But in repaying them one reenacts one’s initial plea- sures, remembering collegial conversations, insights gained, suggestions and criticism that pushed one’s thinking along or made one rethink an argument or pursue another direction in the archives. This book began during my year at the Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research on Women, Brown University, in 1988–89. Intending to pur- sue a very different research project, by the end of that year I had discarded it and embarked on what became this book. That year’s conversations with other fellows and our weekly seminars produced the intellectual transition that shaped this book. My continued conversations with Elizabeth Weed, then the Center’s Associate Director and now its Director, have been invaluable. During the years I worked on this book I taught at Barnard College. I want to thank most affectionately Natalie Boylen Kampen for her trust and support of my work over all those years, and for patiently prodding me to learn how to see visual texts and interpret them productively.As the reader will see, I have come to depend on visual material for many arguments in this book. In particular, Shakhsari’s sharp critique—that the book is complicit in the amnesia that erases same-sex practices and desires of women—calls for an entire supplementary project, the kind of Derridian supplementarity that I recognize unwinds the whole fabric of this manuscript one more time. At the end, I decided to let go of this book and begin a new project. In 1994–95 I was a fellow at the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study, where the Social Science faculty and fellows created a challenging and sup- portive intellectual atmosphere. Like many historians of gender, I owe a great deal to Joan Scott’s books and articles. But the year at the Institute also gave me a unique opportunity for conversations with her that have continued since then and have sustained my thinking. In 1995 Layla Diba invited me to contribute to a seminar at the Brook- lyn Museum she organized in preparation for an exhibition she curated with Maryam Ehtiar,Royal Persian Paintings:The Qajar Epoch, 1785–1925 (Brooklyn Museum, 23 October 1998 through 24 January 1999). Involve- ment in this project introduced me to the field of Qajar visual texts and led me ultimately to the central arguments of this book.     ARTA 2005.001 St John Simpson - The British Museum Making their mark: Foreign travellers at Persepolis The ruins at Persepolis continue to fascinate scholars not least through the perspective of the early European travellers’ accounts. Despite being the subject of considerable study, much still remains to be discovered about this early phase of the history of archaeology in Iran. The early published literature has not yet been exhausted; manuscripts, letters, drawings and sculptures continue to emerge from European collections, and a steady trickle of further discoveries can be predicted. One particularly rich avenue lies in further research into the personal histories of individuals who are known to have been resident in or travelling through Iran, particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries. These sources have value not only in what may pertain to the sites or antiquities, but they also add useful insights into the political and socio-economic situation within Iran during this period (Wright 1998; 1999; Simpson in press; forthcoming). The following paper offers some research possibilities by focusing on the evidence of the Achemenet janvier 2005 1 ARTA 2005.001 Fig. 1: Gate of All Nations graffiti left by some of these travellers to the site. Recurrent themes of the course include problems of state building in the context of domestic weaknesses and external pressure, ideas about reform and modernization, the impact of reform by command from above, the role of religion in politics, and major upheavals, such as the Constitutional Revolution of 1906, the oil nationalization crisis of 1951-1953, and the Islamic Revolution of 1978-1979. The specific topics and readings are listed below. The seminar meetings are structured on the basis of reading and discussion for each week’s topic. Its history dates back almost 5000 years. It is situated at a strategic juncture in the Middle East region of South West Asia. Evidence of man’s presence as far back as the Lower Palaeolithic period on the Iranian plateau has been found in the Kerman Shah Valley. And time and again in the course of this long history, Iran has found itself invaded and occupied by foreign powers. Some reference to Iranian history is therefore indispensable for a proper understanding of its subsequent development. The first major civilisation in what is now Iran was that of the Elamites, who might have settled in South Western Iran as early as 3000 B.C. In 1500 B.C. Aryan tribes began migrating to Iran from the Volga River north of the Caspian Sea and from Central Asia. Eventually two major tribes of Aryans, the Persian and Medes, settled in Iran. One group settled in the North West and founded the kingdom of Media. The other group lived in South Iran in an area that the Greeks later called Persis—from which the name Persia is derived.

    Cinematic Modernity Cosmopolitan Imaginaries in Twentieth Century Iran by Golbarg Rekabtalaei A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations University of Toronto © Copyright by Golbarg Rekabtalaei 2015 Cinematic Modernity Cosmopolitan Imaginaries in Twentieth Century Iran Golbarg Rekabtalaei Doctor of Philosophy Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations University of Toronto 2015 Abstract Cinematic Modernity explores the ―genesis amnesia‖ that informs the conventional scholarly accounts of Iranian cinema history. Critiquing a ―homogeneous historical time,‖ this dissertation investigates cinematic temporality autonomous from (and in relation to) political and social temporalities in modern Iran. Grounding the emergence of cinema in Iran within a previously neglected cosmopolitan urban social formation, it demonstrates how the intermingling of diverse Russian, Georgian, Armenian, Azerbaijani, French and British communities in interwar Tehran, facilitated the formation of a cosmopolitan cinematic culture in the early twentieth century. In the 1930s, such globally-informed and aspiring citizens took part in the making of a cinema that was simultaneously cosmopolitan and Persian-national, i.e. cosmo-national. This dissertation explains how in the late 1940s, after a decade long hiatus in Iranian feature-film productions—when cinemas were dominated by Russian, British, and German films—Iranian filmmakers and critics actualised their aspirations for a sovereign national cinema in the form a sustained commercial industry; this cinema staged the moral compromises of everyday life and negotiation of conflicting allegiances to families and social networks in a rapidly changing Iran—albeit in entertaining forms. While critiqued for ―imitating‖ European commercial films, this cinema—known as ―Film-Farsi‖ (Persian-Language)–was highly ii informed by lived experiences of Iranians and international commercial motion pictures.
