When Horace’s house fills up with a frightening parade of female relatives who demand he support them financially, he is rapidly converted to eager pro-suffragist, joining thousands of other men to march on the House of Commons.” Aurora Metro in association with the Orange Tree Theatre presents the sparkling comedy ‘How The Vote Was Won’, Saturday 19th June, 11am at the Orange Tree Theatre. Written by Cicely Hamilton and Chris St John, the play was originally staged by suffrage groups all over Britain and in the USA. Cicely Hamilton (1862-1952) was one of the most prolific and successful of the suffrage playwrights. She spoke at rallies and published widely on suffrage topics. Like her novel Marriage as Trade, her play Diana of Dobson’s dealt with the economic options open to women. Christabel Marshall (1871-1960) assumed the name Christopher St John upon her conversion to Catholicism and because she felt herself better suited to a man’s name. -

Elizabeth Garrett Anderson in context: the origins of the women’s movement in mid- Victorian Britain By Professor Lawrence Goldman In 1840 in London at the first World Anti-Slavery Convention, a woman rose to speak from the separate enclosure where all women attendees at the meeting had been corralled. There was consternation and uproar and she was silenced. The following day The Times carried an editorial on the meeting and made unkind remarks on the manners of our American cousins because the woman in question was from the United States. Her name was Elizabeth Cady Stanton and she is often compared with Millicent Garrett Fawcett, the equally famous sister of Elizabeth Garrett Anderson. Elizabeth Cady Stanton led the movement for women’s enfranchisement in America in the late-19th century and often attested that it was her treatment in London in 1840 which made her the leading American feminist of her generation. In Britain in 1840 no respectable woman would speak in public; that was the privilege of men only. Yet fast-forward to Birmingham in October 1857 and the opening congress of an organisation called the Social Science Association, and here, for the first time, 17 years later, a middle-class woman spoke in open and mixed company. Her name was Mary Carpenter and she spoke about her work rescuing street children in Bristol and educating them in so-called ragged schools. Miss Carpenter was already a famous female philanthropist and the audience for this landmark speech was so large that the meeting was delayed while everyone moved to a bigger venue. -

Lord David Cecil's discussion of Gaskell in Early Victorian Novelists (London: Constable, 1934) is a notorious example of devaluing a writer by reference to her femininity: 'she was all a woman was expected to be; gentle, domestic, tactful, unintelledual, prone to tears, easily shocked. So far from chafing at the limits imposed on her activities, she accepted them with serene satisfaction' (p. 198). The first writer to give extended treatment to Gaskell's involvement in feminism is Aina Rubenius in The Woman Question in Mrs Gaskell's Life and Work (Uppsala: Lundequistka Bokhandeln, 1950). 2. Shooting the Movement: Black Panther Party Photography and African American Protest Tr a di ti o n s T.N. P h u Abstract: Although the failure of the Black Panther Party has often been attributed to the violence which consumed it, the photographic record suggests otherwise. This paper argues that the movement in fact developed a striking and self-aware protest aesthetic. Moreover, this still influential self-referential visuality emphasized the spectacular forms of defiance, contributing, in doing so, to African American traditions of protest conventionally rooted in the oral tradition. A focus on Black Panther Party photography helps account for how the rhetorical violence which focused the BPP’s protest aesthetic became complexly indistinguishable from violent realization. Waterbury, Connecticut, United States HOW ANNIE LEIBOVITZ GOT INTO PHOTOGRAPHY? During a vacation from school, Leibovitz visited her family, then living in the Philippines. She and her mother took a trip to Japan, where she bought a camera and began taking pictures. When she returned to school, Leibovitz enrolled in a night class in photography. "I was totally seduced by the wonderment of it all," she told a writer for Art News. "To see something that afternoon and have it materialize before your eyes that same day.
