Cristian Abstract: In this study Cristian surveys the life and work of Baroness Elemérné Bornemissza, née Karola Szilvássy (1876 – 1948), an internationalist Transylvanian aristocrat, primarily known as the famous literary patron of Erdélyi Helikon and lifelong muse of Count Miklós Bánffy de Losoncz, who immortalized her through the character of Adrienne Milóth in his Erdélyi trilógia [‘The Transylvanian Trilogy’]. Research on Karola Szilvássy is still scarce with little known about the life of this maverick woman, who did not comply with the norms of her society. She was an actress and film director during the silent film era, courageous nurse in the World War I, as well as unusual fashion trendsetter, gourmet cookbook writer, Africa traveler—in short, a source of inspiration for many women of her time, and after.     W. Kovács András [email protected] A cegei Wass család története (16–20. század)* A cegei Wass család leszármazása a 14. század elejétől máig folyamatosan levezethető. A Wass-levéltár elsősorban középkori (1542 előtti) részének viszonylagos gazdagságával tűnik ki, de az újabb kori rész is – bár koronként és áganként változó mennyiségben komoly veszte- ségeket szenvedett – lehetővé teszi a rokonság történetének felvázolását.1 Az előzmények is- meretesek: az Árpád-korban, talán III. Béla király (1172–1196) uralkodása alatt jelentősebb birtokadományt kaptak Doboka vármegyében, majd a 14. században többen közülük – főképpen az Erdélynek több vajdát adó Lackfiak familiárisaiként – megyésispáni és várnagyi tisztségeket viseltek, de később visszasüllyedtek a megyei nemesség szintjére. Közhivatalt újra már csak a 16. század elején vállaltak, de a jelek szerint ez utóbbi századra vonatkozó iratokat megtizedelték az ismeretlen korban végrehajtott levéltár-selejtezések. Források A família újabb kori történetének legfontosabb forrása természetesen a Wass-levéltár, ame- lyik a kutatók nagy szerencséjére úgy menekült meg a pusztulástól, hogy a 20. század elején a család letétbe helyezte az Erdélyi Nemzeti Múzeum Levéltárába (ENMLt). Fontos adatokat őr- zött meg a családtag Wass Ottilia (1829–1917) irathagyatéka, valamint a Jósika család hitbizo- mányi levéltára. Ezek ugyancsak az ENMLt-nek részei, jelenleg pedig mindhárom a kolozsvári állami levéltár kezelésében van. Sajnos a Wass-levéltár nem őrizte meg a családtagok szomorújelentéseit és az elhunytak fe- lett elmondott halotti beszédeket, márpedig a 18–20. századból való születési és elhalálozási adatoknak ezek igen fontos forrásai. Ezeket könyvtárak és levéltárak ilyen jellegű sorozataiból kellett összegyűjteni.2 Az így egybeszedett anyagot a Hamburgban élő cegei gr.     Papi Through My Eyes: Recollections by a Son of Wass Albert Brigadier General Huba Wass de Czege, US Army Retired Papi, my father Wass Albert, the author, would have been 100 on January 8th, 2008. This commemorates our loss these ten years since he has been gone, but it also celebrates the long and productive 90 years he served as an example and mentor to us and every one he touched in person or through his work. What follows was originally offered as an epilogue to the Szabad Ter Kiado version’s of Wass Albert’s Voltam, a special collection published in Budapest in 2006 of autobrographical writings Wass Albert began even before the Second World War, and while still in Erdely. But, rightly, the editors thought it best to have Wass Albert be the sole voice in that book. Here is an amended version of that ealier project in English. A shorter Hungarian version will appear in the more complete edition of Voltam being prepared by Mentor Kiado from Erdely. This English version is prompted by my participation in the XLVII Hungarian American Congress in Cleveland, Ohio on 23 and 24 November 2007, which was to a great extent dedicated to commemorating my father’s work in America in behalf of the Hungarians left behind the Iron Curtain. This work is to satisfy an immediate, and sincere interest in Papi’s life, and how we viewed his life and work within the Hungarian American community. Izvorni znanstveni rad https://doi.org/10.22586/pp.v40i60.11664 Florin Nicolae Ardelean * Neven Isailović ** From Croatia to Transylvania: War, Migration, and Adaptive Strategies in the Case of the Perušić Family (15th-17th Centuries) The article gives the history of the noble Croatian family of Perušić, following the life and career of its main male representatives across three generations, from its emergence in sources in the mid-15th century up until its extinction in the male line in 1603. All three men – Gaspar (Gašpar) the Elder, Gaspar the Younger, and Matthew (Mate) – had primar- ily military careers, leading cavalry units and fighting either the Turks or other Christian nobles in civil wars which burdened Croatia, Slavonia, Hungary, and Transylvania from the late 15th to the early 17th century. Gaspar the Elder was the vice-ban of Croatia-Dalma- tia and is a relatively well-known figure in Croatian historiography, while the lives of his son and grandson are thoroughly researched for the first time in this article. Gaspar the Younger, initially a supporter of the Habsburgs, was fighting the Ottomans in Croatia un- til 1532, with significant success, and was later engaged in civil strife in Slavonia, changing the sides he supported several times. He finally opted for King John Zápolya around 1538 and migrated to Zápolya’s realm, settling finally in Transylvania, where he gained many estates and served several de jure and de facto rulers, including another fellow Croat – the bishop of Oradea, George Martinuzzi (Juraj Utišenović Martinušević).
