United States Department of Agriculture Research, Education, and Economics Agricultural Research Service February 9, 2012 Dear Requestor: Enclosed is a copy of our apple or tart-cherry catalog and a disclaimer stating some of our conditions. This catalog contains a very diverse list of accessions including wild species, interspecific hybrids, heirloom cultivars, other rare cultivars and commonly available commercial cultivars. If you are not sure, there are websites that list availability such as: http://www.goodfruit.com/buyers. A general search for cultivar sources on Google can also be done. There is one excellent source that we use here when the question of commercial availability comes to us. This is an excellent book Fruit, Berry and Nut Inventory, Third edition: An Inventory of Nursery Catalogs Listing All Fruit, Berry and Nut Varieties by Kent Whealy lists many nurseries that carry not only common commercial material but also heirloom and rare cultivars published by http://www.seedsavers.org/. It is available on-line with a fourth edition in progress. If accessions are not available through commercial sources, we can provide scions/cuttings. When selecting your order, the following conditions apply: 1. Orders for dormant scions (limit 25) must be received by January 10 in order to ship by March 20. 2. • Apple Fruiting
Apple Fruiting ________________________________________________________________________ Spur and Semi-spur Apple Varieties – Over 1000 spur and semi-spur varieties listed. Apple trees that have fruit on spurs or semi-spurs are more dwarfing. They also require special pruning techniques. Tip and Partial-tip Apple Varieties – Over 350 varieties listed. Fruit are borne on the tip of the branches, and are weeping and require little to no pruning. ________________________________________________________________________ Apple Fruiting 1 12/8/06 SPUR-TYPE FRUITING APPLES FOR THE HOME ORCHARD For home orchardists there are several advantages in growing spur–type trees. As the name indicates, the fruit is borne on spurs. Spurs are slow growing leafy shoots and have a mixed terminal bud. A mixed terminal bud will produce shoot and flowers. In apples, spurs develop on two–year old shoots from axillary buds located at the base of each leaf. Axillary buds on a spur can give rise to shoots or new spurs. A branched spur system forms after several years when new spur form on old spurs. Spur–type strains are more dwarfing than the standard stain. When spur and standard strains were compared in Washington rootstock trials, the spurs were 25% smaller than standard stains. Spur–type apples have a growing and fruiting characteristic in which lateral (axillary) buds on two year old wood gives rise to a higher portion of spurs and fewer lateral shoots than occur with standard growth habits. This gives the tree a more open canopy and compact growth habit than standard trees. Research indicates that they have approximately half the canopy volume of standard strains.

  • Britain's Gymnasts Have Once Again Made History As the Men's Team of Max Whitlock, Louis Smith MBE, Kristian Thomas, Nile Wi
Britain’s gymnasts have once again made history as the men’s team of Max Whitlock, Louis Smith MBE, Kristian Thomas, Nile Wilson, Brinn Bevan and Daniel Purvis have taken silver at the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships at the Hydro Arena in Glasgow, our greatest ever artistic gymnastics World Championships team result. The GB men, who have never taken a world team medal, finished with 270.345, just 0.473 behind the newly crowned champions Japan (270.818) and 0.386 ahead of former world champions China (269.959). The silver medal was sealed with the last performances of the championships as the Hydro Arena awaited the placing’s, finally the scoreboard revealing the result and again confirming Great Britain’s standing amongst the best teams in world gymnastics The British men’s competition got off to great start with Louis Smith performing a difficult pommel routine under the pressure of opening the campaign scoring 15.333. Brinn Bevan’s huge shout of “come on” to the crowd showed how happy he was with his pommel with Max Whitlock last up produced an outstanding routine for our top score of 15.700. GB then moved to rings where Max Whitlock was again in good form scoring 14.400, the roar of the crowd indicated Scotsman Dan Purvis was next up and he was solid for 14.333, Nile Wilson the last up with an impressive 14.933. Brinn Bevan on vault showed no nerves in his first World Championships his double pike Tsukahara scoring 15.133. Max triple twisted to 15.033 and Kristian Thomas followed with a double piked Yurchenko vault with 15.333.

  • Albemarle Pippin Originated As Early As 1666 in New York & May Be
Albemarle Pippin Originated as early as 1666 in New York & may be even older. Its long & colorful history includes such characters as Benjamin Franklin & Queen Victoria. This variety became closely associated with Albemarle County Virginia where it was grown by Thomas Jefferson. “Pippin” means “seedling,” a common term among heritage varieties that refers to a variety’s beginning as a chance seedling, as opposed to being intentionally cultivated at first. Ben Davis In the late 1800s, Ben Davis was as popular as Red Delicious is today. It was the premier commercial apple of the time, being shipped & sold everywhere, and familiar to everyone. In the first decade of the 1800s, Kentucky resident Ben Davis planted a few apple trees that originated in either Virginia or North Carolina. Mr. Davis faded into obscurity, but his name became attached to the apple variety from his orchard. It gained enormous popularity and was planted throughout Kentucky and surrounding states. For about 40 years following the Civil War, Ben Davis was unrivaled as a market apple due to its hardiness in transport and its long shelf-life. Brushy Mountain Limbertwig Limbertwig is a family of apples consisting of at least 16 varieties. Pendant branches, as the name implies, is obviously a distinguishing characteristic, but some Limbertwig varieties don’t fit this pattern. Many claim that there is a distinctive Limbertwig taste common to all these varieties. The specific origin of Limbertwigs is lost. The earliest record dates to the late 1700s in Virginia. The Brushy Mountains, located in the North Carolina foothills of the Blue Ridge, has been a significant commercial apple region for many years.
