PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

This has been a very exciting year so far, but not as exciting as it is going to be. This is due to the celebrations for the past 50 wonderful years in our community.

If you passed through the doors of the North Bendale Junior Public School in the past, you will want to pass through them again on Saturday, October 2, 2010 when they celebrate their 50th anniversary. Wouldn’t it be worth it to see your favourite teacher again?

Now that you have your calendar out, don’t forget about the kick-off gala to begin the 50th celebration for the North Bendale Community Association. We have booked the Blue Danube for Friday, December 3rd.

We have had a full board of directors for each of the past 50 years. Let’s not stop at 50. We need neighbours like you to come together to help continue this amazing tradition. Please come out to one of our meetings that are held on a Wednesday evening at the North Bendale School. The next two meetings are scheduled for October 20th and November 17th at 7 pm.

Yvonne Taylor

Our last North Bendale AGM took place on Wednesday, April 21, 2010. We had an impressive turn-out from the community. Our new Board of Directors was nominated and accepted. Many thanks go out to all who volunteered last year. Without you, there would be no Association.

We were fortunate to have three guest speakers: · Scott Harrison, TDSB School Trustee for Scarborough Centre, spoke to us about the effect that "all day" kindergarten would have on North Bendale Junior Public School classrooms. · , City Councillor for Scarborough Centre, was there to show his support for the community and say a few words. He talked about a number of projects around the area that will be undertaken as a result of some $6 million of funding provided by the developers over the years. · Brad Duguid, MPP for Scarborough Centre and Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, spoke to us about his new portfolio. Brad recently held a contest to identify people who practice everyday kindness to others, and was pleased to present five Kindness Awards to families resident on Erinlea Cr.

Refreshments were served at the end of the meeting. Our next North Bendale AGM will take place on Wednesday, April 20, 2011

Kindness Award Winners From the Office of Brad Duguid, MPP

On September 17, 2009 the Legislative Assembly of passed a motion to recognize the third week in February as Kindness Week in Ontario.

Kindness Week is an opportunity for people in communities across the province to celebrate simple acts of kindness and goodwill towards their fellow citizens. The important goal is to get people thinking about how their actions can touch their neighbours, friends, family – even strangers.

Brad Duguid’s first annual Show Your Kindness Contest was launched in January 2010. Several worthy nominations were received. Scarborough Centre residents demonstrated with simple acts of kindness why this is such a great place to live and work.

The contest winners were awarded on April 21, 2010 at the North Bendale Community Association Annual General Members’ meeting. Congratulations to Cameron and Benjamin Malcolm, Bobby, Andrea and Joaquin Lagman, Jim and Lila McIndoe and the Douros family for making the North Bendale community such a positive part of the Scarborough Centre riding.

As another school year begins, I would like to thank everyone for the care, concern and support that you give to our students and staff. The school is an outstanding place to be! I am so proud of the professionalism of our staff, the enthusiasm, work ethic and kindness that our students show, the support that our parents and community members demonstrate, and the caretaking that goes into our building everyday. Thank you to Mrs. Alfano, our office administrator for always addressing phone calls in such a helpful way.

Staff and students at North Bendale will continue to get involved in extra-curricular activities. Our students will compete at the Brock Gordon Cross-Country Meet on Saturday, October 2nd, at Thomson Park. Running against much larger schools is always challenging and our students will give it their all. Throughout the year our students will compete in volleyball, slo-pitch, soccer, and track and field. They will also participate in events like the Folk Dance Jamboree and Art Club. They are an enthusiastic bunch! Participation in extra curricular activities give our students an opportunity to learn the value of teamwork and good sportsmanship. Congratulations to Emma Carrington who was awarded the Athlete of the year for the 2010 graduating class and thank you to the North Bendale Community Association for donating and presenting that award. If you are interested in volunteering some of your time for clubs or for reading with our students, please contact me at the office.

North Bendale will participate in the Terry Fox Walk this fall and you are more than welcome to join us. Keeping active and supporting this very worthwhile cause helps to build and develop character, respect and responsibility, which are positive attributes we like to see reflected in our community. Thank you in advance to all of our students, staff, parents and community members for your donations.

We continue to develop our curriculum focus on literacy and numeracy and just hosted a Book Fair. We are looking forward to a successful Family Literacy Night. We also have special assemblies throughout the year such as Remembrance Day and our Seasonal Celebration. Please accept our invitation to attend those special events as well.

We are making plans to celebrate our 50th Anniversary on Saturday, October 2, 2010. There will be a formal presentation at 10:30 a.m. Please visit our decade rooms, School Council BBQ, vintage cars, North Bendale Community Association tea room and other anniversary presentations. If you have any items, memorabilia or stories that you would like to share, please contact the school at 416-396-6495.

NBCA WEBSITE: WWW.NORTHBENDALE.ORG PARENTS AND CHILDREN ALL GRADUATES OF NORTH BENDALE PUBLIC SCHOOL

It has come to our attention that some residents have children who attend the same local elementary school as their parents did. Celebrating the North Bendale Public School’s 50th Anniversary, the following profile was written by Angela Boorne following an interview with Lori Stevenson.

LORI STEVENSON (NEE JOHNSTON)) was a student at North Bendale from 1967 to 1974 and grew up on Sunderland Cres. Her husband, Brian Stevenson, graduated from North Bendale in 1970 and grew up on Bainhart Cres. Their son Darryl graduated from North Bendale in 1998 and daughter Shannon graduated in 2003. They purchased a home on Bainhart Cres. in 1986 where they continue to reside.

Lori received the athletic award in her Grade 6 year and was an active athlete who excelled in all sports. Lori enjoyed singing in the North Bendale choir and liked the daily spelling bee that her grade 6 teacher would conduct. She remembers that if by Friday noon, you happened to be the student at the top of his graph (a pyramid shape), you would be treated to a MacDonald’s milkshake! (Those were the days!). Having graduated from J.S. Woodsworth and Woburn Collegiate, Lori married and had her children, all the while volunteering in the community through running the playschool at North Bendale for a few years, coaching and managing baseball for many years and participating on the Parent School Council for the duration of her children’s attendance at North Bendale. Lori always had a soft spot in her heart for children and a dream to be a teacher herself. She loved North Bendale P.S. and the environment there. Now that the children are grown up, she has a bank career and can devote more time to that. She continues to serve on the North Bendale Community Association Board of Directors.

Brian also graduated from J.S, Woodsworth and Woburn and works as a Regional Manager for a Wholesale Company. He has fond memories of taking the family dog to the school during his children’s tenure there where they visited the special Education Room window. The excited children would open the window and feed Chance some dog cookies through “the doggie drive through window”. Brian grew up playing Rep Ball in the North Bendale Softball Association for many years and then switched to coaching for the Association. He and Lori later ran the NB softball league for 14 years and Brian continues to coach his daughter for the Scarborough Stingrays.

Darryl graduated from J.S. Woodsworth and Woburn Collegiate, and then moved on to Niagara College where he earned a Landscape Design diploma. He then furthered his career with studies at Humber College where he trained to be an arborist. Darryl currently works for the City of Toronto as an Arborist. Darryl also spent most of his youth participating in sports such as hockey and baseball and continues those activities in his free time. He has fond memories of all the outdoor education opportunities that were available to him while he attended North Bendale.

Shannon was involved in most school sports at North Bendale and also received an Athletic Award in her grade 6 year. She was also presented with Leadership/Principal awards while at North Bendale. After J.S. Woodsworth, Shannon went to high school at R.H. King Academy, where she was enrolled in the ‘Leadership Pathways Program’ and served as school president in her Grade 12 year. Shannon is currently in her second year of ‘concurrent education’ at Nipissing University which will take her into a much desired teaching career. Her mother thinks that Shannon would say her grade 2 teacher, Miss Caliguri, was the inspiration for her to enter the teaching profession. Shannon continues with sports by playing fastball for the Scarborough Stingrays and hockey for her University team.

NBCA WEBSITE: WWW.NORTHBENDALE.ORG SECOND GENERATION AT NORTH BENDALE PUBLIC SCHOOL

It has come to our attention that some residents have children who attend the same local elementary school as their parents did. Celebrating the North Bendale Public School’s 50th Anniversary, the following profile was written by Angela Boorne following an interview with Sharon Cashman.

SHARON CASHMAN (nee Cunningham) was a student at North Bendale from 1966 to 1973, and a member of this community all her life. Her son Chris graduated from North Bendale in 1998, and her daughter Tricia graduated in 2000.

As a student, Sharon was very active in every sport that the school could offer, and remembers that Grace Rock, another athlete, had a brother (Richard) who excelled in track and field, and went on to the Olympics. She recalls that the school population was so large in those days, that there were at least 6 portables on the school property.

While at North Bendale, Sharon enjoyed singing in the choir and being part of the Scarborough Choir, which had the honour of singing for Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip, who were present for the opening of the Scarborough Civic Centre. She fondly remembers Mrs. Deacon, the music teacher, Ms. Breen, her grade 2 teacher, and Mrs. Purdy, who taught her phys-ed. As well, Sharon recalls Miss Cathers, the history and geography teacher, who, during class, always had interesting stories to tell about her worldly travels.

After marrying and having her family, Sharon built a solid career with IBM, where she continues to work and meet new challenges. As well as currently volunteering through her workplace, Sharon had in the past run volleyball for adults, and run the playschool for several years, at the school of her youth. She has also served as a baseball coach, and as a member of the North Bendale Community Association. Today, ever the athlete, she continues to play baseball, tennis, and golf. The community is fortunate to have Sharon as the president of North Bendale Tennis Club.

Chris Cashman graduated from North Bendale and J.S. Woodsworth. After high school at Woburn Collegiate, Chris went on to graduate from York University. Currently Chris is working for the City of Toronto, and still enjoys playing hockey.

Tricia Cashman received an Athletic Award in her grade 6 year at North Bendale. She went to high school at Woburn Collegiate, and after graduating, is currently in college at Seneca, and finds time to work part- time. Trish’s choice of sport these days is Lacrosse.

“We were just stopping through, when we bought my parents’ house.” Sharon said. “We never intended to stay so long (29 years).”

NBCA WEBSITE: WWW.NORTHBENDALE.ORG NORTH BENDALE TENNIS CLUB

An ambitious school program launched Spring and Summer tennis. This year we offered 3 rounds of tennis instruction to the four nearest elementary schools. We thank the principals and teachers for their support of the program. Many thanks to Alison Moore and Lisa Sawyer for assisting coach John, Harvey, and I, in this endeavour.

Our Annual May Social Day was held on Saturday May 1st. It was a good turnout with folks having great fun, and good snacks.

CONGRATULATIONS to our girls’ team, who, in their first year, placed first in STF junior interclub matches. CONGRATULATIONS are also in order for the boys’ team, who, in their second year of play, placed third in STF junior interclub matches!!

Some junior team members entered a number of STF tournaments over the summer. North Bendale Tennis Club hosted a tournament for girls under 12 to under 18 years of age, over the weekend of June 25-27.

Our children did well in the tournaments. Sankavy won the championship for girls under 18, twice, in two separate tournaments. Keeping it in the family, her sister Ragavey, was the runner up for girls under 18. Sankavy and Ragavey also won the championship in girls doubles under 16. Arden was runner up for girls under 14. Parth was runner up for boys under 16. Harsh and his partner won the championship for boys doubles under 14. What accomplishments – congratulations to all!

Overall, our community has good reason to be proud of the junior team members. Not only did they work hard at their own tennis, but they also volunteered, and helped younger children, both in the lesson groups, and also in the three summer camps held at the courts. They have my heartfelt thanks! There was a great time had by those who attended our ‘Fun in the Sun Family Day’ held on the rainout date of Sunday July 25th.

As always, we invite you to come out and try your hand at tennis, so please join us for our End of Season Get Together, Sunday, October 3rd. Adults play from 10 a.m. to noon. Children and adults join us at 12 noon for a light lunch. The children will play from 1 to 3 p.m.

North Bendale Residents needed – Participation required

The residents of this fine community have generously been provided space every Thursday evening in our local School Gymnasium at no cost to ourselves. The Gym at North Bendale Public School will be available for any ADULT sporting event that you wish to participate in from 6:45 till 8:45 pm. We have had some residents mention that they would like to use the gym for a North Bendale Volleyball league but any other sporting activity ( i.e.: Basketball, Badminton etc) could also be played if the demand is there. Even a game of progressive Euchre could be arranged if that is what the residents would enjoy.

This is our space to use and the Community needs to take advantage of this great opportunity. Come out to North Bendale Public School on Thursday, October 7th at 6:45 pm and we can see what the residents are interested in taking part in. A rotating schedule could be made up to accommodate the different activities that may be of interest to the community residents if more than one activity is in great demand.

Don’t let this precious free space go unused. Gather your neighbours and come out Thursday, October 7th, 2010 with your ideas to use the space and your gym attire to start your new activity program.

NBCA WEBSITE: WWW.NORTHBENDALE.ORG Erinlea Street Party

Over the past 10 years, Erinlea families have participated in the annual event that is literally, on the street, in late spring. Neighbours bring all the food and entertainment that we need as we set our lawn chairs and table near the curb, and rekindle the neighbourly spirit that sometimes goes into hibernation over the winter. After eating, dancing and games, a solemn moment occurs; we pay tribute to our friends’ gains and losses over the past year. Some have celebrated special birthdays, anniversaries, sacraments and achievements; while others have suffered a loss or illness. It’s nice to take notice and support each others’ lives through the good times and the tough times. Our street party is simple, with kids laughing, running and crying, dogs barking and peo- ple coming and going, but that’s what life is all about on our street. It’s about the little things that make you feel comfortable to ask for a special favour or to offer a hand when needed. A street party “is a wonderful tra- dition that brings us all together, the young and the old” (Jim Fraser #28 Erinlea Cres.)

If you are new to the neighbourhood or eager to make your street a better place to live, try organising a street party. It only takes two or three families to get it going. Invite all your neighbours, delegate some jobs and then pull your BBQ and lawn chairs to the curb. Presto, you have started a new tradition of starting the sum- mer with a neighbourly spirit.
