Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

Chapter 48 Creative destructor Starting in the late 19th century, when the Hall-Heroult electrolytic reduction process made it possible for aluminum to be produced as a commodity, aluminum companies began to consolidate and secure raw material sources. Alcoa led the way, acquiring and building hydroelectric facilities, bauxite mines, alumina refineries, aluminum smelters, fabricating plants and even advanced research laboratories to develop more efficient processing technologies and new products. The vertical integration model was similar to the organizing system used by petroleum companies, which explored and drilled for oil, built pipelines and ships to transport oil, owned refineries that turned oil into gasoline and other products, and even set up retail outlets around the world to sell their products. The global economy dramatically changed after World War II, as former colonies with raw materials needed by developed countries began to ask for a piece of the action. At the same time, more corporations with the financial and technical means to enter at least one phase of aluminum production began to compete in the marketplace. As the global Big 6 oligopoly became challenged on multiple fronts, a commodity broker with a Machiavellian philosophy and a natural instinct for deal- making smelled blood and started picking the system apart. Marc Rich began by taking advantage of the oil market, out-foxing the petroleum giants and making a killing during the energy crises of the 1970s. A long-time metals trader, Rich next eyed the weakened aluminum industry during the 1980s, when depressed demand and over-capacity collided with rising energy costs, according to Shawn Tully’s 1988 account in Fortune. -

Document Set DOCUMENT 1: Statement of Susan Baker of the Parents Music Resource Center, 1985 Senate Hearings The Parents Music Resource Center was organized in May of this year by mothers of young children who are very concerned by the growing trend in music toward lyrics that are sexually explicit, excessively violent, or glorify the use of drugs and alcohol. Our primary purpose is to educate and inform parents about this alarming trend as well as to ask the industry to exercise self-restraint. Some say there is no cause for concern. We believe there is. Teen pregnancies and teenage suicide rates are at epidemic proportions today. The Noedecker Report states that in the United States of America we have the highest teen pregnancy rate of any developed country: 96 out of 1,000 teenage girls become pregnant. Rape is up 7 percent in the latest statistics, and the suicide rates of youth between 16 and 24 has gone up 300 percent in the last three decades while the adult level has remained the same. There certainly are many causes for these ills in our society, but it is our contention that the pervasive messages aimed at children which promote and glorify suicide, rape… and so on, have to be numbered among the contributing factors…. Now that more and more elementary school children are becoming consumers of rock music, we think it is imperative to discuss this question. What can be done to help parents who want to protect their children from these messages if they want to? I was only seventeen years old at the time of the election, and therefore could not vote in it. But even though I was not eligible to participate in the election, I – along with the rest of the country – was completely mesmerized as the post-election events unfolded. Although I tried to keep up with everything, I soon became confused by all the different lawsuits and what their results meant. After Bush v. Gore was re vealed on December 12, I was disappointed by the result but not surprised – George W. Bush had been the presumptive winner, and that had not changed since the day after Election Day . The finality that December 12 brought, however, did not change my sentim ents: why didn’t my guy win? I had read many newspaper articles that told of voter disenfranchisement in Palm Beach County and questionable legality of Bush votes. -

Kari Gottfried POL 317: U.S. Health Policy & Politics CONVERSATIONS MATTER Why Medicare (Unlike Medicaid and the Veterans Health Administration) Cannot Negotiate Prescription Drug Prices Gottfried 1 Introduction & Background The national conversation around health care reform has been approached from many angles, but the general consensus is this: the United States is spending more on health care, and getting less in return, than any other comparable country.1 There are many reasons why this is the case, and health policy experts have been trying to get to the bottom of this problem for years. One case they make for astronomical health care costs is the rising price of prescription drugs.2 Both Democrats and Republicans have emerged as critics of this issue, placing the blame on the pharmaceutical industry and their powerful lobby.3 In a Congressional hearing last February, Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) challenged pharmaceutical executives, telling them, “We cannot continue to give Big Pharma the blank check that you have had to pay for high- priced prescription drugs.”4 Senator Cassidy (R-La.) argues that the burden should not be placed on the government to pay for these expensive drugs, since the cost eventually falls on taxpayers. He says “if the taxpayer is paying that money… it is almost as if the taxpayer has ‘stupid’ written on their face, which they should not. That is unfair.”5 However, legislators discount the role they have had in this crisis.
