Reducing energy consumption and emissions is a continuous challenge for the asphalt industry. Previous studies have focused on the reduction of emissions without characterizing their composition, and detailed characterization of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in asphalt fumes is scarce. This communication describes the characterization and evaluation of VOCs and SVOCs from asphalt mixtures prepared at lower production temperatures using natural zeolite; in some cases, reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) was used. -

1 THE RIMINI PROTOCOL an Oil Depletion Protocol ~ Heading Off Economic Chaos and Political Conflict During the Second Half of the Age of Oil As proposed at the 2003 Pio Manzu Conference, and to be the central theme of the next Pio Manzu Conference, Rimini, Italy on October 28-30, 2005 2 INTRODUCTION Soaring oil prices have drawn attention to the issue of the relative supply and demand for crude oil, which is the World’s premier fuel, having a central place in the modern economy. Knowledge of petroleum geology has made great advances in recent years, such that the conditions under which this resource was formed in Nature are now well understood. In fact, it transpires that the bulk of the World’s current production comes from deposits formed in two brief and exceptional epochs, 90 and 150 million years ago. This fact alone tells us that oil is a finite resource, which in turn means that it is subject to depletion. People ask: Are we running out of oil ? The simple answer is: Yes, we started doing that when we produced the first barrel. But Running Out is not the main issue as the resource will not be finally exhausted for very many years. The much more relevant question is: When will production reach a peak and begin to decline? Depletion: Growth, Peak and Decline Much debate and study has focused on the calculation of the date of peak, but this too misses the main point. It is not an isolated or pronounced peak but merely the highest point on a long and gentle production curve. -
Husky Energy and BP Announce Integrated Oil Sands Joint Development
December 5, 2007 For immediate release Husky Energy and BP Announce Integrated Oil Sands Joint Development CALGARY, Alberta – Husky Energy Inc is pleased to announce that an agreement has been reached with BP to create an integrated, North American oil sands business consisting of pre-eminent upstream and downstream assets. The development will be comprised of two joint 50/50 partnerships, a Canadian oil sands partnership to be operated by Husky and a U.S. refining LLC to be operated by BP. Husky and BP will each contribute assets of equal value to the business. Husky will contribute its Sunrise asset located in the Athabasca oil sands in northeast Alberta, Canada and BP will contribute its Toledo refinery located in Ohio, USA. The transaction, which is subject to the execution of final definitive agreements and regulatory approval, is expected to close in the first quarter of 2008 and with effective date January 1, 2008. "This transaction completes Husky’s Sunrise Oil Sands total integration with respect to upstream and downstream solutions," said Mr. John C.S. Lau, President & Chief Executive Officer of Husky Energy Inc. “Husky is extremely pleased to be partnering with BP, a world class global E & P and Refining company. The joint venture will provide better monitoring of project execution, costs and completion timing for this mega project development.” “Toledo and Sunrise are excellent assets. BP’s move into oil sands with Husky is an opportunity to build a strategic, material position and the huge potential of Sunrise is the ideal entry point for BP into Canadian oil sands.” said Tony Hayward, BP’s group chief executive. -

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Low oil prices continue to hamper oil shale development around the world. Although new production capacity in Estonia and China has come online recently, efforts in other places are on indefinite hiatus or are well behind schedule relative to what was anticipated just a few years ago. The current status remains in flux, and recent developments in conventional and unconventional crude oil plays in the United States and elsewhere indicate this will not change anytime soon. Oil shale continues to be mined processed in China and Brazil, but production updates for 2016 were not available as of the preparation of this report. In Estonia, Eesti Energia (Enefit) continued development of their co-generation Auvere power plant that is designed to utilize both oil shale and other fuel sources (wood chips, peat, gas). -

After working for Industry for five years, he began his involvement with oil shale in 1948 when he joined the U.S. Bureau of Mines and was assigned to Rifle, Colorado, to work at Anvil Points. During the middle fifties, he was assigned to the Atomic Energy Com mission to study the extraction of ura nium from the Chattanooga Shales in Tennessee. He became Research Director of the U.S. Bureau ofMines in 1967 and served in this capacity until he retired in 1979. During these years his involvement with oil shale intensified.
