v Real CF

Gerland - Lyon Tuesday, 13 September 2005 - 20:45 (CET) Group stage - Group F - Matchday 1

Match officials Referee Massimo De Santis (ITA) Assistant referees Alessandro Griselli (ITA), Marco Ivaldi (ITA) Fourth official Paolo Tagliavento (ITA) UEFA delegate Karel Vertongen (BEL) Match preview Gerland set for football feast Olympique Lyonnais coach Gérard Houllier is predicting plenty of goals at the Stade Gerland on Tuesday, as last season's quarter-finalists open their sixth consecutive UEFA Champions League campaign against Real Madrid CF.

Shrewd signings French champions for the past four years, Lyon have high hopes of transferring their domestic success to the European stage this term. They may have lost Michael Essien to Chelsea FC in the summer, but that blow was softened by five shrewd captures: defender Sylvain Monsoreau, midfield pair Benoît Pedretti and Tiago, and strikers John Carew and Fred.

'A thrill' Lyon's squad has recently been hailed as the strongest ever seen in France's and Houllier, who has replaced Paul Le Guen as coach, is looking forward to seeing how they measure up against Europe's finest teams. "We have many goals this season, and while the championship remains our priority, we're all excited about playing in the Champions League," said the 58-year-old. "Starting against Madrid is a thrill for our supporters and a great challenge for the players."

Madrid quality Houllier is expecting an open game as Lyon and Madrid both try to assert their authority in Group F. "The pace is likely to be very fast and with so much attacking quality on the pitch, I'm sure there'll be goals," he explained. Madrid are without the suspended Ronaldo and the injured , but Lyon's experienced trainer is taking nothing for granted. "Even without Zidane and Ronaldo, Madrid will have quality all over the pitch," said Houllier.

Extra reinforcements "They've brought in two outstanding Brazilians, Robinho and Julio Baptista, and they have also signed two defenders, [Pablo] García and [Sergio] Ramos, which is unusual for Madrid," he added. "Last year they bought Thomas Gravesen, so I expect them to be very tough to beat."

Carew spearhead Norwegian international Carew is set to spearhead the Lyon attack, with Florent Malouda and Sylvain Wiltord occupying the flanks and Tiago stepping into the midfield alongside Juninho Pernambucano and Mahamadou Diarra.

Cris crisis Houllier, however, has some problems in defence where Eric Abidal is a long-term absentee and centre-half Cris is doubtful with a knee injury sustained in Saturday's 2-1 home win against AS Monaco FC. Jérémy Berthod will continue to deputise at left-back, while Monsoreau should replace Cris if the Brazilian fails a late fitness test. "We're all hoping Cris plays," said Lyon captain Claudio Caçapa. "It'd be a shame to lose him for such an important match."

Room for improvement Madrid will be looking to improve on last season's showing after they were eliminated in the first knockout round by Juventus FC, but go into the game low on confidence having lost 3-2 at home to RC Celta de Vigo on Saturday. Brazilian coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo is hoping to see a positive reaction. "The players are upset by Saturday's display and I sense they are extremely motivated for the Lyon match," he said.

'Dangerous opponents' Luxemburgo says he will resist the temptation to make wholesale changes, but may have to do without David Beckham who has a thigh injury. "We are already missing Ronaldo and Zidane while there remains a big doubt over Beckham," he explained. "But we have many good players so there is no need to panic and start changing systems. The most important thing is that we raise our all-round level, because Lyon are dangerous opponents."

Raúl hope Madrid captain Raúl González, who should play alongside Robinho in attack, is hoping the Champions League will see the best of the nine-times champions. "For us, the Champions League is the most important thing," he said. "It seems to bring the best out of us and hopefully that will be the case again."

Match background Much to prove for Lyon and Madrid Olympique Lyonnais and Real Madrid CF were both eliminated from last season's UEFA Champions League by close margins. The French club, now domestic champions for the fourth successive season, reached the quarter-finals before losing 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 aggregate draw with PSV Eindhoven. It was the first non-final in the history of the competition to be decided by a shoot-out.

Spanish runners-up Madrid also lost narrowly, to Juventus FC in the first knockout round. Iván Helguera's goal proved the difference in Madrid, but David Trezeguet equalised in the return leg to send the tie into extra time. A 116th-minute strike from Marcelo Zalayeta then took Juventus into the last eight. So both teams may feel they are due an upturn in fortune this season. And can Raúl González be the first to 50 goals in the competition?

Lyon will play Madrid for the first time in UEFA competition, though their recent Champions League experience has pitted them against Spanish opponents on three occasions.

The first encounters saw the French champions beaten at home following defeats in Spain. In Group C of the 2000/01 first group stage, eventual finalists Valencia CF won 1-0 at the Mestalla, then 2-1 at Stade Gerland, but Lyon managed three victories elsewhere in the section to go through as well.

The following term, FC provided the opposition in Group F of the first group stage. Rivaldo and Patrick Kluivert gave the hosts a 2-0 success at Camp Nou, and as Barcelona dominated the group, Lyon lost 3-2 at home to a 94th-minute Gérard López strike.

After four defeats by Spanish clubs in four games, Lyon gained revenge in the first knockout round in 2003/04 against Real Sociedad de Fútbol. Two 1-0 wins took the Ligue 1 side into the quarter-finals to give them confidence for their meeting with Madrid.

The early European successes of Madrid were often at the expense of French teams. The 1956 and 1959 European Champion Clubs' Cup finals were both won against Stade de Reims Champagne, by 4-3 and 2-0, as the Merengues tasted glory in the tournament's first five editions.

Madrid have faced two French clubs in the Champions League. In 2003/04, they were drawn alongside Olympique de Marseille and won both Group F games, 4-2 at home and 2-1 at the Stade Vélodrome.

But in the quarter-finals of the same campaign, Madrid came unstuck against AS Monaco FC. A 4-2 home victory had seemed convincing enough, and a Raúl goal in Monaco then increased the margin. But Monaco came storming back with three goals to progress on away goals. Curiously, Madrid were undone by their own player: Monaco's on-loan forward Fernando Morientes scored crucial efforts in both legs.

Domestic News Form guide points to home wins (Saturday, 10 September 2005) While the two teams beginning their UEFA Champions League Group F campaigns at home - Olympique Lyonnais and Olympiacos CFP - were in fine form on Saturday, their respective Tuesday visitors Real Madrid CF and Rosenborg BK suffered demoralising defeats.

Olympique Lyonnais 2-1 AS Monaco FC

Olympique Lyonnais will start their sixth consecutive Champions League campaign from the familiar position of first in Ligue 1 thanks to their victory against Monaco. New Brazilian signing Fred made a real impact in his first match in Europe, the former Cruzeiro EC player scoring at the start of each half. Monaco Olivier Kapo was shown a second yellow card in the 57th minute and Lyon proved dominant except when David Gigliotti reduced their lead ten minutes from time with a deflected free-kick.

Lyon, French champions four years running, now have five wins and a draw from their opening six league games, their best start for five seasons. Coach Gérard Houllier said: "It was an important victory against contenders for our crown who are now nine points behind."

Cris is Houllier's only injury concern after he left the pitch against Monaco with a suspected bruised knee ligament, with a scan to follow on Monday. Houllier added of Madrid: "The absence of [Zinedine] Zidane and Ronaldo is not totally good news as their team will be balanced more towards defence, especially away from home."

Real Madrid CF 2-3 RC Celta de Vigo

Madrid suffered defeat in their opening home game of the season, losing to newly-promoted Celta. Madrid were 1-0 down by the eighth minute when Fernando Baiano's far-post header bounced off the bar for Pedro Contreras to stroke the ball in from close range. The home team were back on level terms on 36 minutes from Ronaldo's penalty following a foul on Julio Baptista.

Baptista put Madrid in front on the cusp of half-time, heading in Iván Helguera's sweeping centre, but within seconds, Celta had levelled as a direct result of Francisco Pavón's handball. Iker Casillas, playing his 200th game, brilliantly kept out Néstor Cannobio's penalty but the ball landed sweetly for Antonio Núñez to head in against his former club. Celta struck an unusual winner on 76 minutes when Cannobio's fierce strike ricocheted off the bar and, according to the assistant referee, over the line.

Madrid coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo said: "Losing this game hurts but looking at it positively, it has been a lesson that we should learn from. We did not play well, conceded an early goal and following that, the situation did not develop as we had anticipated. It's not been a good week for us and perhaps the absence of players for international duty has contributed."

Luxemburgo, who is missing Ronaldo on Tuesday due to suspension, was without Zidane, out for three weeks recovering from a groin strain suffered for France against the Republic of Ireland. The Madrid coach deployed Guti in his place while new signing Robinho started, confining Raúl González, who has a back problem, to the bench. Latest signing Sergio Ramos made an appearance at the start of the second half, replacing Pavón, who injured his toe, in central defence while David Beckham was forced out of the match on 80 minutes after taking a knock to his right knee.

Raúl, who is one goal short of 50 in the Champions League, scored for Spain in the 1-1 draw with Serbia and Montenegro in midweek, with Míchel Salgado and Casillas also figuring but Ramos omitted. While Beckham might have been ruing England's 1-0 defeat by Northern Ireland, Thomas Gravesen was celebrating as Denmark overcame Georgia 6-1.

Olympiacos CFP 5-0 Panionios NFC

Olympiacos cruised to victory against Panionios, their eleventh home win in a row against that opposition. Panionios have not won so much as a friendly since July, and the reigning champions went ahead through man

of the match Pantelis Kafes in the 24th minute from close range. The midfield player was to set up the remaining four goals, starting just after the break when his cross from the right was headed in by Ieroklis Stoltidis.

Eight minutes later, Kafes found Athanassios Kostoulas, whose header made it 3-0. In the 58th minute, Kafes laid the ball into the path of Ioannis Taralidis to score with a powerful shot. Eight minutes later, Kafes's effort found its way to Haruna Babangida, who completed the scoring in front of an empty Karaiskaki stadium, Olympiacos in the penultimate game of a stadium ban due to crowd trouble last season. They have won both their games this season, having previously defeated Panathinaikos FC 2-0.

Home coach Trond Sollied decided to rest Rivaldo to ensure he recovers from a groin injury in time to face Rosenborg, and Yaya Touré, who arrived late on Thursday from international duty with the Ivory Coast, and missed several training sessions. Rivaldo's absence allowed Kafes to start, as he is not usually a part of the Norwegian coach's 4-3-3 scheme. Mihalis Kapsis complained of pain in his left thigh muscle and was sidelined as a precaution, allowing Taralidis to step in.

Viking FK 3-2 Rosenborg BK

Rosenborg remained in relegation trouble in the Norwegian after letting slip a two-goal lead against Viking FK to lose 3-2. Two Thorstein Helstad strikes in the first 35 minutes seemed to have secured Rosenborg's first league points in five matches, but Egil Østenstad swiftly pulled one back almost immediately and, Allan Gaarde and Toni Nhleko turned the game in the final ten minutes.

"We tired at the end, and Viking took advantage of that," said Rosenborg coach Per-Mathias Høgmo, whose club's struggles are in stark contrast to their run of 13 straight championships which has ended with a dramatic bump.

At Olympiacos, Rosenborg are expected to be without defenders Christer Basma, Robbie Russell and Miika Koppinen through injury. Goalkeeper Espen Johnsen is also a doubt with a knee problem. He was on the bench against Viking.

Competition overview Competition Overview How the UEFA Champions League works…

The UEFA Champions League is UEFA's most prestigious club competition. It was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its format and name were changed in 1992.

Real Madrid CF have been the most successful side in the UEFA Champions League, winning the competition three times. They are also the most successful side overall with nine triumphs, followed by six for AC Milan and five for current champions Liverpool FC.

The Champions League is open to each national association's domestic champions, as well as clubs who finish just behind them in their respective domestic championship. The number of clubs that can be entered by an association and their entry point in the competition depends on the association’s position in UEFA's coefficient ranking list.

Since its inception in 1992/93, the Champions League has continued to evolve, maintaining a mixture of round- robin group matches as well as its traditional knockout format. The current format was introduced in 2003/04. After three qualifying rounds, 32 teams contest the group stage, divided into eight groups of four. The group winners and runners-up advance to the knockout stage, the eight third-placed teams move into the UEFA Cup third round, and the eight fourth-placed teams are eliminated.

A draw determines who each of the 16 clubs will play in the first knockout stage, with ties decided over two matches on a home and away basis. The club that scores the greater aggregate of goals advances, or in the event of both teams scoring the same number of goals, the team which scores more away goals.

If the away-goals rule proves inconclusive, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes is played after the second match. If during extra time both teams score the same number of goals, away goals count double (ie the visiting team advances). If no goals are scored during extra time, the winner is decided by penalty kicks. The two teams that advance from the knockout round contest the final, held as a single match in May.

The European Champion Clubs' Cup was a purely knockout competition until the format was changed in 1992/93 with the inception of the Champions League. That year the competition began with three knockout rounds with the winners advancing to a group stage involving two sets of four clubs playing home and away. The two group winners contested the final. A similar format was used the following season, with the addition of a two-legged semi-final stage involving the top two clubs from both groups.

The competition expanded further for the 1994/95 season with one preliminary round required before the clubs divided into four groups of four clubs. The top two clubs in each group advanced to the knockout stage, which this time began at the quarter-final stage. The 1997/98 season saw another phase of expansion. Two qualifying rounds were introduced and the group stage expanded to six groups of four clubs each. The six group winners and the two best runners-up advanced to the knockout stages.

An additional qualifying round was introduced for the 1999/2000 season to generate two group stages, firstly with 32 teams - eight groups of four - who played six matches apiece to reduce the competition to 16 teams for the second group stage, with the eight third-placed teams moving to the UEFA Cup third round. At the end of the second group stage, eight teams remained to contest the knockout stage.

Notices Out-of-competition tests welcomed Clubs taking part in the UEFA Champions League this season have reacted positively to UEFA's decision to introduce out-of-competition doping controls.

Full details The 32 sides setting out in the group stage of European club football's most prestigious tournament later this month have been supplied with full details of the out-of-competition programme and have been appraised of how they will be expected to co-operate in its implementation.

Weekly whereabouts All players registered for the Champions League will become part of the 2005/06 UEFA Out-of-Competition Pool. The players will remain in this pool until their team is eliminated. Clubs will also provide UEFA with weekly reports of the whereabouts of their players.

UEFA DCOs Under the out-of-competition procedure, UEFA Doping Control Officers (DCOs) will be responsible for collecting samples, and will come unannounced to a location designated by the club. Up to ten players can be tested. UEFA's anti-doping panel may decide to nominate the players to be tested, or instruct the DCO to conduct a draw.

Reporting regulations Drawn players who are not present will have 60 minutes to report to the doping control location – should a player drawn for testing not report to the doping control location, the DCO will submit a missed test report to UEFA.

Information system "Out-of-competition testing is part of the requirements from the World Anti-Doping Code," said Marc Vouillamoz, head of the UEFA anti-doping unit. "We have put in place a whereabouts information system which can be implemented at team level. The launch of the out-of-competition testing programme will increase the deterrence factor."

Club sessions Clubs are being asked to organise information sessions for all players concerned to advise them of their responsibilities, and each player is being briefed about UEFA's out-of-competition testing directives.

Anti-doping activities The move is part of UEFA's reinforcement of its anti-doping activities, which has seen an increase in the number of drugs tests in its tournaments, greater financial outlay in the sector, the creation of an anti-doping unit within the UEFA administration, as well as an expert anti-doping panel and an education programme aimed at the broad spectrum of the European football community.

Anti-doping programme Associations and clubs taking part in UEFA competitions are being asked to assist UEFA in implementing the anti-doping scheme. Under UEFA's new anti-doping regulations, which came into force on 1 June, these doping controls may include blood and/or urine samples.
