This is due to the celebrations for the past 50 wonderful years in our community. If you passed through the doors of the North Bendale Junior Public School in the past, you will want to pass through them again on Saturday, October 2, 2010 when they celebrate their 50th anniversary. Wouldn’t it be worth it to see your favourite teacher again? Now that you have your calendar out, don’t forget about the kick-off gala to begin the 50th celebration for the North Bendale Community Association. We have booked the Blue Danube for Friday, December 3rd. We have had a full board of directors for each of the past 50 years. Let’s not stop at 50. We need neighbours like you to come together to help continue this amazing tradition. Please come out to one of our meetings that are held on a Wednesday evening at the North Bendale School. The next two meetings are scheduled for October 20th and November 17th at 7 pm. Yvonne Taylor NBCA WEBSITE: WWW.NORTHBENDALE.ORG With the coming of fall we celebrate the first anniversary of the operation of our website. Page 3 NBCA WEBSITE: WWW.NORTHBENDALE.ORG Annual General Meeting Yvonne Taylor Our last North Bendale AGM took place on Wednesday, April 21, 2010. We had an impressive turn-out from the community. Our new Board of Directors was nominated and accepted. Many thanks go out to all who volunteered last year. Without you, there would be no Association. We were fortunate to have three guest speakers: · Scott Harrison, TDSB School Trustee for Scarborough Centre, spoke to us about the effect that "all day" kindergarten would have on North Bendale Junior Public School classrooms. · Glenn de Baeremaeker, City Councillor for Scarborough Centre, was there to show his support for the community and say a few words. He talked about a number of projects around the area that will be undertaken as a result of some $6 million of funding provided by the developers over the years. · Brad Duguid, MPP for Scarborough Centre and Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, spoke to us about his new portfolio. Brad recently held a contest to identify people who practice everyday kindness to others, and was pleased to present five Kindness Awards to families resident on Erinlea Cr. Refreshments were served at the end of the meeting. Our next North Bendale AGM will take place on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 Kindness Award Winners From the Office of Brad Duguid, MPP On September 17, 2009 the Legislative Assembly of Ontario passed a motion to recognize the third week in February as Kindness Week in Ontario. Kindness Week is an opportunity for people in communities across the province to celebrate simple acts of kindness and goodwill towards their fellow citizens. The important goal is to get people thinking about how their actions can touch their neighbours, friends, family – even strangers. Brad Duguid’s first annual Show Your Kindness Contest was launched in January 2010. Several worthy nominations were received. Scarborough Centre residents demonstrated with simple acts of kindness why this is such a great place to live and work. The contest winners were awarded on April 21, 2010 at the North Bendale Community Association Annual General Members’ meeting. Congratulations to Cameron and Benjamin Malcolm, Bobby, Andrea and Joaquin Lagman, Jim and Lila McIndoe and the Douros family for making the North Bendale community such a positive part of the Scarborough Centre riding. The school is an outstanding place to be! I am so proud of the professionalism of our staff, the enthusiasm, work ethic and kindness that our students show, the support that our parents and community members demonstrate, and the caretaking that goes into our building everyday. Thank you to Mrs. Alfano, our office administrator for always addressing phone calls in such a helpful way. Staff and students at North Bendale will continue to get involved in extra-curricular activities. Our students will compete at the Brock Gordon Cross-Country Meet on Saturday, October 2nd, at Thomson Park. Running against much larger schools is always challenging and our students will give it their all. Throughout the year our students will compete in volleyball, slo-pitch, soccer, and track and field. They will also participate in events like the Folk Dance Jamboree and Art Club. They are an enthusiastic bunch! Participation in extra curricular activities give our students an opportunity to learn the value of teamwork and good sportsmanship. Congratulations to Emma Carrington who was awarded the Athlete of the year for the 2010 graduating class and thank you to the North Bendale Community Association for donating and presenting that award. If you are interested in volunteering some of your time for clubs or for reading with our students, please contact me at the office. North Bendale will participate in the Terry Fox Walk this fall and you are more than welcome to join us. Keeping active and supporting this very worthwhile cause helps to build and develop character, respect and responsibility, which are positive attributes we like to see reflected in our community. Thank you in advance to all of our students, staff, parents and community members for your donations.
