Distribution patterns of several insects associated with dead wood indicate that they are weak dispersers (Økland 1994; Nilsson & Baranowski 1997; Ranius 2000; Siitonen & Saaristo 2000), but few studies have directly assessed the dispersal ability of these species (but see Ranius & Hedin 2001). This thesis is based on investigations in which key features of the dispersal biology of wood-living insects were studied and related to spatial distribution patterns of these species observed in the field. Insect movement by flight Insect movements by flight can be divided into two types (vegetative and migratory) with distinct behavioural characteristics (Dingle 1996; Woiwod et al. 2001). Vegetative movements are essentially explorations for certain resources (e.g. food, shelter, mates, oviposition sites etc.), and are interrupted as soon as the targeted resources are encountered (Dingle 1996; Woiwod 2001). -

The number A of abdominal segments varies, however; there are only six in the Collembola (springtails), 9–12 in the Protura, and 10 in the Diplura, whereas in all other hexapods there are strictly 11. Insects are now regarded as comprising only those hexapods with 11 abdominal segments. Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000). -

Es donen els caràcters taxonòmics, la distribució, la biologia i la bibliografia de les vuit espècies del gènere presents a la Península, ja que no hi ha cap citació de les Balears. S’aporten claus subgenèriques i específiques, així com la representació gràfica de les antenes, l’últim artell dels palps maxil·lars, l’edeagus en visió ventral amb detall de la peça mitjana i l’habitus de totes les espècies. Paraules clau: Coleoptera; Ptinidae; Dorcatominae; Dorcatoma; revisió; península Ibè- rica. Abstract. Dorcatominae from the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands. 2nd note. Genus Dorcatoma Herbst, 1792 (Coleoptera: Ptinidae) This note continues the review of the subfamily Dorcatominae from the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands. Taxonomic characters, distribution, biology and literature of the eight species present on the Peninsula are given, because there is no citation from the Balearic Islands. Keys of subgenus and species are given. A graphical representation of the antennae, last segment of maxillary palps, aedeagus in ventral view with details of the median piece and habitus of all species are also given. The Francesco Vitale Sicilian collection of Apionidae is critically revised. Ho- plopodapion poupillieri (Wencker, 1864), Ischnopterapion (Ischnopterapion) aeneomicans nothum (Desbrochers des Loges, 1897) and Pseudoprotapion dumeei (A. Hoffmann, 1957) are recorded for the first time from Sicily and Italy; Omphalapion laevigatum (Paykull, 1792) is recorded for the first time from Sicily, whereas the presence on the islandof Aizobius sedi (Germar, 1818) and Acentrotypus brunnipes (Boheman, 1839), until now considered doubtful, is confirmed. All species quoted from Sicily by Vitale are listed and commented. In addition, the previous citation of Ceratapion (Echinostroma) basicorne (Illiger, 1807) from Cyprus is attributed to Ceratapion (Echinostroma) curtii (Wagner, 1920) and C. curtii is recorded for the first time from this country. Brief comments on our current knowledge of the apionid fauna of Sicily are also included. 1. Introduction Francesco Vitale (Messina, September 17, 1861 – Messina, February 9, 1953) was an enthusiastic amateur entomologist whose field work was of great importance for the knowledge of the Sicilian beetle fauna. From 1881 to 1942 he published about 100 scientific works, many of which dedicated to the study of the superfamily Curculionoidea. In 1889 he published his first note on the then genus Apion, a report full of biological and chorological data on the 52 species collected by him from 1884 to 1888 in the surroundings of Messina, and including some considerations on the 72 species of Apionidae then reported from the whole of Sicily. -

Several studies have been done on old hollow oaks and they have been shown to harbour a species-rich saproxylic beetle fauna. However, other broad-leaved trees might also be important to consider as supporting habitats. The aim of this study was to investigate to what extent saproxylic beetles are tree genus specialists. Pitfall traps and window traps were used to compare the saproxylic beetle fauna in oak, ash, norway maple and small- leaved lime in an area dominated by old oaks. 5,501 specimens of saproxylic beetles were found, belonging to 239 species of which 27 species were red-listed. -

Fennica 13: 79– 84. A new species of the genus Dorcatoma Herbst (Coleoptera: Anobiidae) is described based on material from Latvia and Sweden, and recorded also for Poland. Dorcatoma janssoni n. sp. is very close in appearance to D. chrysomelina Sturm, but male genitalia and biology are different. Antennae and male and female genitalia are figured, and the biology of the new species is described. Dorcatoma ambjoerni Baranowski is removed from the syn- onymy of D. setosella Mulsant & Rey. A key is provided for the European species of the Dorcatoma chrysomelina-group. Sibbald Point Provincial Park
SIBBALD POINT PROVINCIAL PARK One Malaise trap was deployed at Sibbald Point Provincial Park in 2014 (44.32982, -79.32737, 233m ASL; Figure 1). This trap collected arthropods for twenty weeks from May 1 – September 22, 2014. All 10 Malaise trap samples were processed using the bulk sample analysis protocol. A total of 1691 BINs were obtained. Over half the BINs captured were flies (Diptera), followed by bees, ants and wasps (Hymenoptera), beetles (Coleoptera), and moths and butterflies (Lepidoptera; Figure 2). In total, 399 arthropod species were named, representing 26.9% of the BINs from the site (Appendix 1). All the BINs were assigned at least to family, and 60.6% were assigned to a genus Figure 1. Atlas of Yorkshire Coleoptera (VCs 61-65) Part 9 – Derodontoidea, Bostrichoidea and Lymexyloidea Introduction This section of the atlas deals with the Superfamilies Derodontoidea, Bostrichoidea and Lymexyloidea, a total of 104 species, of which there are 57 recorded in Yorkshire. Each species in the database is considered and in each case a distribution map representing records on the database (at 1/10/2017) is presented. The number of records on the database for each species is given in the account in the form (a,b,c,d,e) where 'a' to 'e' are the number of records from VC61 to VC65 respectively. These figures include undated records (see comment on undated records in the paragraph below on mapping). As a recorder, I shall continue to use the vice-county recording system, as the county is thereby divided up into manageable, roughly equal, areas for recording purposes. For an explanation of the vice-county recording system, under a system devised in Watson (1883) and subsequently documented by Dandy (1969), Britain was divided into convenient recording areas ("vice-counties"). Thus Yorkshire was divided into vice-counties numbered 61 to 65 inclusive, and notwithstanding fairly recent county boundary reorganisations and changes, the vice-county system remains a constant and convenient one for recording purposes; in the text, reference to “Yorkshire” implies VC61 to VC65 ignoring modern boundary changes. For some species there are many records, and for others only one or two. In cases where there are five records or less full details of the known records are given. Many common species have quite a high proportion of recent records.
