Fennica 4:115- 129. The possible use of secondary genitalia (styles and spiculum ventrale) for the identification of females of Altica is investigated. Two identification keys are presented, one using both morphological and secondary genital characters and one using secondary genital characters only. The Finnish species are reviewed: A. cirsii Israelson is deleted, and A. quercetorum saliceti Weise and A. carduorum (Guerin-Meneville) are added to the Finnish list, now comprising 12 species. The geographical and temporal aspects of the distribution of the species in Finland is shown on UTM maps. SWW TO M"7-5001 PREFACE This volume is essentially a revision of my 1964 publication, Checklist of the Mallophaga of North America (north of Mexico), which reflects the taxonomic studies published since that date. Host criteria for the birds has been expanded to include consideration of all species listed in The A. 0. U. Checklist of North American Birds. Fifth Edition (1957). A few species of birds definitely known to be extinct are omitted from the listings of probable hosts, even though new species may still be found on museum skins. Mammal hosts considered remain those recorded in Millsr and Kellogg, List of North American Recent Mammals (1955), as; being found north of Mexico. Corres pondence with Dr. Louis G. Gentner, a recognized authority on the genus Altica, concerning identification of the beetle disclosed that very little was known about the life history or habits of this species. -

A species list, identification key, short diagnoses and illustrations of all taxa are given. Brief information on known ecological preferences of species is given. INTRODUCTION Anthicidae are a cosmopolitan family of small to medium-sized, fast-moving beetles of the superfamily Tenebrionoidea. Anthicidae are represented in the World fauna by approximately 100 genera, and about 3500 species (Chandler, 2010). Only a few species are known from the fossil record. The last revision of the British Anthicidae was published by F. D. Buck (1954) in the well-known series Handbooks for the Identification of British Insects. Since then, there have been numerous nomenclatural changes within Anthicidae, and some additional species (introduced) have been recorded from the UK, making Buck’s key out of date. During 2004 and 2005 a total of 3356 specimens of Anthicidae from the UK and Ireland were examined by the author, mainly from the collections of The Natural History Museum (London), Oxford University Museum of Natural History and National Museum of Ireland. Additional data for more than 2100 specimens were received from other British museums and private collections between 2005 and 2007. A new key and short diagnoses for the genera are presented, as well as data on habitats and general distribution of species. -

Scottish Bees Introduction to bees Bees are fascinating insects that can be found in a broad range of habitats from urban gardens to grasslands and wetlands. There are over 270 species of bee in the UK in 6 families - 115 of these have been recorded in Scotland, with 4 species now thought to be extinct and insufficient data available for another 2 species. Bees are very diverse, varying in size, tongue-length and flower preference. In the UK we have 1 species of honey bee, 24 species of bumblebee and the rest are solitary bees. They fulfil an essential ecological and environmental role as one of the most significant groups of pollinating insects, all of which we depend upon for the pollination of 80% of our wild and cultivated plants. Some flowers are in fact designed specifically for bee pollination, to the exclusion of generalist pollinators. Bees and their relatives Bees are classified in the complex insect order Hymenoptera (meaning membrane-winged), which also includes many kinds of parasitic wasps, gall wasps, hunting wasps, ants and sawflies. There are about 150,000 species of Hymenoptera known worldwide separated into two sub-orders. The first is the most primitive sub-order Symphyta which includes the sawflies and their relatives, lacking a wasp-waist and generally with free-living caterpillar-like larvae. The second is the sub-order Apocrita, which includes the ants, bees and wasps which are ’wasp-waisted’ and have grub-like larvae that develop within hosts, galls or nests. The sub-order Apocrita is in turn divided into two sections, the Parasitica and Aculeata. -

For this aim, 31 bird specimens belonging to 23 bird species which were injured or died were examined for the louse infestation. Firstly, the feathers of each bird were inspected macroscopically, all observed louse specimens were collected and then the examined birds were treated with a synthetic pyrethroid spray (Biyo avispray-Biyoteknik®). The collected lice were placed into the tubes with 70% alcohol and mounted on slides with Canada balsam after being cleared in KOH 10%. Then the collected chewing lice were identified under the light microscobe. Eleven out of totally 31 (35.48%) birds were found to be infested with at least one chewing louse species. Eighteen lice species were found belonging to 16 genera on infested birds. Thirteen of 18 lice species; Actornithophilus piceus piceus (Denny, 1842); Anaticola phoenicopteri (Coincide, 1859); Anatoecus pygaspis (Nitzsch, 1866); Colpocephalum heterosoma Piaget, 1880; C. polonum Eichler and Zlotorzycka, 1971; Fulicoffula lurida (Nitzsch, 1818); Incidifrons fulicia (Linnaeus, 1758); Meromenopon meropis Clay ve Meinertzhagen, 1941; Meropoecus meropis (Denny, 1842); Pseudomenopon pilosum (Scopoli, 1763); Rallicola fulicia (Denny, 1842); Saemundssonia lari Fabricius, O, 1780), and Trinoton femoratum Piaget, 1889 have been recorded from Turkey for the first time. -
