Real CF v Arsenal FC MATCH PRESS KIT Santiago Bernabéu, Madrid Tuesday, 21 February 2006 - 20:45 CET First knockout round - Matchday 7

Both Real Madrid CF and Arsenal FC have a history rich in European tradition and their trophy cabinets pay testament to their success on foreign fields.Yet they have never before crossed swords in UEFA club competition, a factor adding more intrigue to this mouth-watering first knockout round tie.

· As comfortable winners of Group B with a record that suffered only one blemish, a 0-0 home draw with AFC Ajax on Matchday 6, the London side have earned the right to stage the second leg on 8 March with the first encounter taking place at the Santiago Bernabéu. Arsenal have never progressed further than the quarter-final stage of Europe©s most prestigious club competition while Madrid are hoping to put a tenth European Champion Clubs© Cup triumph on their honours board.

History of success · Although their results so far would suggest that Arsenal approach the fixture as favourites ± their opponents lost twice in finishing second in Group F ± Madrid©s confidence lies in their traditional superiority over English sides in the home-and-away format. Strangely, they have fared less well in one-off games, going down to Liverpool FC in the 1980/81 European Champion Clubs© Cup final and to Chelsea FC both in the 1970/71 UEFA Cup Winners© Cup final, though that game went to a replay, and the 1998 UEFA Super Cup.

Strong away · Of their last five two-legged encounters against English sides, Madrid©s record over the two games has always taken them through. Most often their best work has been done on opposition territory, the exception being their most recent encounter. In the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League quarter-final a 3-1 home win against Manchester United FC was sufficient insurance when the away leg ended 4-3 to Sir Alex Ferguson©s team, Ronaldo firing a glorious hat-trick for Madrid.

First of five ·Their first-ever confrontation with the Manchester men, the 1956/57 European Cup semi-final, was equally memorable as it provided a 5-3 aggregate victory en route to a bigger celebration as Madrid retained the new trophy, their second success in a run of five straight triumphs.

Little reward in Spain · Arsenal, competing in their eighth UEFA Champions League campaign, have good memories of their last tussle with Spanish opponents, defeating RC Celta de Vigo home and away in the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League first knockout round with scoring both goals in a 2-0 home win that followed a 3-2 victory in Spain. Previously they had travelled less effectively, losing five successive games.

· Arsenal twice lost in the UEFA Cup Winners© Cup final to Spanish sides.Valencia CF were victors in the 1979/80 edition and triumphed in the 1994/95 showpiece.

Mixed group form · Madrid, competing for the tenth time in a competition they have won on three occasions, were humbled in their opening game as Olympique Lyonnais inflicted a 3-0 defeat but recovered to take the runners-up place in Group F with wins in their next three outings.

· They finished the section with a home draw with Lyon and defeat in Greece against Olympiacos CFP and the fact that they conceded eight goals in six games will be of concern to coach Juan Ramón López Caro as he plots a way past the English side.

Comfortable progress · In their final season at the Highbury stadium that has been home for 93 years, Arsenal are desperate for success in Europe. Their UEFA Champions League form has provided a positive contrast to an inconsistent Premiership campaign and they came close to achieving what only four clubs had managed before: a clean sweep of their group games.

· Ajax©s youngsters thwarted them in that quest and Thierry Henry©s missed penalty added to Arsenal©s disappointment but with just two goals conceded in six games there was much for coach Arsène Wenger to savour. Henry©s consolation was to finish as their top scorer with three goals.

No joy last season · Both teams will be eager to erase the memory of defeat at this stage in last season©s competition. A 3-1 defeat in Germany left Arsenal with too much to do at home to FC Bayern München and they needed more than Henry©s lone strike. Madrid, pursuing a ninth successive quarter-final berth, won their home leg against Juventus through Iván Helguera©s header but succumbed 2-0 away after extra time.

· Míchel Salgado celebrated his 300th Primera División appearance against Alavés.

· Madrid finally successfully concluded their long pursuit of Brazilian defender Cicinho, who was unveiled at the Santiago Bernabéu on 29 December after agreeing a four-and-a-half year contract. His debut was postponed due to a delay in his transfer documents arriving in Spain so the right-back played his first match for his new club against Villarreal CF on 8 January.

· Roberto Carlos© absence against Alavés meant that his run of 37 successive league matches came to an end. Prior to Saturday©s game the last time he missed a match came on 19 February 2005, when he sat out the game against Athletic Club Bilbao through suspension.

· Zinédine Zidane scored his first hat-trick of his career in the 4-2 home victory against Sevilla FC on 15 January and dedicated his goals to a sick youngster he had met in a Madrid hospital over Christmas.

· David Cobeño has taken Diego Lopez©s place as Madrid©s reserve goalkeeper as the latter is recovering from a thigh injury.

· Pablo García injured ligaments in his left knee on 13 February and is expected to be out of action for six weeks.

· Ronaldo played his 150th Primera División match against Alavés, 37 of which were with FC .

· Madrid were bidding to reach the final of the Copa del Rey for the 37th time - a competition which they have won on 17 occasions - but bowed out in the last four after losing to Real Zaragoza. A 6-1 reverse in the first leg did the damage, and a 4-0 win for Madrid in the reverse fixture last Tuesday was not enough to keep Madrid in the competition.

· Zaragoza have now ended Madrid©s cup aspirations on four occasions, winning over two legs in 1962/63 and 1985/86 before a 3-2 victory in the 2004 final.

· According to the 2006 Deloitte Football Money League, Madrid are now the richest club in the world with revenue of €276m in 2004/05, overtaking Manchester United FC who had finished top of the list for the past eight seasons.

· No Arsenal player played every minute of their six UEFA Champions League group-stage games this season.

· Lauren, Cesc Fabregas and José Antonio Reyes are the only Arsenal players to have played some part in each of the six matches.

· Kolo Touré and Mathieu Flamini each played the full 90 minutes in five of the six group-stage games, with Flamini sitting out Matchday 1 and Touré missing Matchday 5.

· Thierry Henry needs to make just three more appearances for his 75th match in the UEFA Champions League proper. He is also four matches away from his century of UEFA club competition matches. He is three goals away from 50 in UEFA club competition.

· Ashley Cole is six matches away from his 50th game in the UEFA Champions League, having never played any other UEFA club competition games.

· Lauren is three matches away from his 75th appearance in UEFA club competition.

· Philippe Senderos celebrated his 21st birthday on 14 February. Full-back Kerrea Gilbert will turn 19 on 28 February.

· In Arsenal©s last league game, Luis García©s late winner for Liverpool FC at Anfield on 14 February was the 250th goal the club have conceded away from home in the Premiership.

· The Liverpool result marked Arsène Wenger©s 100th defeat in 537 matches with Arsenal.

· Henry equalled Cliff Bastin©s record of 150 league goals for Arsenal with a hat-trick in the 7-0 victory against Middlesbrough FC on 14 January. The French international surpassed Bastin©s mark by scoring in the 3-2 home defeat against West Ham United FC on 1 February.

· In Arsenal©s next game, a 2-0 Premiership win away against Birmingham City FC, Henry scored his 200th goal for the club.

· Henry is the second highest scorer in the Premiership this season with 15 league goals to his name.

· Henry has scored nearly as many away goals in the UEFA Champions League this season (two) as he has in the Premiership (three).

· Even if Arsenal win all of their remaining 12 Premiership matches they will only finish the season on 77 points, six fewer than they gained last season and 13 less than in 2003/04, when they completed the season unbeaten.

· Arsenal have scored eleven goals in the first quarter of their Premiership matches, more than any other side.

· Defenders Touré and Emmanuel Eboué were part of the Ivory Coast squad that reached the final of the African Cup of Nations. Both players missed just one game and each scored in the penalty shoot-out against host nation Egypt in the final, but the Ivorians went down 4-2 on penalties.

· New signing Emmanuel Adebayor also appeared at the tournament with Togo, but is not eligible to play in the UEFA Champions League having earlier appeared in this season©s competition with AS Monaco FC.

· Adebayor is one of several new arrivals at Highbury. Vassiriki Diaby arrives from AJ Auxerre while teenage forward Theo Walcott joined for an initial €7.3m fee from Southampton FC, and both have been registered to play in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League.

· The vast majority of these games - 289 - have been played in the European Champion Clubs© Cup and/or the UEFA Champions League. · Arsenal FC are making their eighth successive attempt at winning the UEFA Champions League with their best performance to date being two quarter-final appearances in the competition during the 2000/01 and 2003/04 seasons. On the first occasion, the Gunners lost on away goals to Valencia CF after the two sides shared four goals, while more recently, Chelsea FC denied them a place in the last four with a 3-2 aggregate success that included a 2-1 victory at Highbury.

· To date, Arsenal have never advanced beyond the quarter-final stage in either the UEFA Champions League or the European Champion Clubs© Cup although they have been more successful in both the UEFA Cup Winners© Cup and UEFA Cup.

· The London club have played in three UEFA Cup Winners© Cup finals, triumphing in the 1993/94 season when they overcame Parma FC 1-0 thanks to Alan Smith©s 22nd-minute goal. UEFA Champions League: Did you know?

· In qualifying for the knockout phase, Real Madrid CF have tied Manchester United FC©s record of nine consecutive seasons in advancing past the group stage. While United©s streak came to an end this season, Madrid have featured in the knockout phase every time since the 1996/97 campaign. Regarding other teams in this season©s knockout phase, both AC Milan and Juventus have qualified for the last four knockout stages, one ahead of Arsenal FC, FC Bayern München, Chelsea FC and Olympique Lyonnais.

· Arsenal are the only club in this season©s knockout phase never to have played a UEFA Champions League qualifying-round match. To date, all of Arsenal©s 74 matches have been restricted to the group stage and beyond.

Head coach profiles

Juan Ramón López Caro was appointed caretaker coach of Real Madrid CF after the dismissal of Vanderlei Luxemburgo on Sunday 4 December, and later that month earned the job until the end of the 2005/06 campaign. His only previous experience as a coach on the European stage came in RCD Mallorca©s brief UEFA Intertoto Cup campaign in July 2000, when they lost 4-3 on aggregate to FC Ceahlaul Piatra Neamt of Romania. The 42-year-old moved to Madrid in 2001 and has since enjoyed success with the club©s Castilla B team, having just led them to promotion back to the Segunda División.

López Caro©s finest moment was sealed in front of Madrid president Florentino Pérez and 57,000 fans at the Santiago Bernabéu on 27 June as his side sealed promotion back to Spanish football©s second tier. Roberto Soldado, who has proved his worth to the first team in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League group stage, was part of the victorious B team lineup.

The B team made a mixed start this season but picked up in their last three home fixtures prior to López Caro©s promotion, scoring nine goals without conceding in three victories. López Caro©s deal to lead the reserve team was due to expire in June 2006, having had his contract renewed in October 2003. At that time, the club©s then-general manager Jorge Valdano claimed the success of the reserve team would be the foundation for Madrid©s future.

Arsène Wenger was never covered in glory as a player, but has more than made up for his lack of playing success in his time as a coach, turning Arsenal FC into one of Europe©s top teams thanks to his incredible eye for a bargain and his astute footballing mind.

Born in Strasbourg in 1949, Wenger worked at RC Strasbourg and AS Cannes before AS Nancy-Lorraine offered him his big break into management. He impressed sufficiently to be offered the job as coach of AS Monaco FC in 1987. Within a year Monaco scooped the French championship and Wenger the Manager of the Year award. He reportedly turned down France and FC Bayern München to continue at Monaco, although he did move on to Japan and enjoy tremendous success with Nagoya Grampus Eight.

Appointed by Arsenal in September 1996, Wenger became the first foreigner to win the Premiership title in 1998, adding the first of four FA Cup triumphs to boot. The Gunners lost the 2000 UEFA Cup final to Galatasaray SK but claimed another double in 2002, and in 2004 played some swashbuckling football en route to becoming the first team since Preston North End FC in 1889 to negotiate a top-flight season unbeaten. Already given the freedom of Islington for his success in north London, Wenger©s status would rise to God-like levels should he steer Arsenal to UEFA Champions League glory.

Domestic news

Real Madrid CF approach their Round of 16 tie against Arsenal FC in blistering form after an emphatic weekend victory stretched their winning league run to six games. A 6-1 Copa del Rey defeat at Real Zaragoza gives some hope to the Premiership outfit, whose own inconsistent form has brought them a 7-0 win amidst a run of five defeats in nine games.

Real Madrid CF 3-0 Deportivo Alavés After ending the group stage with a disappointing 2-1 defeat at Olympiacos CFP, Madrid ambled towards the winter break in Spain with just four points from games against Málaga CF, CA Osasuna and Real Zaragoza. A goalless draw in their return to Primera División action against Villarreal CF on 8 January did not bode well, but boosted by the January arrivals of Cicinho and Antonio Cassano, Juan Ramón López Caro©s players have been in blistering form since.

Zinédine Zidane scored a hat-trick to inspire them to a 4-2 victory at home to Sevilla FC, sparking an as-yet-unbroken sequence of six consecutive Primera División victories. The likes of RCD Espanyol and Athletic Club Bilbao have discovered the team in irrepressible form as they closed the gap on faltering league leaders FC Barcelona. It looked like being a two-pronged domestic campaign as wins against Real Betis Balompié and Bilbao also took them into the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, but their hopes were ended in comprehensive fashion against Zaragoza as Diego Milito helped himself to four goals in a 6-1 first-leg win.

Although they just came up short, Madrid did triumph 4-0 in the return and almost matched that score on Saturday as they swept aside Alavés. Guti, Robinho and Cicinho were all on target, the latter not long after he had come on as a substitute for David Beckham. Another replacement, Cassano, set him up for that goal but it was the 66th-minute appearance of captain Raúl González after three months out that brought the biggest cheer at the Santiago Bernabéu. López Caro, who rested Jonathan Woodgate, Zidane and Roberto Carlos, said: "I©m satisfied with the professionalism the players demonstrated tonight, and Raúl©s return really gives us hope."

Players registered: Cicinho, Antonio Cassano, David Iglesias Players out: Jordi Codina, David Barral, Álvaro Negredo

Arsenal FC Arsenal have endured an uncharacteristically wretched time since Matchday 6, where a goalless draw against AFC Ajax rounded off their group stage campaign at Highbury. Manager Arsène Wenger could scarcely have imagined that by the time he led his side back into Europe against Madrid, the UEFA Champions League would be their only remaining hope of silverware this season.

A shortage of available defenders contributed to a string of defeats which left them out of both domestic cup competitions, the Premiership title race and looking doubtful qualifiers for next season©s UEFA Champions League. Wenger described one particularly miserable sequence, where his team were defeated by Everton FC, Wigan Athletic FC, and Bolton Wanderers FC in rapid succession, as the "worst week" he had endured as Arsenal manager. That statement came before his side lost 3-2 at home to West Ham United FC in the next match in which key defender

Sol Campbell was substituted at half-time and promptly left Highbury. The English international has not featured since and will miss the Madrid game with an ankle injury.

Occasional glimpses of a more vintage Arsenal were witnessed in 4-0 and 7-0 defeats of Portsmouth FC and Middlesbrough FC respectively, while the January signings of Vassiriki Diaby and Theo Walcott offer much promise for the future. However, of the 17 matches Arsenal played since that Ajax draw, only six resulted in victories and Wenger admitted: "At the moment we are struggling for confidence and that affects the senior players as well as the younger ones."

Players registered: Vassiriki Diaby, Theo Walcott Players out: Ryan Garry, Patrick Cregg, Quincy Owusu-Abeyie

General competition information

UEFA©s most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs© Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

· Key dates: The draws for the quarter-finals (to be played on 28/29 March and 4/5 April), semi-finals (18/19 & 25/26 April) and final are scheduled for Paris on 10 March 2006.This season's showpiece will be played at the city©s Stade de France on Wednesday 17 May 2006.

· Financial information: UEFA has estimated that the gross budgeted income for the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League will be €598m - higher than the revenue obtained last season. Based on those amounts, €453m would go to the 32 clubs, including €22.5m for the professional leagues of the participating associations, and €145m to UEFA for European football. Clubs in the group stage will receive a starting fee of €1.6m and a bonus of €321,000 per match. Performance bonuses will involve €321,000 for a win and €161,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive €1.6m each, the eight quarter-finalists €1.9m each and the four semi-finalists €2.6m.The Champions League winners will receive €6.4m, and the runners-up €3.9m.This means that a total minimum amount of €3.5m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive, at best, up to €18m, not counting the TV market pool share and gate receipts.

UEFA information

UEFA and the Football Against Racism in Europe network are preparing a guide for clubs on how to combat racism, as they continue to use the UEFA Champions League and other UEFA competitions to transmit the message that racist conduct will not be tolerated on or off the pitch.

Serious problem The guide is likely to include issues such as racial abuse, institutional exclusion, and clubs© work with minority and migrant communities. At a recent keynote conference in Barcelona, UEFA was urged to take a leading role in the anti-racism campaign and UEFA Chief Executive Lars-Christer Olsson said that racism has to be acknowledged as a serious problem within football and society.

Planning ahead

As UEFA club competitions resume after the winter break, UEFA and a number of teams have met for talks under the common banner of the European Club Forum, set up in 2002 as a platform for mutual debate. It was agreed that the format of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup will continue to evolve as the organisation attempts to foresee trends. "UEFA©s club competitions have an impact in various areas, including domestic football, so we think it is wise to plan and think ahead," said UEFA professional football director Giorgio Marchetti.

Lille record The distribution of competition revenue and payments for the release of national-team players were also on the agenda, while the UEFA Champions League group-stage attendances were analysed. In total, 3,568,172 spectators watched the 96 games, meaning that on average, stadiums were three-quarters full. The match between LOSC Lille Métropole and SL Benfica at the Stade de France drew the biggest crowd ± 76,187.

Communication system UEFA is testing a referee communication system in the UEFA Champions League this week, having also carried out tests in last week's UEFA Cup Round of 32 first-leg matches. The Matchday 7 games in question are FC Bayern München-AC Milan (refereed by Belgium©s Frank de Bleeckere); PSV Eindhoven±Olympique Lyonnais (Greece©s Kyros Vassaras); and AFC Ajax±FC Internazionale Milano (Germany©s Wolfgang Stark).

©Importance© "The decision to conduct a full battery of tests comes following the proposal of the UEFA Referees Committee, which also stressed the importance of the tests being carried out at the highest level of the game in order to test the system in a real big-match atmosphere," said UEFA
