GUNSMOKE TV CAST AND DETAILS Premiered: September 10, 1955, on CBS Rating: TV-PG Premise: This landmark adult Western centered on Marshal Matt Dillon of Dodge City. John Wayne turned down the lead, suggesting James Arness (who remained for its entire run). Originating on radio (with William Conrad as Dillon), it moved to TV in September 1955. Its popularity spawned a number of copycats, but none would enjoy the longevity (and few the consistent quality) of this classic. Airing for 20 years, it's TV's longest running prime-time drama (a record that `Law & Order' is currently chasing). Murphy And Nicolas Murphy “It is the modern Kabbalists who know there is always a remainder when a duplicate is made.” -John Durham Peters, PhD “Girls just wanna have fun.” -Xenu, Grand High Lord of the Galaxy 2 PART 1 Chapter 1 Gilligan’s Island Light suffused the room from a source he could not determine. It was happening again as it had happened before, but this time Russ was awake. The greenish glow made his vintage This Island Earth poster look prophetic, and suddenly there was nothing funny about the wasp-headed monster pawing the lead actress while flying saucers zipped across a background of exploding planets. Small creatures were definitely in his room. He saw one when it stopped briefly at the foot of his bed. The small humanoid had wrinkly skin, a lightbulb-shaped head, and large dark eyes that seemed to let out no emotion. He knew he should be panicking but surprisingly he wasn’t, assuming they had already done something to calm his brain. It amused him that Hollywood had gotten some of the details right, though the curious lizard-like creatures scampering around didn’t seem to be anywhere near Spielberg’s fantasy of interplanetary friendliness. Russ’ body and mouth were frozen by some unknown force that prevented him from calling out to his wife, sleeping peacefully next to him in her flowered cotton nightgown. Part of him was glad he wasn’t able to awaken her. This wasn’t a couple’s thing.

Created by Sherwood Schwartz and inspired by “Robinson Crusoe,” Schwartz developed what he believed to be a meaningful show that represented various citizens of America, brought together to survive on a deserted island. With his selection of characters -- the wealthy, the glamour girl, a brainiac, a wholesome girl, the misfit and the resourceful bull of a man -- Schwartz had hoped that the audience would find someone on the island with whom they could identify.

  • Ridgmont Personal Care August 2020 Looking Back: Gilligan's Island
Ridgmont Personal Care August 2020 Looking Back: Gilligan’s Island Gilligan's Island is an American sitcom created and produced by Sherwood Schwartz. The show had an ensemble cast that featured Bob Denver, Alan Hale Jr., Jim Backus, Natalie Schafer, Russell Johnson, Tina Louise, and Dawn Wells. The show featured a two-man crew of the charter boat SS Minnow and five passengers on a "three-hour tour" from Honolulu run into a typhoon and are shipwrecked on an uncharted island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. Their efforts to be rescued are typically thwarted by the inadvertent conduct of the hapless first mate, Gilligan. It aired for three seasons on the CBS network from September 26, 1964, to April 17, 1967. The series followed the comic adventures of seven castaways as they attempted to survive on an island on which they had been shipwrecked. Most episodes revolve around the dissimilar castaways' conflicts and their unsuccessful attempts, for whose failure Gilligan was frequently responsible, to escape their plight. Gilligan's Island ran for 98 episodes. All thirty-six episodes of the first season were filmed in black and white and were later colorized for syndication. The show's second and third seasons (62 episodes) and the three television movie sequels (aired between 1978 and 1982) were filmed in color. The show received solid ratings during its original run, then grew in popularity during decades of syndication, especially in the 1970s and 1980s when many markets ran the show in the late afternoon. Today, the title character of Gilligan is widely recognized as an American cultural icon.

  • Shakespeare on Film and Television in the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress
SHAKESPEARE ON FILM AND TELEVISION IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by Zoran Sinobad January 2012 Introduction This is an annotated guide to moving image materials related to the life and works of William Shakespeare in the collections of the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. While the guide encompasses a wide variety of items spanning the history of film, TV and video, it does not attempt to list every reference to Shakespeare or every quote from his plays and sonnets which have over the years appeared in hundreds (if not thousands) of motion pictures and TV shows. For titles with only a marginal connection to the Bard or one of his works, the decision what to include and what to leave out was often difficult, even when based on their inclusion or omission from other reference works on the subject (see below). For example, listing every film about ill-fated lovers separated by feuding families or other outside forces, a narrative which can arguably always be traced back to Romeo and Juliet, would be a massive undertaking on its own and as such is outside of the present guide's scope and purpose. Consequently, if looking for a cinematic spin-off, derivative, plot borrowing or a simple citation, and not finding it in the guide, users are advised to contact the Moving Image Reference staff for additional information. How to Use this Guide Entries are grouped by titles of plays and listed chronologically within the group by release/broadcast date.
