Welcome to the 5th edition of Artisan Resource® at NY NOW®! The momentum of the Show continues to build from one edition to the next. With over 120 companies from 30 countries participating, the summer 2014 edition of Artisan Resource is the largest event since its launch in 2012. Increased global representation and an expanded exhibit floor are just some of the highlights. We invite you to come explore all the global artisanal production capabilities available to you, right here in New York City.
This summer we look forward to welcoming a record eight country pavilions as well as a large influx of new suppliers, with 70 new exhibitors, including a growing number of emerging companies making their New York debut through the Market Incubator Program. For more details on this wonderful partnership, see page 37.
Our expanded seminar line-up led by industry leaders is sure to please with topics ranging from designer-artisan partnerships to marketing culture-based artisan stories. And don’t forget about our opening-day welcome reception on Saturday, August 16th. Enjoy appetizers, wine and musical entertainment during extended shopping hours, from 6pm – 8pm.
We hope this directory will serve as a guide to explore the opportunities that await you by working with export ready artisans worldwide. As you walk the Show floor you will find a broad spectrum of products balancing between traditional and contemporary. Take the time to meet the artisans and hear their stories. Feel the soft alpaca fiber from Peru which has been beautifully crafted into home textiles, admire the work being done by Cambodian and Afghan silk producers, learn about the backstrap loom process of the Mayan culture, marvel at the work of metal artisans from India. It’s hard to leave not feeling inspired, renewed, and ready to dive into new partnerships with these artisans.
On behalf of Emerald Expositions and ByHand Consulting we thank you for your continued support. Your commitment to purchasing handmade, fair trade, eco- friendly, sustainable products helps to create jobs, empower women, increase incomes, and sustain ancient traditions.
Warm Regards,
Allison Garafalo Sales Manager [email protected]

Organized by the Office of Tunisian Handicraft
Tunisian handicraft is a product of more than three thousand years of history and an important multi-ethnic influx. This unique mixture of cultures made Tunisia, with its strategic geographical location in the Mediterranean, the core of some great civilizations and producer of beautiful handicraft collections. This heritage can be experienced first-hand in the variety of products selected for the August Show. Traditional and modern designs of furniture, textiles, baskets, mats, olive wood, and mosaics can all be found within the Tunisia Pavilion in booth 32012 at Pier 94. Behind every selected product there is a true story. These stories highlight not only the history of the product but also its impact on the artisans and their quality of life; they are stories about equality and dignity for all people. Each region has its own specialty created with care, love and quality.

People who work with their hands do not often make the headlines: their names and talents are almost never proclaimed in 24-point type. The products of their looms, kilns, forges, sewing needles, adzes, dye-pots and sandpapers, bring daily satisfaction to both hand and eye, but artisans themselves usually stay in the background.
Not at NY NOW®, the creators of Handmade® Global Design and Artisan Resource® at NY NOW. Since 1985, NY NOW has demonstrated its commitment to craftspeople around the world not just with floorspace and marketing muscle, but with results. NY NOW’s spotlight on the handmade world has brought opportunity and income to hundreds of thousands of skilled artisans – and insightful commerce to even greater numbers of wholesalers, retailers and consumers. 2014 is no exception, as many dozens of handmade booths at NY NOW will attest.
As part of spreading the word about today’s handmade world, Artisan Resource has sponsored twelve articles on www. handeyemagazine.com highlighting the work of participating artisans. Like the selection included in this directory, each article delves into the people, materials, processes, and cultures that make the show so inspiring. Visit us online or come to see us at the Show. We hope to see you there.

Manreet and Samraat Deol bring tactile, sensuous cast metal jewelry to NY NOW® for the first time with Manifest Design Not yet a year old, Manifest Design is the dream project of Manreet & Samraat Deol. After long stints in New York City and New Delhi working in the studios of renowned tabletop designers, Manreet decided to settle in Pondicherry to pursue her own passion for jewelry. Samraat was ready to leave the tech-giants he had worked with. The two siblings set out together to create a company focused on authentic, trans-cultural designs that would extend the metal-smithing traditions of India. We create timeless pieces that are thoughtfully handcrafted and possess a soul that transcends cultural boundaries. Their gorgeous handmade ornaments start with varied, eccentric inspirations - gnarled corals, sensuous vines, bold rock sculptures, even urban art. These diverse influences come together in a unique visual vocabulary. Manreet and Samraat intend the work to be “collected and shared as mementos that rekindle forgotten dreams.” A sense of touch adds an additional layer of intrigue and warmth. Manreet creates the original forms, which then pass into the hands of her collaborators at the forge. Their touch also creates subtle, often tender and very human, variations. Manreet comments about the process, “Each design begins as a clay sculpture that is then cast in reclaimed brass and aluminum. Sand casting is a time consuming process in which skilled craftsmen painstakingly create a new sand mold for each and every piece. Hot metal is hand poured into each one and allowed to cool before the sand mold is broken apart to reveal the piece. These one of a kind objects are then sanded and polished. But not too much: we celebrate the little dents and nicks as the signature of entirely handcrafted product.”

Art with Wayúu heart
According to an old Wayúu legend, the spider taught Wayúu women artisans how to weave stories to remember them and to hand down to their children. Attached to the legend there’s a saying among Wayúu women, “The woman who doesn’t know how to weave is no real woman.”
Real women weave and the results are extraordinary. Everyday items like blankets, mochila bags, and hammocks dazzle the eyes with colors and intricate motifs that are inspired by the hues, shapes and harmony of the desert. The Wayúu’s palette and sense of design is organic. It’s based on the play of light during the seasons; the explosion of color in sunrises and sunsets; geometric patterns—each with a sacred meaning—found in nature and in their daily surroundings.
“Wayúu textile traditions are handed down from the older generation down to the younger generation—typically from grandmothers to their granddaughters,” said Juanita Garcia, Business Development and Social Impact Assessor of Jalianaya Foundation. Yet, like many indigenous cultures, the young are seduced with the lure of modernization and better paying jobs in towns and cities.
In 2000, the Jalianaya Foundation came to life as the initiative of a group of Wayúu artisans to improve their quality of life for themselves and their families. The foundation works with weavers in 87 communities within the rural municipality of Manure y Uribia in Guajira, Colombia. The mission is to encourage the Wayúu people to keep their traditions alive. “Jalianaya works with more than 200 women in remote rural communities who live in dire conditions. Programs include instruction in weaving, supplying the women with yarn and buying the finished product. The program has helped to economically empower them to lead themselves and their families out of poverty,” said Garcia.
Jalianaya’s plans for the future are ambitious. The foundation wants to reach 2,000 Wayúu families in the region and expand their services to include more than just training and employment. Programs would include the basics of nutrition and wellness, providing literacy classes, and helping communities build and maintain infrastructures for clean and drinkable water. “In five years time, we envision to be part of a business world where enterprises empower the ethical labor behind the brand.”

48 artisanresourceny.com Emerging Trends
can be one of the scariest words “Trend” we hear in this industry, but knowing what trends are and how to use them can make a big difference in the market response to our collections. The thought of developing new products everytime someone spots a new trend in the marketplace can be overwhelming, especially for artisans whose techniques and materials may not offer a broad range of colors and textures or a fast turnaround time. But, it isn’t necessary for us to respond to every trend that comes along with new products. We can use trends to influence buyers and sell more products in a variety of ways in addition to product development. Understanding emerging trends is important so we can make informed decisions not only on new products, but also on how we present and market them. This season we have some exciting things happening in the trends world and we want to bring these emerging trends to your attention so you can better position your line to meet the needs of the buyer. Neutrals and Naturals are always classic. But there are new exciting combinations of black, white, beige, brown, and grey being seen throughout the market in everything from fashion to home. Groups like our cover company - Azizi Life (Booth 31036) paired these classic combinations with their traditional weaving and bold graphic designs. Bibi Hanum Precious Recycling uses components like silk sari threads, porcelain shards, bits of wood, indigo and denim to create new beautiful up-cycled goods and unique one-of- kind products. Red Sari (Booth 30015) illustrates this trend expertly with their unique blend of scarves created from antique saris felted with wool. Mixed Media offers a hearty partner to Precious Recycling with a more robust use of materials both repurposed and new. The juxtaposition of soft and hard, smooth and coarse, industrial and hand-made allows an artisan to present products which question the norm and illuminate the strengths of opposing forces. Groups like Conserve (Booth 31035) demonstrate this with their combinations of leather and felt and rubber and canvas. Functional can be found in most any collection. Buyers today are looking for simplicity and excess is passé. Functional items are in vogue as younger buyers are trying to limit their impact on the world. Rope (Booth 31037) and Tilonia (Booth 30013) offer beautiful collections of beautiful, and functional, hand woven and hand printed home textiles. Icons, Symbolism, and Narrative uses traditional imagery and technique in contemporary contexts to expand on cultural history and preserve the skills and fables of our ancestors. The central Asian ikats of Bibi Hanum (Booth 31033) showcase some of these traditions, along with the voodoo veve of the bead and iron work from Haiti promoted by ABN (Booth 30012). artisanresourceny.com 49 Shuttle Bus Schedule
