Arranged chrono- logically, it begins with the precursor revolutions in the French Caribbean islands and the takeover of Louisiana by the United States. The heart of the catalogue covers the revolutions in South and Central America between 1806 and the 1830s.     Los himnos nacionales. Música y letras en creaciones cargadas de significado Por Juan María Veniard, para la Academia del Plata. Trabajo leído en sesión ordinaria del 4 de octubre de 2017. Un himno nacional es una composición musical con o sin letra entonada, destinada a lograr por parte de un pueblo adhesión a su propio Estado. Es también un símbolo que lo representa institucionalmente ante el concierto de las naciones como los otros símbolos que lo distinguen, la bandera y el escudo patrio, que pueden presentar elementos simbólicos y tener antigua tradición. El himno nacional consta, generalmente, de letra, la cual muchas veces está inflamada de patriotismo, pero la música es de características internacionalistas, esto es: música académica occidental –en cuanto a su estructura y lenguaje– que no reconoce fronteras. Ciertamente, en algunos, se percibe un origen, como puede ser germánico, francés o italiano, del mismo modo que se lo percibe en la música académica respectiva. La letra, en versos rimados, es obligadamente en el idioma nacional. En la época en que fueron creados estos himnos, la letra se constituyó en el elemento fundamental y la música tuvo un carácter subsidiario. Pero, con el tiempo, la música fue tomando relevancia. La letra pudo presentar variadas finalidades: didáctica, presentando los valores que deben adornar al individuo nacional; dogmática: inflamando al pueblo amor a la patria, al rey o al sistema político; histórica, recordando los hechos sobresalientes que la adornan; y aun geopolítica, señalando los términos de la nación. De modo que muchas veces es heroica y puede presentar cierta agresividad para con supuesto enemigo (en nuestro himno: “el vil invasor…”).
