    Samenvatting Deze nota / dit voorstel geeft antwoord op de vraag van gemeenteraadslid P. Geelen (CDA) en de heer Bergers voor een passend ereteken voor korporaal A.C.H. Detrie, „de enige Maastrichtenaar die op 10 mei 1940 sneuvelde bij de verdediging van de Sint Servaasbrug.‟ Zij pleitten voor het vernoemen van een straat naar korporaal Detrie dan wel het realiseren van een plaquette. Na nader onderzoek heeft het college besloten om geen straatnaam naar de korporaal te vernoemen, maar de drie aan de Sint Servaasbrug aanwezige plaquettes te vervangen door twee nieuwe. Deze twee nieuwe plaquettes doen recht aan de stedelijke geschiedenis en zijn een gepast en Collegevoorstel blijvend eerbetoon aan alle militairen, die op 10 mei 1940 zijn gevallen bij de verdediging van de stad. Beslispunten 1. de drie huidige plaquettes aan de oostzijde van de Sint Servaasbrug, als eerbetoon aan de 47 militairen die op 10 mei vielen in Midden- en Zuid-Limburg, te vervangen door twee nieuwe gedenkplaten (zoals omgeschreven onder punt 3 van de toelichting); 2. akkoord te gaan met het concept-schrijven aan de heer P. Veel activiteiten en evenementen zijn stilgelegd, mensen werken thuis en overleggen zijn opgeschort. Dat geldt helaas ook voor de overleggen van onze werkgroep OBI 2025. Er stonden o.a. overleggen gepland met Staatsbosbeheer over wandelmogelijkheden in de nieuwe natuurgebieden, met de klankbordgroep van het Consortium Grensmaas en de werkgroep Recreatievijver. Toch heeft niet alles stilgelegen. We hebben gelukkig nog een groot aantal bomen en struiken kunnen planten langs de recreatievijver maar de actie Schone Maas hebben we helaas moeten afblazen. Jammer, aangezien er na de hoge waterstanden weer gigantisch veel troep is achtergebleven. Naast de coronacrisis hebben we in Itteren Borgharen ook te maken met een milieuramp. De hoeveelheden plastics die in de uiterwaarden achterblijven na hoogwater lijken alleen maar toe te nemen. Een zeer zorgelijke zaak waar wij komende tijd mee aan de slag zullen gaan. Ondanks alles zijn er toch nog een aantal positieve zaken te melden. In deze nieuwsbrief en op onze website is hier meer over te lezen. Bezoek hier onze website Liefhebbers van wandeltochten opgelet! In het Rivierpark Maasvallei, het grensoverschrijdend landschapspark aan beide oevers van de Maas tussen Thorn/ Kessenich en Borgharen/ Smeermaas, kun je binnenkort een Lange afstandswandeling lopen. Deze route met een lengte van maar liefst 132 km. verbindt de 11 gemeenten in de beide Limburgen en brengt je langs de mooiste landschappen. De Lange afstandswandelroute is een aanvulling op de reeds bestaande Maasroute, de fietsroute die de Maas over een afstand van 1050km volgt.

De hoogste afvoer sinds mensenheugenis werd gemeten, en deze calamiteit werd binnen twee weken alweer gevolgd door twee minder ernstige hoogwaters. Voor de getroffen bewoners was al spoedig duidelijk dat hun kerstdagen letterlijk in het water vielen. Ruim tienduizend inwoners van Limburg werden door het zeer hoge water gedwongen hun huis enkele dagen te verlaten. Buiten het menselijk leed was ook de materiële schade enorm. Een lichtpunt was dat er in Nederland geen doden zijn gevallen, dit in tegenstelling tot België, waar één slachtoffer viel te betreuren. Inmiddels hebben de mees1e getroffenen van de watersnood de draad van hun dagelijks leven weer opgepakt. Dit is mede te danken aan de hulpverlening van de zijde van de verschillende overheden, maar evengoed door 'ouderwetse' burenhulp. De bijstand van hulpdiensten van buiten de provincie Limburg en uit Duitsland heeft grote indruk gemaakt. Bovendien hebben zowel de overheid als particulieren hun financiële steen(tje) bijgedragen, zodanig dat zowel de getroffen burgers als het bedrijfsleven voor een belangrijk deel financieel tegemoet zijn gekomen.

Itteren and Borgharen are located in the Southern province of Zuid-Limburg. In 19780 they were incorporated into the internationally renowned city of Maastricht as districts. Both Itteren and Borgharen are small villages with a population of approximately 980 and 1810 respectively. Figure 1- Itteren and Borgharen While Borgharen and Itteren flood more frequently than other parts of the Netherlands, it is not as frequent as in the past and due to the newly built embankments, the frequency will most likely decrease even more. Although the Meuse floods are flashfloods in nature, coming down from the Ardennes with a steep gradient, the lead time is generally enough for joint efforts to put valuables upstairs and to move cars out of the way. An Itteren councilor said that even when the streets are flooded, it is no big deal if you can still wade through the water. The newly 2 engineered protective system may change that, though, as the possibility of a ‘bathtub effect’ arises. The last serious high-water situation was in January, 2011, when a few dozen special needs individuals were evacuated.
