  • The Story of MIT-Fablab Norway: Community Embedding of Peer Production
Journal of Peer Production ISSN: 2213-5316 http://peerproduction.net The Story of MIT-Fablab Norway: Community Embedding of Peer Production Cindy Kohtala and Camille Bosqué Abstract: MIT-Fablab Norway was one of the first Fab Labs ever established, in northern Norway in 2002. Despite this auspicious beginning to a network that is rapidly growing, surprisingly little has been written about the genesis of the network or the Fab Lab itself. We therefore aim to contribute to this knowledge gap with a narrative account of our independent ethnographic research visits to the Lab. We combine our researcher perspectives, which are informed by, on the one hand, Aesthetics and a phenomenological understanding and, on the other, Science and Technology Studies, with Design Research bridging both. Our account aims to richly describe the Lab’s unique profile in the MIT Fab Lab network as a socially shaped entity and product of a particular time and place. Most salient in this narrative is the role of its charismatic founder, whose stories and metaphors become vehicles by which we come to understand how a Fab Lab forms its own identity, balancing the relationships with local stakeholders against those with the Fab Lab network; how it promotes certain principles and values of peer production; and how it represents itself to both maker insiders and outsiders. While situated and particular to this Lab, our interpretations may have implications for the trajectories of other Fab Labs and makerspaces, as well as our understanding of peer production as a new paradigm. Keywords: Fab Lab, ethnography, MIT-Fablab Norway, material peer production Cindy Kohtala and Camille Bosqué In spite of this emerging body of work, there remains a certain mystique that surrounds Fab Labs, their objectives and activities.

Norwegian Skiing summit to sea amongst the serenity and astounding beauty of Norway’s Lyngen Alps in the Arctic Circle is an expedition of a lifetime CONQUEST + BY JULIE NIEUWENHUYS PHOTOGRAPHS BY CAROLINE VAN ’t HOFF 26 S–Magazine SNOWSPORTSCULTURE.COM SNOWSPORTSCULTURE.COM S–Magazine 27 BLUE SKIES, SCREECHING SEAGULLS AND SALTY SEA AIR; for a fleeting moment I wonder if I’m in the Mediterranean. But then reality hits me when I jump into the deep blue water off the sailboat, the Arctic Ice and shock sets in. It might have been brash to jump off a snowy boat into an ice-cold fjord so I quickly put on some clothes and am handed a typical Norse specialty; a shot of Aquavit, a double distilled potato 40% liqueur.. Skål! While most skiers stored away their skis in April, it is not quite the end of our winter. We found the ultimate way to prolong our ski season by a few weeks. We are at the small Norwegian airport of Tromsø, 300 kilometres above the Arctic Circle, where we welcome our tired friends, who have flown in from North America. Our crew for this Arctic adventure consists of pro skier Molly Baker, a film crew from Mt. Baker and a few of our lucky Dutch friends. It’s an eclectic group and although our backgrounds are completely different, we all share a passion for skiing. For the next month we’ll be traveling by ski, boat and car through the Lyngen Alps in Northern Norway. In this remote area on the same latitude as Siberia and Alaska, where impressive mountains and deep blue fjords dominate the scenery.

Stokes <[email protected]> ABSTRACT. The recession of mountain glaciers worldwide is increasing global sea level and, in many regions, human activities will have to adapt to changes in surface hydrology. Thus, it is important to provide up-to-date analyses of glacier change and the factors modulating their response to climate warming. Here we report changes in the extent of >120 glaciers on the Lyngen Peninsula, northern Norway, where glacier runoff is utilised for hydropower and where glacial lake outburst floods have occurred. Glaciers covered at least 114 km2 in 1953 and we compare this inventory with those from 1988, 2001 and a new one from 2014, and previously-dated Little Ice Age (LIA) limits. Results show a − steady reduction in area (∼0.3% a 1) between their LIA maximum (∼1915) and 1988, consistent with increasing summer air temperatures, but recession paused between 1988 and 2001, coinciding with increased winter precipitation.
