Bronstein This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported License iii DISSERTATION ABSTRACT Phoebe Bronstein Doctor of Philosophy Department of English September 2013 Title: Televising the South: Race, Gender, and Region in Primetime, 1955-1980 This dissertation traces the emergence of the U.S. South and the region’s role in primetime television, from the post-World War II era through Reagan’s election in 1980. These early years defined, as Herman Gray suggests in Watching Race, all subsequent representations of blackness on television. This defining moment, I argue, is one inextricably tethered to the South and the region’s anxiety ridden and complicated relationship with television. This anxiety was rooted in the progress and increasing visibility of the Civil Rights Movement, concern over growing white southern audiences in the wake of the FCC freeze (ended in 1952), and the fear and threat of a southern backlash against racially progressive programming. -

Message from the President Dear Friends, There was much to celebrate during this past year at Marywood University. From a personal perspective, it was a transformative experience to serve my inaugural year as Marywood’s 11th president. However, I do not and could not do this alone. While this special year has provided an exciting backdrop, the meaningful role that each of you plays in shaping the future of this University is the underpinning of what continues to inspire and create our outstanding progress. In keeping with the spirit of progress, we decided this year to produce a “green” President’s Report— a solely online piece—to reduce our use of paper products and take another positive step in our ongoing efforts to cultivate and practice environmental stewardship. According to The Chronicle of Higher Education, “institutions of higher education are poised to play a leading role in developing and executing climate-neutral policies.” (“A Green Curriculum Involves Everyone on the Campus,” by John Peterson, June 20, 2008 issue) Marywood University continues to evaluate its current practices and engage in future initiatives with environmental considerations in mind—for the benefit of our students, our campus, our community, and our world. This report represents the fiscal year 2007-2008, covering the period July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008. Please accept my deepest appreciation for all you have done to advance the goals, initiatives, and mission of Marywood University. She’s an actress, producer, author, spokesperson, journalist, motivational speaker, teacher, and chairwoman of the Terry Lee Wells Foundation-- focusing on women and children in Northern Nevada. She has starred in over 150 tv shows, and 7 motion pictures, including WINTERHAWK (which she also narrated), THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN (with Andrew Prine), SUPER SUCKER (with Jeff Daniels), THE NEW INTERNS, IT’S OUR TIME, and most recently, SILENT BUT DEADLY. She has starred in 60+ theatrical productions from Noel Coward to Neil Simon, as well as the National Tours of CHAPTER TWO and THEY’RE PLAYING OUR SONG. Favorite productions include FATAL ATTRACTION with Ken Howard, THE ODD COUPLE with Marcia Wallace, THE ALLERGIST’S WIFE, STEEL MAGNOLIAS (Ouiser), and THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES. Dawn has starred as Gingy in LOVE. LOSS AND WHAT I WORE (by Nora and Delia Ephron) in New York, Chicago, Delaware, Scottsdale, and San Jose. She was the “castaway correspondent” for Channel 9 (Sydney, Australia) interviewing such actors and directors as Robin Williams, Eddie Murphy, Julia Roberts, Rene Russo, Mel Gibson, Ron Howard, and Richard Donner. And recently just presented Sandra Bullock with a Coconut Cream Pie, as the two women both knew what it’s like to be stranded, for the premiere of GRAVITY. Hayes 2009 PREFACE When the University of Wyoming began collecting the papers of national entertainment figures in the 1970s, it was one of only a handful of repositories actively engaged in the field. Business and industry, science, family history, even print literature were all recognized as legitimate fields of study while prejudice remained against mere entertainment as a source of scholarship. There are two arguments to be made against this narrow vision. In the first place, entertainment is very much an industry. It employs thousands. It requires vast capital expenditure, and it lives or dies on profit. In the second place, popular culture is more universal than any other field. Each individual’s experience is unique, but one common thread running throughout humanity is the desire to be taken out of ourselves, to share with our neighbors some story of humor or adventure. This is the basis for entertainment. The Entertainment Industry collections at the American Heritage Center focus on the twentieth century. During the twentieth century, entertainment in the United States changed radically due to advances in communications technology. The development of radio made it possible for the first time for people on both coasts to listen to a performance simultaneously. The delivery of entertainment thus became immensely cheaper and, at the same time, the fame of individual performers grew. -

GUNSMOKE TV CAST AND DETAILS Premiered: September 10, 1955, on CBS Rating: TV-PG Premise: This landmark adult Western centered on Marshal Matt Dillon of Dodge City. John Wayne turned down the lead, suggesting James Arness (who remained for its entire run). Originating on radio (with William Conrad as Dillon), it moved to TV in September 1955. Its popularity spawned a number of copycats, but none would enjoy the longevity (and few the consistent quality) of this classic. Airing for 20 years, it's TV's longest running prime-time drama (a record that `Law & Order' is currently chasing).
