Taipei: Taida chuban zhongxin, 2018. 580 pp. ISBN: 9789863503088. In 1637, the Manchu-ruled Great Qing Country (Manchu Daicing gurun, Ch. Da Qing guo 大清國 ), founded in 1636, invaded and conquered its neighboring country, the Chosŏn kingdom of Korea. After Chosŏn then changed from being a tributary state of the Ming dynasty of China (1368–1644), a bilateral relationship officially established in 1401, to a tributary state of the Great Qing. The relationship between the Qing and Chosŏn lasted for 258 years until it was terminated by the Sino-Japanese Treaty of Shimonoseki in 1895. Within the hierarchical Sinocentric framework, to which scholars generally refer in English as the “tributary system,” Koreans had regarded Chosŏn as “Little China” (Xiao Zhonghua 小中華 ) since the Ming period and treated the Jurchens (who changed their name to “Manchu” in the early 1630s) in Manchuria as barbarians. The Sinocentric framework determined that the political legitimacy of Chosŏn, in particular the kingship, came from the imperial acknowledgment by the Chinese court conspicuously represented by the Chinese emperor’s investiture of the Korean king. -

Becoming Taiwanese: Negotiating Language, Culture and Identity Ying-Chuan Chen Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a doctoral degree in Education Society, Culture, and Literacies Concentration Faculty of Education University of Ottawa © Ying-Chuan Chen, Ottawa, Canada, 2013 Abstract Between 1945 and 1987, as part of its efforts to impose a Chinese identity on native-born Taiwanese and to establish and maintain hegemony, Chiang Kai-shek‘s Kuomintang (KMT) government pursued a unilingual, Mandarin-only policy in education. This thesis studies the changing meaning of ―becoming Taiwanese‖ by examining the school experiences of four generations of Taiyu speakers who went to school during the Mandarin-only era: 1) those who also went to school under the Japanese; 2) those who went to school before 1949 when Taiwan was part of KMT-controlled China; 3) those who went to school during the 1950s at the height of the implementation of KMT rule; and, 4) those who went to school when Mandarin had become the dominant language. Two data types, interviews and public documents, are analyzed using two research methods, focus group interviews as the primary one, and document analysis as the secondary one. This research found that there is no direct relationship between how people negotiated language, hegemony and Taiwanese identity. First, as KMT hegemony became more secure, people‘s links to their home language became weaker, so their view of Taiwanese identity as defined by Taiyu changed. Second, as exposure to hegemonic forces deepened over time, people were less able to find cultural spaces that allowed escape from hegemonic influences, and this, along with other life-course factors such as occupation, had an impact on their contestations of language and identity. -

religions Article Thirty Years of Mission in Taiwan: The Case of Presbyterian Missionary George Leslie Mackay Magdaléna Rychetská Asia Studies Centre, Department of Chinese Studies, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University, 602 00 Brno, Czech Republic; [email protected] Abstract: The aims of this paper are to analyze the missionary endeavors of the first Canadian Presbyterian missionary in Taiwan, George Leslie Mackay (1844–1901), as described in From Far Formosa: The Islands, Its People and Missions, and to explore how Christian theology was established among and adapted to the Taiwanese people: the approaches that Mackay used and the missionary strategies that he implemented, as well as the difficulties that he faced. Given that Mackay’s missionary strategy was clearly highly successful—within 30 years, he had built 60 churches and made approximately 2000 converts—the question of how he achieved these results is certainly worth considering. Furthermore, from the outset, Mackay was perceived and received very positively in Taiwan and is considered something of a folk hero in the country even today. Curriculum and National Identity: Evidence from the 1997 Curriculum Reform in Taiwan Wei-Lin Chen,* Ming-Jen Lin,† Tzu-Ting Yang‡ November 4, 2018 Abstract This paper examines the causal effect of textbook content on individuals’ national iden- tity, exploiting a curriculum reform that introduced a new perspective on Taiwan’s history for students entering junior high school after September 1997. Using a repeated nationally representative survey and a regression discontinuity design, we show that students exposed to the new textbooks were more likely to consider themselves Taiwanese. The effect is greater for academic track students and those living in neighborhoods where less people hold the Taiwanese identity. As a result, state leaders are incentivized to use the education system as an instrument for cultivating national identity —an essential step toward nation building. Empirical evidence has shown that, in the past 150 years, investments in mass education by governments have appeared in response to military threats, when patriotic people are required to prepare for future wars (Aghion et al., 2018). The causal effect underlying the intuition, and the transmission mechanism behind the effect of ed- ucation on national identity formation, however, lack detailed scrutiny. National identity trends in society and cohort effects pose challenges to the identification of educational content effects. -

Mair. The purpose of the series is to make available to specialists and the interested public the results of research that, because of its unconventional or controversial nature, might otherwise go unpublished. The editor actively encourages younger, not yet well established, scholars and independent authors to submit manuscripts for consideration. Contributions in any of the major scholarly languages of the world, including Romanized Modern Standard Mandarin (MSM) and Japanese, are acceptable. In special circumstances, papers written in one of the Sinitic topolects (fangyan) may be considered for publication. Although the chief focus of Sino-Platonic Papers is on the intercultural relations of China with other peoples, challenging and creative studies on a wide variety of philological subjects will be entertained. This series is not the place for safe, sober, and stodgy presentations. Sino-Platonic Papers prefers lively work that, while taking reasonable risks to advance the field, capitalizes on brilliant new insights into the development of civilization. The only style-sheet we honor is that of consistency. Where possible, we prefer the usages of the Journal of Asian Studies. Sinographs (hanzi, also called tetragraphs [fangkuaizi]) and other unusual symbols should be kept to an absolute minimum. Sino-Platonic Papers emphasizes substance over form. -

Author: Cai, Xiang-yu Title: Christianity and gender in South-East China : the chaozhou missions (1849-1949) Date: 2012-05-10 CHAPTER TWO: PROTESTANT AND CATHOLIC MISSIONS Introduction From the mid-nineteenth century, four missions—the Basel Mission, the English Presbyterian Mission (EPM), the American Baptist Mission (ABM) and Les Société des Missions Étrangères de Paris (MEP)—had a foothold in the Chaozhou region but were eventually expelled from mainland China in 1952. Since 1895, a dozen scholars have published about the history of their activities. In the first hundred years after 1895, nearly all of them were former missionaries or local church leaders.113 From the mid-1990s, historians who had no immediate connection with the missions such as Joseph Tse-Hei Lee, Hu Weiqing, and Lee Kam Keung (李金强) have stepped into this field.114 Joseph Tse-Hei Lee used the archives of the EPM and ABM as well as the British and American diplomatic sources and Chinese municipal archives to reconstruct the expansion of Protestantism into Chaozhou region in the second half of nineteenth century. He describes the transmission of Christianity in Chaozhou, a highly dynamic world with frequent migration and collective violence, which was totally different from more static, agrarian North China115. Hu Weiqing pioneered using the Chinese records of the English Presbyterian Synods at the Shantou Municipal Archives.116 His main interest was in the indigenization of Protestant Churches in Chaozhou. Lee Kam Keung has focused on the Swatow Protestant Churches in Hong Kong. -

Hong Tiangui Fu had been killed. Hong, divine leader of the once nascent kingdom and son of the Heavenly Kingdom’s founder, was asked to confess before his execution, making him one of the last figures to speak directly on behalf of the Qing’s most formidable opposition. The movement Hong had inherited was couched in anti-Manchu sentiment, pseudo-Marxist thought, and a distinct, unorthodox, Christian vision. -

Ogles Dean, College of Arts and Sciences 3 ABSTRACT ELLIOTT, BRIAN P., Ph.D., June 2011, English ―Messengers of Justice and of Wrath‖: The Captivity-Revenge Cycle in the American Frontier Romance Director of Dissertation: Paul C. Jones This project explores the central importance of captivity and revenge to four novels in the genre of frontier romance: Charles Brockden Brown‘s Edgar Huntly (1799), James Fenimore Cooper‘s Last of the Mohicans (1826), Catharine Maria Sedgwick‘s Hope Leslie (1827), and Robert Montgomery Bird‘s Nick of the Woods (1837). Although a fundamental plot aspect of nearly every work in the genre, the threat of captivity and the necessity of revenge are rarely approached as topics of inquiry, despite their deep connection to the structure and action of the texts. Perhaps most importantly, as critics Jeremy Engels and Greg Goodale note, these twin tropes serve as a way of unifying disparate social groups and creating order; in essence, such depictions function as a form of what Michel Foucault terms ―governmentality,‖ logics of control that originate from non-governmental sources but promote systems of governance.
