All over the world, the naturalistic restoration of abandoned quarry areas represents a real challenge because of the very adverse initial site conditions for plant species colonization. In order to identify the best restoration practices, the present thesis considered, as a case study, the “Botticino extractive basin” (Lombardy, Italy), that is today the second greatest Italian extractive basin and it is famous worldwide for the limestone extraction. In particular, the thesis proposes a multidisciplinary approach based on the study of the local vegetation dynamics, laboratory tests, plant selection for restoration and field experiments to test different restoration techniques. Methods. Spontaneous vegetation dynamics over the whole extractive basin was studied by an ecological approach through 108 plots, that were carried out on surfaces whose “disused time” from quarry abandonment was known; data were analysed by cluster analysis and Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) and compared to the available data on grassland and woodlands related to the study area. We identified successional phases according to the trend of the most common species whose cover significantly increases or decreases with time. -

ROSALIA Handbooks ROSALIA Handbooks Practical Experiences in Invasive Alien Plant Control Invasive plant species pose major agricultural, silvicultural, human health and ecological problems worldwide, and are considered the most signifi cant threat for nature conservation. Species invading natural areas in Hungary have been described by a number of books published in the Practical Experiences in Invasive Alien Plant Control last few years. A great amount of experience has been gathered about the control of these species in some areas, which we can read about in an increasing number of articles; however, no book has been published with regards to the whole country. Invasions affecting larger areas require high energy and cost input, and the effectiveness and successfulness of control can be infl uenced by a number of factors. The development of effective, widely applicable control and eradication technologies is preceded by experiments and examinations which are based on a lot of practical experience and often loaded with negative experiences. National park directorates, forest and agricultural managers and NGOs in many parts of Hungary are combatting the spread of invasive species; however, the exchange of information and conclusion of experiences among the managing bodies is indispensable. The aim of the present volume is to facilitate this by summarizing experiences and the methods applied in practice; which, we hope, will enable us to successfully stop the further spread of invasive plant species and effectively protect our natural values. However, also in this group one can find invasive species. The paper include list of more than twenty taxons, spreading in new countries and even invading natural plant communities. European Epipactis helleborine occurs in a variety of anthropogenic habitats and broad- leaved forests in Eastern part of Northern America. In western Europe, on pine and spruce plantations, boreal orchids Goodyera repens and Listera cordata are spreading. In tropical zone most successful invaders are African species: Oeceoclades maculata in Southern and Central America and Monadenia bracteata in Western and Southern Australia. Some orchids, commonly cultivated, escape in two geographical regions, e.g. Epidendrum o'brienianum in Eastern Australia and Hawaii Islands. Most rich in naturalised orchids are Central America and Hawaii Islands. Common characters of many invading orchids are: - quick development (Oeceoclades maculata 1 year from seed to flower in favourable conditions!) - autogamy - apomixis - wide ecological amplitudes - broad natural distribution In most cases, intentional human activity (cultivation) was very important factor for further successful spreading. Unintentional activity (transformation of habitats, accidental introductions) seems to be of similar importance. This phenomenon can be more common, particularly in tropical countries, where orchid flora is rich, and conditions for cultivation more favourable. -

Roadside verges in the Netherlands span approximately 80,000 km and are often covered with semi-natural grasslands. As such, they also provide a suitable habitat for many insects, but this has received little attention so far. We investigated the effects of different management treatments on flower-visiting insects. We studied flower visitation in a 3 years old experimental set-up with five mowing treatments each replicated five times. Management types were: no management and mowing once or twice per year with and without the removal of hay, representing common forms of management and neglect. During an entire growing season, both flowers (number of species and inflorescences) as well as insects (total abundance and actual flower visits) were investigated. Mowing twice per year with removal of hay showed highest values for all measured variables and this effect persisted throughout the growing season. The early summer cut proved to be very important for insect feeding opportunities, due to the re-flowering of plants later in the growing season. Flower abundance showed high correlations with both plant species richness and the number of insect visits. -
