology Developed in Slovenia Kaja Stemberger Independent researcher, SI [email protected] This paper addresses how the changes in Slovenian politics have been influencing the inter- pretation of identity in the sphere of Roman mortuary archaeology. The paper starts with an overview of the political history of Slovenia, separated into three phases: the period until 1945, the Yugoslav period (1945–1990), and independent Slovenia (1991–present). The second part of the paper focusses on theoretical studies directly discussing identity of the deceased in Roman period Slovenia. The majority of such studies is centred on the material from larger cemeteries, notably those of Colonia Ulpia Traiana Poetovio (modern Ptuj) and Colonia Iulia Emona (modern Ljubljana), of which the latter is better documented and researched. The paper concludes with a discussion of the potential for future studies. Keywords: Roman archaeology; History of archaeology; Identity Introduction This article aims to examine how the context—political, cultural, ethnic, historical, personal—of the researcher as an individual human being influences their work. The idea sprouted from a study on the role of communication and linguistic theory in archaeology (Stemberger Flegar 2020), which discussed the ways in which language and communication can influence understanding of the theory. It soon became clear that language is only one of the factors which affect our understanding of the world.
