I was only seventeen years old at the time of the election, and therefore could not vote in it. But even though I was not eligible to participate in the election, I – along with the rest of the country – was completely mesmerized as the post-election events unfolded. Although I tried to keep up with everything, I soon became confused by all the different lawsuits and what their results meant. After Bush v. Gore was re vealed on December 12, I was disappointed by the result but not surprised – George W. Bush had been the presumptive winner, and that had not changed since the day after Election Day . The finality that December 12 brought, however, did not change my sentim ents: why didn’t my guy win? I had read many newspaper articles that told of voter disenfranchisement in Palm Beach County and questionable legality of Bush votes.

These have been spaced at in tervals of about six years. The edition of the last one, dated 1953, having been exhausted, I suggested that he might wel come the cooperation of the faculties of AASDJ schools in the choice of the titles to comprise a new list. He accepted the idea enthusiastically, and a tentative list of 250 books was sent out for checking - five copies of the list to the head of each school. There was a gratifying response, as the attached list of cooperators attests. The original project aimed at a list of 100, but suggestions of our correspondents led to some changes in categories and to the addition of a number of titles, so that we have come up with a list of 200 books. Dean Mott will explain the growth of the total list in his "Introduction." The annota tions are his, as well as the arrangement into categories. The expense of publication has been assumed by the School of Journalism of the University of Missouri, which issues the iist as a bulletin in its Journalism Series for free distribution. I hope this compilation will be found useful. I wish to thank heartily the 97 collaborators in this project, whose names follow.

Pulitzer, not just a prize By: Alannah Cooper It’s the mid 1800’s and Joseph Pulitzer was born in Mako, Hungary. His father is a wealthy merchant and his mother is a devout Roman Catholic. Joseph has always wanted to become a soldier, but was denied many times for his weak eyesight and poor health. When he was in Hamburg, Germany, he met a bounty recruiter for the U.S union army and became a substitute draftee. After this, he finally ended up in the United States in 1864 in St. Louis, Missouri, where he had many different jobs. Some of these jobs included a waiter, mule tender and jack driver. He then went and studied English at Mercantile Library. where he was asked to work at Carl Schurz paper. Later in 1883 he ended up buying the New York World, where he promised that he would expose fraud and fight all public abuses. Then, in 1895, he bought the New York Journal which led to him and William Randolph Hearst having a competition against each other. Later he ended up retiring in 1907 when he stated, “I know that my retirement will make no difference in its [my newspaper's] cardinal principles, that it will always fight for progress and reform, never tolerate injustice or corruption, always fight demagogues of all parties, never belong to any party, always oppose privileged classes and public plunderers, never lack sympathy with the poor, always remain devoted to the public welfare, never be satisfied with merely printing news, always be drastically independent, never be afraid to attack wrong, whether by predatory plutocracy or predatory poverty.”.

This part of the world, known as Latin America, includes present-day Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. In the early 1800s, most of Latin America became independent from Spain, forming many of the separate nations that make up Latin America today. The United States, under the Monroe Doctrine in 1823, promised to protect these new nations from future European interference. The Monroe Doctrine also said, however, that the U.S. would not interfere with any colonies that European countries still had. Although Spain had lost most of Latin America by the 1820s, it still controlled Cuba and Puerto Rico. Spain also held the Philippines and Guam in the Pacific. The people of these colonies were not happy with Spanish rule, and by the late 1800s, rebellions had broken out in Cuba and the Philippines. The Spanish government responded by cracking down harshly on the people of these colonies, depriving them of basic rights and freedoms.

He emigrated to the United States when he was seventeen years old, and was naturalized on his twentieth birthday. He spent his career in journalism working in the mid-west and New York. From 1871 he was also the owner or part- owner of many newspapers. His most famous newspaper was the New York World (which many believe was the model for the Daily Planet of the Superman stories). The World campaigned against corruption, and exposed many scandals. It was also a strong supporter of the rights of the working man. In later life, Joseph Pulitzer collapsed from overwork, and lost his sight. He became dedicated to improving the quality of journalism in America, and donated $1 million to Columbia University to found a school of journalism. However, his most significant contribution was the establishment of the Pulitzer prizes in his will. These prizes for excellence in journalism have been given every year since 1917 by Columbia University. Since 1942 there have been extra categories for press photography, and later still for criticism, feature writing and commentary. The prize was originally for $500, but today the winners of the prize receive a gold medal. However, the real value of the prize is that it confirms that the journalist who has received the award is the best American journalist of the year - a fact that is worth much more than $500 to the journalist and to the newspaper that employs him or her.
