CYCLING; Questions on Doping Shadow Armstrong ‐ New York Times Page 1 of 2 Sports CYCLING; Questions on Doping Shadow Armstrong By SAMUEL ABT Published: July 16, 1999 Lance Armstrong has heard the rumors and doubts. ''Innuendo,'' the 27-year-old American calls speculation that he is leading the Tour de France because he is using illegal drugs. How else, some of the European news media are asking, can somebody who underwent chemotherapy for testicular cancer two and a half years ago be so dominant now in the world's toughest bicycle race? The suspicion toward him is all the more intense because of a sportwide drug scandal that came to light in last year's Tour de France, and almost scuttled the race. Asked flatly whether he is or has been doping, Armstrong said, ''Emphatically and absolutely not.'' ''I'm not stupid,'' he said Wednesday night as he had dinner at his team's hotel in the mountain resort of Alpe d'Huez. ''I've been on my deathbed.'' Three years ago, he was found to be suffering from testicular cancer. It was later determined during the surgery that the cancer had spread to his lungs, abdomen and brain. While most of the intense news media coverage about his results have been adulatory -- especially in the United States -- the Belgian newspaper Het Niewsblad ran the headline ''Armstrong Puts a Bomb Under the Tour,'' with the word bomb understood to refer to drug use. The French sports newspaper L'Equipe has also used suggestive headlines and a commentary this week comparing Armstrong not to Miguel Indurain, who won five straight Tour titles in the 90's, or to Greg LeMond, the only previous American to win the Tour, but to Bjarne Riis, a Dane who won in 1996.

PUTTING SHOULDER PADS ON SCHLECK: HOW THE BUSINESS OF PROFESSIONAL CYCLING COULD BE IMPROVED THROUGH A MORE AMERICAN STRUCTURE Chris Deubert* INTRODUCTION t was announced in August 2010 that three-time Tour de France I winner Alberto Contador, less than a week after his latest victory, was leaving his Kazakhstan-based team, Astana, at the end of the sea- son.1 Contador reportedly rejected a two-year, nearly $13 million deal from Astana,2 instead choosing to sign with Bjarne Riis’ Danish-based Saxo Bank-SunGard team for a reported two years and $20 million.3 The move was particularly notable because Contador was essentially replac- ing rider Andy Schleck, who announced that at the end of the 2010 sea- son he would be leaving Riis’ squad to form a team based in his native Luxembourg.4 Schleck finished second to Contador in both the 2009 and 2010 Tours de France, including a controversial thirty-nine second victo- 5 ry in 2010.

  • Doping Na Tour De France

  • Report on Doping in Danish Cycling 1998-2015
REPORT ON DOPING IN DANISH CYCLING 1998-2015 EXECUTIVE ENGLISH SUMMARY 1.1 THE INVESTIGATION GROUP The investigation group responsible for this report was administratively appointed by Anti Doping Denmark (ADD) and the NOC and Sports Confederation of Denmark (DIF) and has consisted of the following persons: • Christina Friis Johansen, Senior Consultant, Anti Doping Denmark • Morten Mølholm Hansen, CEO, NOC and Sports Confederation of Denmark • Lone Hansen, CEO, Team Danmark (Until 15th February 2015, Anti Doping Denmark) • Jesper Frigast Larsen, Legal Manager, Anti Doping Denmark (Until 1st April 2015, NOC and Sports Confederation of Denmark) 1.2 PURPOSE OF THE INVESTIGATION In its October 2012 report, USADA published the results of the most comprehensive investigation to date about doping in cycling, the US Postal case. In this report, it is described how USADA's report led to the case against the Danish rider Michael Rasmussen who was equal to "rider 14" in the Reasoned Decision published by USADA. ADD and DIF in cooperation with USADA and the Dopingautoriteit in the Netherlands entered into a cooperation-agreement with Michael Rasmussen, according to which Rasmussen accepted to provide substantial assistance to the anti-doping authorities. Rasmussen obliged himself to provide his truthful admission of own anti- doping rule violations as well as information of other anti-doping rule violations committed by other persons. Following interviews with Michael Rasmussen in January 2013, ADD (as investigating authority according to the Danish Anti-doping Regulations) and DIF (as prosecuting authority) administratively formed an investigation group with the aim of corroborating Rasmussen's by collecting additional information from a number of other persons.
