Born and educated in Idaho, his college work includes a Bachelor's Degree (Honors) in history and Russian and graduate work in education. He served in the U. S. Air Force and as a Naval Reserve Officer and has taught high school science and matherratics. His business experience includes agriculture, insurance, and retail merchandising.

Mr. Hansen was elected in 1964 to the 89th Congress from Idaho's Second Congress­ ional District against the tide of a Presidential landslide, and re-elected by a record margin to the 90th Congress in 1966. In 1968 he conducted a strong, but unsuccessful campaign for election to the U. S. Senate;· r.·Jhich was one of the Nation's featured races. As a Member of Congress he served on two :rn.J.jor Com­ mittees--Agriculture and Interior and Insular Affair-3--and gained wide rec­ ognition for his leadership, effectiveness and public speaking.

Mr. Hansen joined the Department of Agriculture in Ja11uary 1969 an Deputy Under Secretary where he organized Congressional Liaison services for the new Adminis­ tration. In March of that year he was appointed to head the Agricultural Stabi­ lization and Conservation Serviee's extensive State and County operations re­ sponsible for nationwide administration of Federal fa_~ programs through some 3,000 offices in 50 States and Puerto P-i.co. He also served as a Deputy Vice President of the Commodity Credit Corporation. ·

Prior to his Congressional Service, Mr. Hansen had been elected as t1ayor of Idaho's ninth largest city--the youngest municipal executive in the State--and twice elected as a City Commissioner for what was then the State's largest city. Mr. Hansen earned recognition for progressive actions as a municipal official. He became knor... m as "Alameda's 1'-liracle Mayor" and in 1961 during his term of office, this city was named "Idaho City of the Year." In 1962, he initiated and helped lead the successful merger of tHo of Idaho's ITLl.jor cities, Alameda and Pocatello, to form the largest city in the State. In 19 6 3 , with Hr. Hansen serving on the combined Board of Commissioners as Vice Chairman, the ne~v city of Pocatello also achieved the "Idaho City of the Year" at-lard and honorable ·mention as "All America City." During this same period, as a member of the Board of Directors of the Idaho tiunicipal League, he initiated reforTil.s ~.;rhich turned the problem-ridden State association of city govern.'TI2nts into a reou­ table and effective organization.
