Olafur Eliasson Versailles 7 June - 30 october

Every time a season of contemporary at Versailles comes around, we once again experience the myst erious, exhilarating meeting of artist and site. Olafur Eliasson’s mind is in perpetual motion, but he is sp aring with his words and gest ures. His ideas are abundant and ever-ch anging, his act ions precise, measured. He st rode around the grounds of Versailles, fi nding insp iration here, only to abandon the idea, imagining a work there, later deciding the sp ot was not entirely suitable. He returned several times before deciding on the places that would hold his attention in the long term, st opping to examine a detail on a sculpture in a forgotten corner of a drawing room. He even

© Olafur Eliasson wanted to wander alone at night through the ch âteau, experiencing emotions and impressions which in themselves form a unique relationship with the inexhaust ible myst eries of the Versailles est ate.

Did he at times allow himself to be overwhelmed by the continuous sequence of images, which Curator build up into excess or accumulation ? If he did, he never seemed out of his depth. It is too easy to think that Scandinavian men are cold and unemotional. Olafur Eliasson admitted at the end of one Alfred Pacquement visit that even if the process were to come to an end there and then, without an exhibition being born from it, he would already have experienced something truly unique. However, he then Press contacts meticulously ch ose a few points which , from then on, would be his, and would be used to lead us along with him on his explorations, or take us further into our possession of these places. Catherine Pégard President of the public Est ablishment of the palace, museum and national est ate of Versailles

SINCE 2008 , the Palace of Versailles organizes each year an exhibition dedicated to a non French or a foreign artist . in 2008, in 2009, Takashi Murakami in 2010, in 2011, Joana Vasconcelos in 2012, Giuseppe Penone in 2013, Lee Ufan in 2014 and in 2015 : these all artist s have est ablished a dialogue between their works and the Palace and . Since 2013, Alfred Pacquement is curator of this exhibition. 7

Historically, the at Versailles was a place of const ant observation – of oneself and of others ; the st rict social norms of the time were enforced through a web of gazes. Th e itect ure of the palace served to heighten visibility, becoming a st unning inst rument of power held exclusively by the king. Today, however, we look at Versailles diff erently, and when I visit the site, I ask myself : how do you, the visitor, view this iconic site ? What does it do to you ? Have we all become king ?

The Versailles that I have been dreaming up is a place that empowers everyone. It invites visitors to take control of the authorship of their experience inst ead of simply consuming and being dazzled by the grandeur. It asks them to exercise their senses, to embrace the unexpect ed, to drift through the gardens, and to feel the take shape through their movement.

For my exhibition this summer, I am doing a series of subtle sp atial interventions inside the palace deploying mirrors and light, and in the gardens, I use fog and water to amplify the feelings of impermanence and transformation. Th e artworks liquefy the formal design of the gardens while reviving one of landscape arch itect André Le Nôtre’s original, unrealised visions : the placement of a waterfall along the axis of the Grand Canal. Th is waterfall reinvigorates the engineering ingenuity of the past . It is as const ruct ed as the court was, and I’ve left the const ruct ion open for all to see – a seemingly foreign element that expands the scope of human imagination.

Versailles and the American War of Independence 5 julY - 2 october, the battles gallery

The exhibition will reveal the importance of Franco-American relations towards the end of the Ancien Régime. During the reign of Louis XVI, the Palace of Versailles, the centre of French power and government, was a key location in the est ablishment of American independence and its recognition by the European powers. It was here that the fi rst act of American diplomacy was carried out.

Parties and entertainment in the Court of Versailles 29 novembER 2016 - 26 marCH 2017, Africa and Crimea Rooms

King Louis XIV was a political monarch who took "grand entertainment" to the height of magnificence, making Versailles a venue of parties and shows that were ever more grand, extraordinary and fantastical. An astute psychologist, he understood that "this society of pleasures, which gives members of the Court an honest familiarity with (the sovereign), touches and charms them more than can be said" (Louis XIV, Memoirs for the instruction of the Dauphin, 1661), and that this was necessary for the political framework he had instituted. There had to be plenty of entertainment for everyday life in the court. In the first instance it included all types of public shows, comedies, operas, concerts, fireworks and light displays, but there were also private performances in which Seigneurs and Ladies of the Court went on stage themselves. There was a large amount of gambling, leading to fortune or Curators ruin, and activities were held in which court members had to shine: hunting, dancing in balls and masked balls, pall-mall and real tennis. Versailles in tokyo Marie-antoinette 25 october 2016 - 26 february 2017, Tokyo, MORI ARTS CENTER GALLERY

Japan is most certainly the country, outside France, where the fi gure of Marie-Antoinette is most popular, notably thanks to the ch aract er imagined by Rieko Ikeda in her manga Th e Rose of Versailles. Th e Palace of Versailles and Nippon Television have joined forces to propose an exhibition of almost four months dedicated to this iconic fi gure in French hist ory.

Through a large number of works of art from the Versailles collect ions – paintings furnishings, objets d'art, drawings and engravings – as well as loans from other public and private collect ions in France and abroad, the exhibition will provide, for the very fi rst time in Japan, a wide-ranging evocation of the life of Marie- Antoinette, from her youth in Vienna through to her tragic end.

Portraits of the Queen and members of the royal family by the Court’s fi nest portrait artist s – and in particular François-Hubert Drouais, Louis Mich el Vanloo and Joseph Siff red Duplessis – will familiarise visitors with the people among whom Marie-Antoinette, queen of France. The Queen’s own tastes will also feature prominently in the exhibition. Assist ed by the royal administ ration of the Crown Inventory, Marie-Antoinette gathered some of the fi nest Curators craft smen around her, such as cabinet-maker Jean Henri Riesener, joiner Georges Jacob or bronze-maker Pierre-Philippe Th omire, to design the precious furnishings or object s for the Gwenola Firmin sumptuous, refi ned decor she liked to surround herself with. Th e variety of tableware designed by the Curator for 18th-century Sèvres Royal Porcelain Works are featured, and more particularly the “Japan” service insp ired by paintings at the National Museum of the Versailles Imari porcelain or the famous “Pearls and Cornfl ower” dinner service made for Trianon. and Trianon . During the Ancien régime the royal st ables were situated in the King's Small Stables and Great Stables, a pair of buildings built opposite the Palace of Versailles by Jules Hardouin-Mansart. Pearls of classic French arch itect ure, these two const ruct ions were designed to house the horses and coach es of the King and the Court as well as the thousand or so people who formed the Inst itution, including horsemen, drivers, black smiths, wheelwrights, saddlers, doct ors and even musicians.

At the time of the revolution hundreds of vehicles that once served the king and Court were sold and disp ersed, and then re-used during the War in the Vendée and to serve the needs of the revolutionary government. In 1837, when Louis-Philippe turned the Palace of Versailles into a museum dedicated to "All the glory of France", he re-assembled the collect ion of hist orical coach es.

Modifications to visit routes

The closure of the Queen's Apartments (see the Major Works sect ion on pg. 30) has led to the modifi cation of the route of the visit. Visitors will discover other rooms in the royal residence, but will nevertheless st ill see the Gallery of the Hist ory of the Palace, Louis XIV's rooms, the King's State Apartments, the and the King's Chambers at the st art of their visit. Th e Gallery of Great Battles, in the South Wing, also remains open.

After the King's Chambers the visit will lead to two rooms in the King's Inner Apartments which were rest ored in 2015: the Royal Table Room, furnished for the occasion, and the King's Guard Room. Visitors will then take the Queen's Staircase to continue their tour with the Ladies' Apartments belonging to the daughters of Louis XV, which were fully rest ored and refurnished in 2013.

In order not to deprive visitors of the most remarkable works from the Queen's Apartments, the curators at the Palace of Versailles have decided to disp lay them elsewhere: pieces of furniture, portraits and objets d'art continue to evoke life in the French Court and the fi gure of Queen Marie-Antoinette in Versailles in other rooms.

The King's First Antechamber (the royal Table Antechamber)

This room in the King's Inner Apartments was created in 1684 by Jules-Hardouin Mansart and rest ored in 2015. It is now furnished in a way that evokes its original funct ion: the place where Louis XIV dined at the "Royal Table", i.e. in public and surrounded by the royal family. Some of the furniture from the Queen's Royal Table Antech amber has been moved here, including an armch air and st ools, a tablecloth and serviettes from the 19th century, and plates by Robert-Joseph August e. Th e Grand Couvert room © Château de Versailles, D. Saulnier The royal Table Antechamber was also the place where royal subject s could come every Monday and place request s on a table covered in green velvet, behind which there was an empty armch air representing the King. Th is room contains the biggest fi replace in the Palace. Made with red restoration With marble, it is composed of a ch imney piece placed against a green Campan marble the support of back ground. 25 The Ladies' Apartments, the daughters of Louis XV

Situated on the ground floor in the central part of the palace, this sp ace originally contained the Bath Chambers of Louis XIV. For a while it belonged to Madame de Montesp an, and then during the reign of Louis XV it became 's apartment, who kept it until she died. Mesdames, Louis XV's six daughters, moved here in 1750. From 1769 to the end of the Ancien Régime, only Mesdames Adélaïde and Vict oire, who remained unmarried, lived here. Th e apartments were fully rest ored and refurnished in 2013.

Today, visitors will discover furniture here from the Queen's apartments. Th e ch airs, armch airs, a wing ch air and screen from the gilded cabinet by Georges Jacob the father have been placed in the private ch amber of Madame Adélaïde. From the Queen's Chambers, the pliant st ools by the Foliot family have been added to Madame Adélaïde's room and the two armch airs by Jean-Baptist e Tilliard the son have been placed in Madame Vict oire's ch ambers. Th e pliant st ools by Jacob- Desmalter from the Nobles' Room have also been placed in Madame Vict oire's room.

The Queen's Private Apartment, on the ground floor (Guided visits only)

Not considering her private chambers on the 1st floor as sufficient, and wishing to move closer to her ch ildren's apartments, in 1782 Marie-Antoinette began using a private apartment on the ground fl oor of the Palace. It contained three principal rooms: a ch amber, a book room and a bathroom. Today only the ch amber and the bathroom can be visited. Marie-Antoinette 's ch amber © Château de Versailles, C.Milet During the work in the Queen's apartments certain items of furniture, including some of those from Marie-Antoinette's room, have been moved into the Queen's ch amber on the ground fl oor, notably the jewellery cabinet by Ferdinand Sch werdfeger, the jewellery box by and the bust of Marie-Antoinette by Félix Lecomte. Th e screen by Jean-Baptist e Sené hase been placed in front of the fi replace made of Griotte marble with gilded bronze decoration, which is the only remaining feature from the original mural decoration.

The Captain of the Guard's Apartment (Guided visit only)

The important position of Captain of the Guards was held by four people, usually Dukes or French Peers, who exercised their role "quarterly" i.e. every three months in turn. Th e Captain of the Guards lived in this apartment, situated next to the Queen's Private Apartment, during the quarter he was in this position.

In this ground-fl oor apartment visitors will see multiple pieces of Th e Captain of the Guard's Apartment furniture and paintings from Marie-Antoinette's apartments, including a commode, desk, writing © Château de Versailles, C.Milet desk and corner cupboards by Jean-Henri Riesener, portraits by Louise Élisabeth Vigée-Lebrun, armch airs and ch airs by Georges Jacob the father, corner cupboards by Adam Weisweiler and crock ery from the Manufact ure de Sèvres.

Situated north-west of the Palace of Versailles, the Grand Trianon was built by Jules Hardouin-Mansart in 1687 and is without a doubt the most refi ned feature of the whole of the Versailles est ate. It was lived in by Princess Palatine, the Duke of Chartres, the Duch ess of Bourbon, the Princess of Conti, Peter the Great and the youngest son of Louis-Philippe. The Golden Children's Pool is situated on the west ern border of the Water Th eatre Grove, in the north of the park of Versailles. Arthus-Bertrand creates a collection of medallions for the Palace of Versailles

The Palace of Versailles has teamed up with Arthus-Bertrand to produce a collect ion of 17 medallions re-telling the hist ory of Versailles across the centuries.

The Palace of Versailles contains a large number of medallions which illust rate the hist ory of the location and its inhabitants across the centuries. To bring these test imonies of the past under the sp otlight, the Palace asked Arthus-Bertrand to delve into the royal numismatic arch ives. Th e company's workshops have produced a collect ion of medallions, some of which are identical to the royal series, while others are reinterpretations of ancient engravings. Th ey include three reproduct ions of portraits of Louis XIV at the age of 5, 22 and 46, which , alongside others, have been created based on the Medallions on the main events of the full reign of Louis the Great by Sir Anisson, Direct or of the royal printing house (1702). Medallion of the fi rst aerost at fl ight © Château de Versailles, D. Saulnier Th ey depict Louis XV and Marie Leszczynska, Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette, as well as famous events or places such as the Royal Chapel whose const ruct ion began in 1689, and the fi r st aerost at fl ight from Versailles in 1783. eTh collect ion is completed by three counters depict ing the Queen's House, Louis XV and Louis XVI.

The medallions and counters are made of bronze and stamped with a sp ecial hallmark which guarantees the origin and quality of French product ion. Each piece comes with a hist orical and tech nical description.
