In the mid-nineteenth century, the burgeoning railway industry began to make an increasingly significant contribution. The military used railways because of their capacity to transport quickly and, less commonly, as a means for military action in their own right, such as armoured trains. The steam locomotive proved far superior to animal-drawn equipment in transporting troops and their military supplies, especially heavy weaponry. In Rails to the Front, historians Augustus J. Veenendaal and H. Roger Grant examine the crit- ical impact of railways in a series of conflicts worldwide, from the failed German revolutions VEENENDAAL & GRANT in the 1840s and Crimean War, right through to World Wars I and II and the Gulf War in the 1990s. Many of them are historical and are in poor condition due to long-term negligence. However, we have been witness to a change in this situation over the last few years. PKP S.A. is attempting to undertake actions aimed at protecting elements of cultural and sentimental value related to railways.     Back in East Prussia after 50 Years1 By Werner Gitt Fifty years after first fleeing and then finally being expelled from East Prussia2, we went back there for the first time. We visited the north part of East Prussia, in which Raineck where I was born also lies. The north part of what used to be East Prussia is now Rus- sian while south East Prussia is part of Poland. We spent 10 days in the north part, holding lectures. Before the trip we had anxiously wondered how we would be received in an area which had been a military no-go area for so long, where Westerners had been refused access. After the fall of the Soviet Union, even this door had swung open. In the ten days we were there, we experienced both the wonderful as well as the nega- tive. The results of fifty years of communism were devastating. The towns and villages of a once beautiful country have been completely destroyed. The people were not in much better condition; they lived their lives without hope and orientation. Karl Marx once said, “Practice is the criteria for truth.” At least he got that right. If anyone wants to ex- amine the practical effects of communism, there are plenty of examples to be found here. How would the people who live here now react to the gospel? Our first stop was in Palmnicken. 1. Palmnicken: Palmnicken used to be a beautiful spa town on the Samland coast of the Baltic Sea which is famous throughout the world for its amber.

While retaining its traditional significance in Russia’s defense doctrine, that region has come to be seen as a golden opportunity for establishment of closer mutually advantageous cooperation between Russia and the European Un- ion. Hardly any other Russian region has been hit as hard by the economic disruption as Kaliningrad. The geographical situation of the region meant that it was more highly exposed to the destabilising effects of post-communist economic transformation. Since then, a dramatic trade opening has occurred, and regional trade and production have undergone profound changes. Kaliningrad has experienced a major shift in its economic orientation towards the tertiary sector and a new industrial orientation based on its position as an intermediary in EU–Russian trade. In short, that is what this report is about: the present and future economic development of this Russian enclave during its integration into the world economy, its place in the international division of labour and in the Russian–EU economic interface.

Notes for MICHAL MACIEJEWSKI (MACIONES) ~: Aldona Druseika ([email protected]) wrote "Maciejiewski name is very popular here and we found many files with the same name. But in exact place as Pilviskiai and exact date 1830-... nothing. As you know already many files are completely destroyed, left files are in a very bad quality which we looked over all very carefully.... "We went directly to the place- Pilviskiai. First we visited church and meet a priest. He gave to us a registration book, where we found several Macijiewski, unfortunately their book is from 1930-... Nothing else left as to meet directly Macijiewski and talk, but as priest told every street has Macijiewski family and who knows which has a direct connection with our researching family... In contrary to American people many Lithanian people has not interest in their ancestors or family genealogical tree. So to find exact relatives would be very difficult..." Michal and his family appear to have changed their surname from Maciones to Maciejewski, a common practice, when they moved to Warsaw from that part of nineteenth century Poland-Russia which became southern Lithuania in the twentieth century. I've been told by sources in Poland that the two names are translations of one another. Michal's daughter Adela's church marriage record indicates that he was a railway officer at the time of her marriage in 1882 (at which time both were still using Maciones as their surname) [correspondence with Jadwiga Weralska ([email protected]), 9 March 2000 - JTS].
