Editors' Message: If everyone in the school could con tribute one hour of work towards the yearbook, it could be finished in a week. But with ten people, it takes a while. (to say the least). A lot of work has gone into this yearbook and we hope that everyone will enjoy it. It's your yearbook, we made it for you, not for us. Special thanks to all those who have contributed and given help to this year's staff. Thanks.

Others are cu rious what it would feel like to stand in front of people and give an important speech. Certainly they won der if they could convince people through speech. This is one of our concerns. There are many different topics used for competition in speech team. Saturdays are used for the meets at other schools. Editor Mike Jells Co-Editor Judy Smetana

Composed of about twenty-five aspiring journalists, THE BRIDGE is a bi-monthly publication dedicated to improve communication between students and faculty. The newspaper is supervised by Mr. Brent Haas, although almost entirely runned by the staff itself. M. C. Jolls is Editor-in-Chief. He is aided by Co-Editor, Judy Smetana and the editors of the New, Feature, Spor ta, and Production Departments: Michael Drey, Henry Bahr, Bob Hall, and Gloria Jakopchek. The philosophy of THE BRIDGE is reflected in the title itself. Using a somewhat informal approach toward the complexities of high school living, the paper attempts to present the view of all competent parties on whatever issue is presently at hand. Hopefully this will facilitate increased cooperation and understanding between op posing factions. The philosophy seems to have resulted in a certain amount of success. Both the size and circulation of THE BRI OGE has increased practically with each edition. It is the staff's heart felt ambition that the philosophy of THE BRIDGE here outlined, is maintained by future newsfolk, for the betterment and general well-being of the students here in the friendly confines of We-Go High.

53 GRAPPLER POWER!

The varsity wrestlers started off an exciting season with the trio of Scott VA RSITY Dierking, Pete Dombrowski , and We-Go 33 Wheaton Central 12 Wayne James going undefeated 56 Kaneland 0 through dual meet action. Led by this 36 West Aurora 12 Scott Dierking year's captains Dierking, Dombrowski, 33 Plainfield 12 33 Dixon 17 Hinsdale Tournament - and Spohn , the Wildcats posted a 15:. 2 ls 22 Oswego 24 season , losing only to Oswego and Little 7 Conference 17 Naperville 26 Districts - 1st 52 Batavia 6 Naperville. Another first for Wildcat Sectional - 1st 40 Glenbard North 9 fans were two shutout victor ies State Champion - 185 lbs. 31 Geneva 18 (3 pins of 4 wins) against Kaneland (56-0), and Glenbard 36 Wheaton North 12 undefeated for 1972-73 42 Cary Grove 6 (60-0). They captured the first place eason: 25-0 60 Glenbard South 0 trophy at the challenging Hinsda le 26 Sycamore 19 Holiday Tournament. Conference 35 Libertyville 14 tournament action saw Mike Cox, 28 Palatine 16 St. Francis 12 Scott Dierking, Dan Jeffery, Pete 47 Hinsdale Tournament - 1st Dombrowski, and Wayne James with Sectionals - 3rd firsts, and winning the Little Seven State Wrestling Tournament - 9th Conference wrestling trophy for the s~cond year straight. Districts saw the Wildcats take a very close third with five individual first by Tony Cortez, Mike Cox, Scott Dierking, Pete Dombrowski , and Wayne James and a second by Dan Jeffery. At Sectionals, Tony Cortez took a fourth after losing to 145 lb. state champ Doug Chir i co of Naperville. Scott Dierking proceeded to take a first at West Leyden Sectionals and was the Wildcats line representative downstate at the University of , Chambana, where he captured a first place victory at 185 lbs., scoring the only pin in the finals (1 :40), to defeat previously unbeaten Jerry Wash ington of Thorwood, for West Chicago's plac ing ninth in the IHSA wrestling tourna ment. He was cheered on by a record number of West Chicago fans who at tended the tournament and celebrated the victory afterwards. The " Most Valuable Wrestler" award went to Scott Dierking, and the " Most Improved" was Wayne James. Tri-cap tains for next year are Tony Cortez, Tom Truitt, and Pete Norman. 54 GRAPPLER POWER Grappler fever definitely struck West Chi cago this year as wrestling, after a steady uphill climb, became the leading winter sport. It became a matter of time to get to the meets early enough to get a good seat. Enthusiastic fans filled pep buses for almost every away meet. Many people attended Dis tricts and Sectionals. The state wrestling tournament takes the place of a class trip since just at Ramada Inn in Champaign alone, ten rooms were taken by West Chica go. Over 100 juniors and seniors alone filled an entire section in the enormous Assembly Hall at the U of I. The Wildcats have gained a tough name in wrestling throughout Illinois and mean to keep it. West Chicago wrestling fans will be behind them all the way.

" West Chicago must have the biggest mouths here. We could hear you yel ling from the other side of Assembly Hall and it holds 20,000 people." fan from Reavis Oak Lawn

55 Pep Club Although the annual Pep Club talent show was canceled due to a shortage of time, Pep Club still had the tedious job of maintaining buses for the away games, skits for the pep assemblies, and Homecoming Coronation . This year the executive board consisted of President Dawn Davis, Vice-President Dottie Cole, Secretary Colleen Carey, and Treasurer Becky Zarate. This year's advisor was Miss Potsee. Varsity

The Varsity Club is composed of Sophomore, Junior, and Senior boys who have earned a Varsity letter or award. The goals of this club, headed by Mr. Kimery, are to inspire school spirit, to set standards for good sportsman ship, and to lend support to all efforts of the school. The successful record for 1973 helped to secure these goals. The football season boasts winning the first place conference. 1973 also proved to be a successful year in Wrestling. While the expec tations in basketball were not realized, good sportsmanship prevailed as a positive goal for not only prospective members but the entire school body.

The A Capella Choir is made up of sixty students this year. The Choir also consists of Madrigals and some small er ensembles. Preparation for each concert and assembly begins months in advance. The year started with the annual Veteran's Day Assembly and moved to the Christmas sea son. The choir once again sent Christmas cheer to the community and sang at General Mills on December 14 and also carolled in town. The Christmas Vespers Concert was performed December 17 and was highlighted by " A Christ mas Song" in which the students showed their talents in ensemble~ and solos. Other performances included in the year's schedule were the Spring Concert on May 29. After Christmas Vacation the choir spent their time preparing for the state-wide competition. This year the choirs sent eight ensembles and solos, plus the entire organization . And even during this preparation, the choir was preparing for Baccalaureate and the Fox Valley Music Festival. Choir, again had a busy, but fulfilling year.

Approximately 100 students from Community High School District 94, West Chicago, per formed in 55 contest events. They accumulated a total of 152 contest points for their school. State-wide results of these contests will not be made public until completion of the I.H.S.A. Organization Music Contest, April 14. The 1972-73 school musical. THE WIZARD OF OZ, proved to be a great success in many ways. It was the first play to receive a full house every night, with an estimated two hundred and fifty turned away. The imaginative sets, cos tuming, directing, music, and special effects created a truly memorable experience for everyone associated with the production. Director. Mrs. Marge Macey, and musical director, Mr. Gen~ Haney, attempted to depict a play very different from the well-known movie version of THE WIZARD OF OZ. The traditional strains of · Somewhere Over the Rainbow," "Were Off to See the Wiza rd," and "Di ngDong the Witch is Dead" were included: but other songs, such as "Evening Star." "The Jitterbug," and "The Funeral March of the Mar ionettes" helped to create a unique show. Other changes included the absence of Toto, a special dance by jitterbugs, which replaced the meadow scene, extra witches and ghouls instead of flying monkeys, and finally, a blob mons ter depicting the wonderful wizard. The costumes, makeup, and sets were especially de signed to give a coloring-book effect. Miss Cathy Svec creat ed sets with objects outlined in large black lines. The cos tumes and makeup, accented in dark colors completed this simple, but effective pattern. Steve Borchers served as a very competent student director and stage manager. Choreography was handled by Gini Marziani. Over one hundred players were involved in the chorus. cast. orchestra, and crews. Tedious hours of rehearsal re sulted in an unusual. exciting, and truly unforgettable ver sion of Wego's THE WIZARD OF OZ.

On May 11, 1973, three student directed plays were pre sented. After careful selection, the plays were chosen and cast. A successful production occured after only fifteen rehearsals. Jim Nixon directed " A Walk in Dark Places." The play involved several plots and subplots dealing with the mixed fee lings of a mother after losing her baby and husband. Cast for the play was Kathy Faesen as Helen , Rose luro as Mrs. Henry, Debbie Teal as Dr. Palmer and Carolyn Riske as Mrs. Levine . Kevin Lambe chose a comedy, " The Ledge, Ledger and .. Legend." The plot consisted of J.M. (Beth Wampole) trying to persuade Pete (Mike Panzella) not to jump off the ledge. The last play, "The Uncertain Samaritan," was directed by Leise Bender. The cast consisted of three underclass men - Chuck Feeny, Sue Ashmont, and Linda Potts. The conflict concerned the unwillingness of a woman to help a hurt man until finally she, herself, gets hurt, and the subse Kathy Faeson and Rose luro fight it out in quent arrival of a little girl whose relief can be expressed "A Walk in Dark Places ." only with momentary comfort.
