Pegasus Quantum 15-912, G-BZSS AAIB Bulletin: 10/2019 G-BZSS EW/G2019/04/09 ACCIDENT Aircraft Type and Registration: Pegasus Quantum 15-912, G-BZSS No & Type of Engines: 1 Rotax 912 piston engine Year of Manufacture: 2001 (Serial no: 7770) Date & Time (UTC): 20 April 2019 at 1400 hrs Location: RAF Oakley (disused), Buckinghamshire Type of Flight: Private Persons on Board: Crew - 1 Passengers - 1 Injuries: Crew - 1 (Minor) Passengers - 1 (Minor) Nature of Damage: Substantial Commander’s Licence: National Private Pilot’s Licence Commander’s Age: 56 years Commander’s Flying Experience: 413 hours (of which 23 were on type) Last 90 days - 5 hours Last 28 days - 4 hours Information Source: Aircraft Accident Report Form submitted by the pilot During the approach to Holmbeck Farm Airfield, the aircraft encountered ‘sink’ on final approach. The pilot was unable to arrest the high rate of descent despite adding power and flaring. The aircraft made a hard landing that caused substantial damage; including to its base tube, front strut, right main and nose landing gear, Figures 1 and 2. This damage resulted in the foot throttle becoming jammed at a high power setting. He also decided to return to RAF Oakley (now disused), his home base, as it had a larger concrete runway. During the return flight, the pilot alerted emergency services using the emergency frequency. After a short hold overhead, to allow arrival of the emergency services, the pilot selected the ignition systems off and carried out a successful ‘dead-stick’ emergency landing. The pilot and passenger received minor injuries and were assisted by the emergency services. © Crown copyright 2019 68 All times are UTC.

[email protected] Abstract of the Proposed Talk: One of the goals of IPPW has been to bring about international collaboration. Establishing collaboration, especially in the area of EDL, can present numerous frustrating challenges. IPPW presents opportunities to present advances in various technology areas. It allows for opportunity for general discussion. Evaluating collaboration potential requires open dialogue as to the needs of the parties and what critical capabilities each party possesses. Understanding opportunities for collaboration as well as the rules and regulations that govern collaboration are essential. The authors of this proposed talk have explored and established collaboration in multiple areas of interest to IPPW community. The authors will present examples that illustrate the motivations for the partnership, our common goals, and the unique capabilities of each party. The first example involves earth entry of a large asteroid and break-up. NASA Ames is leading an effort for the agency to assess and estimate the threat posed by large asteroids under the Asteroid Threat Assessment Project (ATAP).

    Landing Events Penalties General Judges should use airport diagrams, satellite pictures or other means to determine, as accurately as possible, assessments of landing pattern penalties. Judges should be in a position on the airport to view the geographic positions selected from the diagrams or photos to determine when there is an airplane deviation that results in a penalty. The geographic track that defines a proper landing pattern track should be distributed to all contestants prior to the scheduled landing practice periods using airport diagrams and/or satellite pictures A Card Enter the distance scores on the contestant’s card for landings 1, 2, and 3 (if 3 landings are made). Assign 400 points if the touchdown was outside of the landing box. In the event of a go-around (due to the contestant’s fault) the judge may write the words “Go Around” or “GA” in place of a distance score. The penalty points for a go-around will be assessed on the G card. Scoring criteria for crosswind landings: o If a crosswind exists, crosswind rules as outlined in the NIFA Red Book are in effect. Contestants in the active landing heat will be notified that crosswind rules are in effect by the placement of a large colored panel or flags adjacent to he target line, and if possible by radio transmission. The panel or flag placement is the primary means of notifying contestants; therefore contestants should be aware of the wind conditions and be looking for the panel if the winds are variable. Contestants should not depend on the radio transmission as the primary means of notification that crosswind rules are in effect.

As part of a study on flight safety, this article introduces the profile of the Chinese civil aircraft hard landing primarily. The data in the flight data recorder (FDR) doesn’t show how deep of the damages to aircraft which caused by hard landing. This situation may cause security risks.This article has played a warning role for security risks. Introduction Small occurrence and mortality are characteristics of civil aviation accidents. Because of its extensive social influence, ‘aviation security’ is an very important indicator of the civil aviation. From 1996 to 2005, there were about 200 accidents happened worldwide, according to global accident statistics of Flight Safety Foundation (FSF) and Boeing. Most accidents happened in approach and landing phases, although it account for only 4 per cent of the flight time, it account for up to 59 per cent (118 accidents) of all cases [1]. In the aeronautical world, referring to ‘hard landing’, there is a convention established by usage: when an aircraft is landing, it seems like a brick "hits" the airstrip. Actually, there is a clear sense from the strike on the bottom [2].
