Lots of changes this year with the Detroit Blue Society (DBS). It is going to be a great year for the Blues in the ―D‖ and we want our members to be a part of it. We have a new webmaster, read about him on page 6. William Toll aka Sweet Willie Tea is redesign- ing and you will see a new and improved website. Any input or advice on whatever else you want to see on our website – let the man know at William.toll@detroitblues society.org. The editor will always listen to her members, you can email me or talk to me when you see me out and about the ―D‖. My DBS email address is listed to the left and if you are a Facebook friend you can always message me (―inbox‖ me as I say). The DBS does a lot of things behind the scenes and after a year‘s work Alberta Adams‘ headstone is ready to be placed graveside. Peace Alberta. Blues Cruise this year is going to have everyone daaannnccciiinnnggg! Wait ‗til you hear who the bands are! I think we should have a cruise June, July and August, but that‘s just me. What do you think?! The DBS also wants to start a Detroit Blues Festival – I‘m in and I want to be on the board for that one. More summer fun – the Eastport Blues Festival and The Tawas Blues by the Bay Festival. I attended both last summer and loved them and encourage everyone to get a caravan and go! Tim Cheeks (Eastport Blues-Sanilac) is working hard on making 2016 (the 3rd year) even better than last year. I will keep everyone informed. Again we want our members to be heard – a once a month Blues Fest on Belle Isle is something I would like to see, just sayin‘. And don‘t forget the Terry Thunder Walk this summer – now that would be a great fundraiser! I hope everyone had a happy, safe and healthy holiday. See you around!

4 Support the Blues

Tuesday, 11/10/15 – The Tuesday night blues series at the Plymouth-Ann Arbor Elks Lodge has been underway for over two years now and continues to garner strong support. This month featured Erich Goebel & the Flying Crowbars. Guitarist/ vocalist Erich Goebel is one of the most popular and skilled musicians in our area. Roger Noonan was on bass along with drummer Darryl Pierce, Joe LaBeau on sax and harmonica man Mugs Benedict. The music could be described as hot blues and the fans were having a ball. The large dance floor was filled all night. Goebel is a very versatile guitarist and his music always leaves the fans wanting more. It was another fun filled night at the series billed as ―Blues at the Elks‖. These early Tuesday night are very popular.

Wednesday, 11/18/15 – A flavor of New Orleans came to the Southfield Library this evening. Monsieur Guillaume & His Zydeco Hepcats brought the spirit and music of that delta city to the fans at the library and did so in grand style. Fans in Detroit seldom get to hear this Zydeco music and it was a real treat for those fortunate enough to witness it this night. The band mates were Monsieur Guillaume (Bill Harrison) on accordion and vocals, Perez Morris (rub board/vocals), Erich Goebel (guitar/vocals), (bass), Dr. Dave Watson (congas), Ziggy Ziegeler (drums) and Joe LaBeau (tenor and baritone sax). These guys had the library jumping for sure. Series producer Don McGhee provided red beans and rice, corn bread and chicken Creole much to the delight of those in attendance. Monsieur Guillaume with The Zydeco Hepcats

Thursday, 11/19/15 – Little Arthur Anderson has a nice jam session going each Thursday evening at the Toy Box Bar & Grill in Detroit. Spider stopped by this night to enjoy the music. Harmonica man and vocalist Little Arthur led everything his blues with the passion of a man who has lived them. Bass man Buster Wylie added some lead vocals as did drummer Perez Morris and guitarist Nick Tabarias. These four seasoned musicians make up a tight blues group and were most entertaining. Papa Lee was waiting for a turn on stage as was Howard Dombroski and others. Spider missed them as he had to depart early. Drop by on Thursday night for some serious blues on the west side. Little Arthur Bass Man at the Toy Box Buster Wylie

Saturday, 11/21/15 – The long running and highly popular Detroit Blues Heritage Series is held four times each year at the historic Scarab Club in Detroit. This is a Detroit Blues Soci- ety event. This time it paid tribute to the memory and career of Thomas “Little Junior” Can- naday. His wife Lee and son Thomas Cannaday III were there along with other relatives. In the not too distant past Cannaday appeared on a regular basis with The Ben Moore Blues Express. That band was there to honor him. Band mates were Ben Moore (vocals/bass), Clarence Walton (guitar), James Cheney (tenor sax), Bo Johnson (keys) and Rick Gould (drums/vocals). Past Detroit Blues Society president and foun- der of the series Ed Schenk was emcee and provided tasty food of- ferings during the break. Papa Lee, a Detroit blues legend in his own Ben Moore at the Scarab Club right, joined in and sang a few . Photos of Cannaday by Don McGhee were on display and several were raffled off. One winner Blues Guitarist donated the photo she won of Little Junior to his son, a very nice gesture. Clarence Walton Get out and see a Live Show 5

Saturday, 11/28/15 - Johnny “Yard Dog” Jones departed this world back in September. He lived in Detroit for many years before moving to . His nationally acclaimed Ain’t Gonna Worry made him a national blues star. Steve Sanchez of Blues Factory Records recorded Yard Dog and many other blues stars resulting in classic, must have, album releases. Sanchez put together a tribute at Norm‘s Field of Dreams in Troy to honor the memory of Yard Dog. The many friends and fans literally packed the place. Taking a turn on stage were Harmonica Shah, Pete Berg, Bobby East, Glenn James, Angelo Willis, Billy Davis, Dan Hiveley, Mike Kissick, Chris Rumel, Clarence Walton, Reverend Mark Falconberry, Jeff Grand, Carl Caballero and others. Light Show Bob brought the large photo of Yard Dog that hung for many years at the old Attic Bar. It was a fine show of respect for a hero of Detroit blues, Johnny ―Yard Dog‖ Jones.

Tuesday, 12/08/15 – The Kenny Parker Band appeared at the Plymouth-Ann Arbor Elks Lodge for an early night concert this eve- ning. Guitarist Kenny Parker paid his dues in the early days backing The Butler Twins and Mr. Bo Collins. His brand of the blues is truly authentic. Joining Parker on stage were Mike Marshall (bass), Dan Devins (harmonica/vocals), Dave Marcaccio (drums), and Leonard Moon (keys). In the second set Detroit guitar legend Jim McCarty added his special talent to the fun. Parker and McCarty are close friends and they compliment each other nicely on stage. About 200 fans jammed the room and dance floor. This concert series on the second Tuesday night each month is a big hit with the fans.

Saturday, 11/07/15 – One of the most important blues radio stations in our area is WHFR-FM in Dearborn. A benefit for the listener supported independent radio station was held this evening at Whiskey Bar (formerly known as Halligan’s) in Dearborn Heights. Donating their time and talent was Danny Kroha, The Dale Robertson Band, Big Al’s Blues Crew w/ Ivory Darnell and Tosha Owens. It was a special treat seeing seven year old “Little” Michael on harmonica and vocals. We had a great burger at the place and were treated to outstanding music. Jo Ann Korczynska handled the emcee duties and the WHFR crew was there to keep things running smoothly.

Closing: Detroit area fans of live blues are very fortunate having so many talented musicians and venues willing to display them. However we have lost so many blues stars in recent years and it should remind the fans to get out and support their favorite blues men and women while they still can. Please do not catch yourself regretting missed gigs after hearing that the musician is no longer with us. Wolfgang Spider 6 Introduction to our Flint and Tri-City Contacts William Toll a.k.a Sweet Willie Tea

I began playing guitar as a teenager and in the 1980's released one record with the punk rock band "Toll". In the 90's I was front man for the blues/rock show band "Cidy Zoo". Our "Something for Everyone" release, included the single "Talk Louder", the classical crossover instrumental "25 Strings", and "Buick City Blues". All three re- ceived airplay with "Talk Louder" eventually charting at #15 on the AAA charts. I have recently released two as Sweet Willie Tea. An collection with my band, The Tea Bones titled "Down On The Floor" and a solo one-man-band effort in the tradition of Dr. Ross the Harmonica Boss titled "Unsweetened, No Lemon." I won the Canada South Blues Challenge and was a semi-finalist in Memphis at The 2011 International Blues Challenge, and I have won the Detroit Blues Society Blues Challenge twice and was a semi-finalist in Memphis at The 2013 International Blues Challenge. I have shared the stage with acts as diverse as Styx, Ten Years After, Canned Heat, Roger Miller, Rev. Peyton‘s Big Damn Band, Larry McCray, Steven Page (Bare Naked Ladies), and many more in clubs and at festivals. I currently perform nearly 200 shows yearly and have been a regular feature at the legendary Bert's in Detroit's Eastern Market. In 1986 I founded Fine Line Design, a commercial advertising and design firm that grew to employ five staffers and specialized in retail center (shopping mall) marketing with clients in four states. In recent years as music has dominated my time, I have "downsized" the company and now work primarily as a graphic and web design consultant under that same name. I served as President of the Board of Directors of Buckham Alley Theatre, an eighty seat non-profit theatre in Flint, MI for nearly twenty years and oversaw all aspects of the theatre's business including; advertising, grants, member- ship, and sound and lighting design. I have been fortunate to have been trained in the Second City method of improvi- sational comedy by SC alumnus Jonathon Round and to have served as Director of the Back Alley Players Comedy Improv Troupe during the years that followed. I am currently a member of the Detroit Blues Society and look forward to assisting the mission of the Society in any way that I can. The Flint and Genesee County area has several great venues and a long tradition of live blues music. Some of the nearby clubs that directly support the Detroit Blues Society are ―Beale Street Smokehouse‖ and ―50 Sips‖ in Fenton, and ―Slo‘ Bones Smokehaus‖ in Frankenmuth.
