The settlement was constructed around a cemetery at the center accompanied by stone arrangements. Pit dwellings were concentrated in the eastern and western parts of the settlement, some of which had soil-made roofs. This site is important for understanding the layout of settlements and the structure of pit dwellings during the Jomon period. ACG08-P04 Japan Geoscience Union Meeting 2016 Estimation of total river flux from Japanese basins to Pacific ocean and its numerical prediction using cell distributed runoff model *Josko Troselj1, Toshiharu Sasaki1, Yosuke Yamashiki2, Takahiro Sayama3, Kaoru Takara3 1.Kyoto University, Graduate School of Engineering, Department of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering, 2.Kyoto University, Graduate School of Advanced Integrated Studies in Human Survivability, 3.Kyoto University, Disaster Prevention Research Institute 1. Introduction The demand for having simulated freshwater outflow data on the river mouths is especially conspicuous in coastal modeling where fluvial influence often makes big difference in results and in climatological modeling where fluvial influence is needed to join the oceanographic, meteorology and hydrology cycle into bigger comprehensive closed cycle to be used for more accurate climatological models. Coastal and climatological models do not usually use freshwater outflow data from river's estuaries because they either neglect the data as insignificant or have difficulties to implement these data into their models. 2. Objective and motivation The main objective of the study is to create complete set of river outflow data from Japanese basins to western Pacific ocean, in order that the data can be used in bigger and more complex coastal and climatological models, so that these models can develop more precise calculations and expand its purposes to wider range. Secondary objective of the study is to predict sediment runoff at the catchment scale near river mouth, in order that it can be used in river basin management for sediment related disaster risk reduction. River discharge data likely represent the most accurate quantitative information about the global terrestrial water cycle, but this information has not been uniformly adopted in Earth Systems studies, such as GCMs or terrestrial productivity models (Fekete et al., 2002).

  • Northern Jomon Culture Seen from the World 1/8
Northern Jomon culture seen from the world 1/8 Northern Jomon culture seen from the world Kazunori Takada (Director, Goshono Jomon Park ) J omon culture is a prehistoric culture that lasted for more than 10,000 years on the Japanese archipelago. The range of the culture is thought to have extended throughout almost all of the archipelago, from northern Hokkaido to southern Kagoshima, and then further, into Okinawa. However, the culture was not necessarily uniform, and distinctive regional characteristics have encouraged moves to understand Jomon as a regional cultural sphere. Among these regions, a unique cultural area was formed by the southern part of Hokkaido and the northern part of Tokhoku, the north-eastern part of Japan, which are separated by the Tsugaru Strait. Currently, efforts are underway to secure UNESCO World Heritage Site designation for the Jomon culture of this region, as “Jomon Archaeological Sites in Hokkaido and Northern Tohoku.” The Goshono Jomon Park continues to hold lectures to encourage learning about Jomon culture in the north, and many researchers into archaeology, history, and cultural anthropology have given interesting lectures. This article contains one of those lectures, on how Jomon is seen from outside the Japanese archipelago. I would like to remove the frame of the Japanese archipelago, and to think with everyone, from a broader perspective, about the strong regional ties and longevity of the culture of “Jomon Archaeological Sites in Hokkaido and Northern Tohoku.” Northern Jomon culture seen from the world 2/8 The beginning of pottery and changes in the natural environment F ifteen thousand years ago, rapid warming reduced the number of large animals, and pottery began to appear for the first time, from Primorsky Krai in East Asia (Russian Far East) to various part of China and the Japanese archipelago.

  • 1 the 2010 Chilean and the 2011 Tohoku Tsunami Waves
THE 2010 CHILEAN AND THE 2011 TOHOKU TSUNAMI WAVES IMPACT TO RIVERS IN THE TOHOKU REGION, JAPAN Hitoshi Tanaka1 and Nguyen Xuan Tinh2 As a result when tsunami invades into river, it may not only a threat of damages to the banks but also cause the environmental problem such as inundation. Therefore, study of tsunami impacts to rivers becomes more important. The main objectives of this study are to investigate the tsunami wave propagation at different river morphologies based on real time measurements during the 2010 Chilean Tsunami and 2011 Tohoku Tsunami events. The aim is to learn empirically from the last extreme events tsunamis in order to suggest a better solution in terms of river and coastal management in the future. The analyzed results have been shown that the tsunami wave can be affected up to several tens kilometer upstream of a large river and the measured tsunami travel time inside the river is almost similar to the tsunami travel time calculated by using the long wave theory. Keywords: 2010 Chilean Tsunami; 2011 Tohoku Tsunami; river mouth; river upstream; tsunami wave impact INTRODUCTION There were two serious Chile and Great Tohoku Earthquakes, rating magnitude of 8.8 and 9.0, took place on February 27, 2010 and March 11, 2011 respectively caused great tsunami waves and devastating coastal areas of Chile and Japan. This study will mainly focus on the effects of these two tsunami events to the total 25 rivers in Tohoku Region of Japan. In order to achieve the objectives, an attempt is made to collect as many required data sets as possible for all studied rivers.
