Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

Document Set DOCUMENT 1: Statement of Susan Baker of the Parents Music Resource Center, 1985 Senate Hearings The Parents Music Resource Center was organized in May of this year by mothers of young children who are very concerned by the growing trend in music toward lyrics that are sexually explicit, excessively violent, or glorify the use of drugs and alcohol. Our primary purpose is to educate and inform parents about this alarming trend as well as to ask the industry to exercise self-restraint. Some say there is no cause for concern. We believe there is. Teen pregnancies and teenage suicide rates are at epidemic proportions today. The Noedecker Report states that in the United States of America we have the highest teen pregnancy rate of any developed country: 96 out of 1,000 teenage girls become pregnant. Rape is up 7 percent in the latest statistics, and the suicide rates of youth between 16 and 24 has gone up 300 percent in the last three decades while the adult level has remained the same. There certainly are many causes for these ills in our society, but it is our contention that the pervasive messages aimed at children which promote and glorify suicide, rape… and so on, have to be numbered among the contributing factors…. Now that more and more elementary school children are becoming consumers of rock music, we think it is imperative to discuss this question. What can be done to help parents who want to protect their children from these messages if they want to? In the first episode, Vice President Selina Meyer keeps asking her secretary whether the president has called. He hasn’t. She then walks into a U.S. senator’s office and asks of her old colleague, “What have I been missing here?” Without looking up from her computer, the senator responds, “Power.” Until recently, vice presidents were not very interesting nor was the relationship between presidents and their vice presidents very consequential—and for good reason. Historically, vice presidents have been understudies, have often been disliked or even despised by the president they served, and have been used by political parties, derided by journalists, and ridiculed by the public. The job of vice president has been so peripheral that VPs themselves have even made fun of the office. That’s because from the beginning of the nineteenth century until the last decade of the twentieth century, most vice presidents were chosen to “balance” the ticket. The balance in question could be geographic—a northern presidential candidate like John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts picked a southerner like Lyndon B. -

COMMENTS From Baking Bread to Making Dough: Legal and Societal Restrictions on the Employment of First Ladies SARA KRAUSERT t The paradigmatic First Lady' embodies the traditional role played by women in the United States. Since the position's creation, both Presidents and the public have wanted First Ladies to be seen and not heard. Some First Ladies have stayed within these confines, either by doing no more than simply supporting their husbands, or by taking care to exercise power only behind the scenes. Several First Ladies in this century, however have followed the lead of Eleanor Roosevelt, who broke barriers in her vigorous campaigns for various social causes, and they have brought many worthy issues to the forefront of the American consciousness.' Most recently, with the rumblings of discontent with the role's limited opportunities for independent action that accompanied the arrival of the women's movement, Rosalynn Carter and Hillary Clinton attempted to expand the role of the First Lady even further by becoming policy-makers during their husbands' presidencies.3 This evolution in the office of First Lady parallels women's general progress in society. -

These have been spaced at in tervals of about six years. The edition of the last one, dated 1953, having been exhausted, I suggested that he might wel come the cooperation of the faculties of AASDJ schools in the choice of the titles to comprise a new list. He accepted the idea enthusiastically, and a tentative list of 250 books was sent out for checking - five copies of the list to the head of each school. There was a gratifying response, as the attached list of cooperators attests. The original project aimed at a list of 100, but suggestions of our correspondents led to some changes in categories and to the addition of a number of titles, so that we have come up with a list of 200 books. Dean Mott will explain the growth of the total list in his "Introduction." The annota tions are his, as well as the arrangement into categories. The expense of publication has been assumed by the School of Journalism of the University of Missouri, which issues the iist as a bulletin in its Journalism Series for free distribution. I hope this compilation will be found useful. I wish to thank heartily the 97 collaborators in this project, whose names follow. -

Pulitzer, not just a prize By: Alannah Cooper It’s the mid 1800’s and Joseph Pulitzer was born in Mako, Hungary. His father is a wealthy merchant and his mother is a devout Roman Catholic. Joseph has always wanted to become a soldier, but was denied many times for his weak eyesight and poor health. When he was in Hamburg, Germany, he met a bounty recruiter for the U.S union army and became a substitute draftee. After this, he finally ended up in the United States in 1864 in St. Louis, Missouri, where he had many different jobs. Some of these jobs included a waiter, mule tender and jack driver. He then went and studied English at Mercantile Library. where he was asked to work at Carl Schurz paper. Later in 1883 he ended up buying the New York World, where he promised that he would expose fraud and fight all public abuses. Then, in 1895, he bought the New York Journal which led to him and William Randolph Hearst having a competition against each other. Later he ended up retiring in 1907 when he stated, “I know that my retirement will make no difference in its [my newspaper's] cardinal principles, that it will always fight for progress and reform, never tolerate injustice or corruption, always fight demagogues of all parties, never belong to any party, always oppose privileged classes and public plunderers, never lack sympathy with the poor, always remain devoted to the public welfare, never be satisfied with merely printing news, always be drastically independent, never be afraid to attack wrong, whether by predatory plutocracy or predatory poverty.”.
