What LETTERS actually happened was that Jack Tracy, then editor of Down Beat, decided the magazine needed some humor and cre• ated Out of My Head by George Crater, which he wrote himself. After several issues, he welcomed contributions from the staff, and Don Gold and I began. to contribute regularly. After Jack left, I inherited Crater's column and wrote it, with occasional contributions from Don and Jack Tynan, until I found that the well was running dry. Don and I wrote it some more and then Crater sort of passed from the scene, much like last year's favorite soloist. One other thing: I think Bill Crow will be delighted to learn that the picture of Billie Holiday he so admired on the cover of the Decca Billie Holiday memo• rial album was taken by Tony Scott. GREENE, KEVIN D., Ph.D. “Just a Dream”: Community, Identity, and the Blues of Big Bill Broonzy. (2011) Directed by Dr. Benjamin Filene. 332 pgs This dissertation investigates the development of African American identity and blues culture in the United States and Europe from the 1920s to the 1950s through an examination of the life of one of the blues’ greatest artists. Across his career, Big Bill Broonzy negotiated identities and formed communities through exchanges with and among his African American, white American, and European audiences. Each respective group held its own ideas about what the blues, its performers, and the communities they built meant to American and European culture. This study argues that Broonzy negotiated a successful and lengthy career by navigating each groups’ cultural expectations through a process that continually transformed his musical and professional identity. Chapter 1 traces Broonzy’s negotiation of black Chicago. It explores how he created his new identity and contributed to the flowering of Chicago’s blues community by navigating the emerging racial, social, and economic terrain of the city. Chapter 2 considers Broonzy’s music career from the early twentieth century to the early 1950s and argues that his evolution as a musician—his lifelong transition from country fiddler to solo male blues artist to black pop artist to American folk revivalist and European jazz hero—provides a fascinating lens through which to view how twentieth century African American artists faced opportunities—and pressures—to reshape their identities. Chapter 3 extends this examination of Broonzy’s career from 1951 until his death in 1957, a period in which he achieved newfound fame among folklorists in the United States and jazz and blues aficionados in Europe. -

Hopefully, you will find a combination of indepth reviews as well as great prices for purchasing albums, cassettes, compact discs, videos, books. This first issue is to give you a taste of things to come. We do not intend to be a source for ALL blues albums. There are just too many available. But rather we will offer the cream of the crop and keep you abreast of new and exciting releases. Our initial complete listing has over 500 albums. We have highlighted various artists and subjects in the Review and these articles should give you information and a feel for each album. We have gathered some of the finest writers in blues music to contribute their ideas and insights. Chris Smith, Neil Slaven and Ray Templeton are three of the most respected names in blues critique. After each introductory paragraph to a subject you will find the author’s name. He has written all the reviews in that area unless another writer’s name is included. Our prices are the lowest available especially when taking advantage of our SPECIAL OFFER. You can choose ANY four albums or cassettes and purchase a fifth for $1.95. A similar offer applies to compact discs but in this case the fifth CD would cost $3.95. Darkest Night Marks the Debut Duo CD by Two Internationally Recognized Blues Artists, Christian Dozzler & Michael Van Merwyk
Darkest Night marks the debut duo CD by two internationally recognized blues artists, Christian Dozzler & Michael van Merwyk. It takes a special kind of talent for a musician from the German-speaking part of the world to be accepted and appreciated in the country that gave birth to the blues. Christian Dozzler and Michael van Merwyk have each accomplished that rare feat – until now, independently of one another. In 2012, during a chance meeting in Memphis, the two Europeans (who originally met during the making of Larry Garner‘s Embarassment to the Blues) hatched the idea for a new acoustic duo project. Now, two years later and following a successful European tour, Darkest Night arrives, demonstrating the consummate musicality one has come to expect from these two world-class blues practitioners. Vienna native Christian Dozzler, who now lives in Dallas, TX, is a heralded piano player who also includes harp and accordion in his instrumental arsenal. He‘s contributed to dozens of recordings over the past 30 years, including albums by his own Mojo Blues Band and Christian Dozzler‘s Blues Wave, as well as collaborations with Hans Theessink, Magic Slim and countless others. In 2008, he was nominated for a Blues Critic Award (US) as Best Blues Pianist. His partner, German multi-instrumentalist Michael van Merwyk, spent hundreds of nights paying his dues close to home before storming onto the international stage. His road has recently carried him from Paris to Moscow and into the USA. In 2013, his band Bluesoul journeyed to Memphis and took home second prize at the International Blues Challenge – the highest finish ever for a non-American act. -
