The Making of an Atomic Bomb

INTRODUCTORY ESSAY "DESTROYER OF WORLDS": THE MAKING OF AN ATOMIC BOMB At 5:29 a.m. (MST), the world’s first atomic bomb detonated in the New Mexican desert, releasing a level of destructive power unknown in the existence of humanity. Emitting as much energy as 21,000 tons of TNT and creating a fireball that measured roughly 2,000 feet in diameter, the first successful test of an atomic bomb, known as the Trinity Test, forever changed the history of the world. The road to Trinity may have begun before the start of World War II, but the war brought the creation of atomic weaponry to fruition. The harnessing of atomic energy may have come as a result of World War II, but it also helped bring the conflict to an end. 2020 INTERNATIONAL IMPACT REPORT NUCLEAR SCIENCE WEEK 2020 October 19-23, 2020 www.nuclearscienceweek.orG report issued February 28, 2021 About tHis Report: This report represents a compendium of the many hours of effort that has gone into a remarkable public outreach effort to disseminate current, accurate information about nuclear science, it’s impact on our world and its history during the observance of Nuclear 1 Science Week in 2020. As we know, the year of 2020 was deeply impacted by the pandemic of Covid-19 or Coronavirus. This devastating health crises has changed much of how public interaction occurs world-wide from planning meetings and events to receptions, seminars and classroom visitation and site tours. All of these changes required nimble planning and incredible ingenuity from the places where nuclear science is discussed and where work in the field takes place. Almost all of the events held in celebration and observance in 2020 were done remotely this past year to keep every participant safe and to limit direct interaction against the spread of Corona Virus. This International Impact Report has been developed to record the many places where Nuclear Science Week was observed, the groups that participated and organized these events; and the numbers of people, mostly members of the public, that participated. The year 2020 represents the eleventh anniversary of this event and annual time that NSW has been observed and the scale of it as a week for public discourse and learning continues to grow as evidenced by this report of impact. It is hoped that this report will be used to record interactions, entice larger groups to engage, to encourage more discussion, to transmit more knowledge and excite more students about nuclear science and related STEM fields as potential future career pathways. -

BUSH-CONANT FILE RELATING TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ATOMIC BOMB, 1940-1945 The Bush-Conant File, reproduced on the 14 rolls of this microfilm publication, M1392, documents the research and development of the atomic bomb from 1940 to 1945. These records were maintained in Dr. James B. Conant's office for himself and Dr. Vannevar Bush. Bush was director of the Office of Scientific Research and Development (OSRD, 1941-46), chairman of the National Defense Research Committee (NDRC) prior to the establishment of OSRD (1940-41), chairman of the Military Policy Committee (1942-45) and member of the Interim Committee (May-June 1945). During this period Conant served under Bush as chairman of the National Defense Research Committee of OSRD (1941-46), chairman of the S-1 Executive Committee (1942-43), alternate chairman of the Military Policy Committee (1942-45), scientific advisor to Maj. Gen. Leslie R. Groves (1943-45), and member of the Interim Committee (May-June 1945). The file, which consists primarily of letters, memorandums, and reports, is part of the Records of the Office of Scientific Research and Development, Record Group (RG) 227. The Bush-Conant File documents OSRD's role in promoting basic scientific research and development on nuclear fission before August 1942. In addition, the files document Bush and Conant's continuing roles, as chairman and alternate chairman of the Military Policy Committee, in overseeing the army's development of the atomic bomb during World War II and, as members of the short-lived Interim Committee, in advising on foreign policy and domestic legislation for the regulation of atomic energy immediately after the war.
