They were collected mainly from 1920s to 1930s by the Wildlife Research Laboratory of the Ministry of Agriculture at that time. The collection includes many specimens of birds that had collided with lighthouses during migration and specimens collected from the Kurile Islands. Key words : 4,790 bird skins, Collided birds with the lighthouse, Kurile Islands Introduction specimens and are in greatest demand for scientific surveys. Many wildlife specimens collected by the Ministry of Recently, T. Mishima donated his collection of many wildlife Agriculture have been kept in the Forestry and Forest Products specimens to FFPRI and a list of 5,080 bird skins have already Research Institute (FFPRI). Although collection dates of them been published (Kawaji et al., 2002). The two lists cover nearly range from 1880s to 1990s, more than 80% were collected 10,000 bird skins kept in FFPRI. between 1920s and 1930s by staffs of the Wildlife Research The list consists of order, family, species, English name, Laboratory at that time. Following the loss of most specimens Japanese name, specimen number, sex, age, collection date, by the Great Earthquake of 1923, they made much effort for locality and collector’s name as almost same as Kawaji et al. collecting new ones in cooperation with concerning people and (2002). Because the specimens were described in accordance institutions (Matsuyama, 1989, 1997). They asked, for example, with the classification system in place when the collections had many lighthouse keepers in Japanese territory at that time to been conducted, some of the scientific names have changed over send birds that had collided with the lighthouse during the years. In this list, we revised the scientific names of the migration. Those bodies provided about 1,000 specimens as birds in Japan referring to the Ornithological Society of Japan well as new information about bird migration in Japan (e.g. (2000). For those species that were not included in the Ishizawa, 1960, 1961). They also asked governmental institutes Ornithological Society of Japan (2000), the scientific names, of marine products in the Kurile Islands to observe and collect English and Japanese names were revised referring to birds. The specimens from the Kurile amounted more than 900 Yamashina (1986) and del Hoyo et al. (1992, 1994, 1996, 1997, and some of them have been used in a pioneering paper about 1999, 2001, 2002). Although some of the region names have avifauna of the Kurile Islands (Yamashina, 1929). The changed, we did not change the locality names on the labels and collection, fortunately, was saved from the air raids on Tokyo in the list but translated the names into English. The species are the Second World War and has been used in various arranged based upon the Ornithological Society of Japan (2000), ornithological papers until today (e.g. Uchida, 1921: Mishima, Peters’ Check-lists of birds of the world (I-XV, 1934-1986), and 1962: Kawaji and Higuchi, 1989: Noma and Yumoto, 1997: Vaurie (1959, 1965). All the specimens are listed in groups of Artukhin et al., 2001). species. To aid the use of the valuable collection, we have prepared a list of 4,790 bird skins, which constitute the majority of the 原稿受付:平成15年3月31日 Received Mar. 31, 2003 原稿受理:平成15年7月1日 Accepted July 1, 2003 * Department of Wildlife Biology, Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute (FFPRI), 1 Matsunosato, Tsukuba , Ibaraki 305-8687, Japan; e-mail : [email protected] 1) Department of Wildlife Biology, Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute (FFPRI) 2) Hokkaido Research Center, Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute (FFPRI)) 3) Tama Experimental Station, Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute (FFPRI) 272 KAWAJI N. et al.
