“Pin the Macho on the Man”: Mediations of Gay Male Masculinity in the Body Politic, 1971-1987 “Pin the Macho on the Man”: Mediations of Gay Male Masculinity in The Body Politic, 1971-1987 by Nicholas Andrew Hrynyk A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario 2018 Nicholas Andrew Hrynyk ii Abstract As the largest Canadian gay and lesbian newspaper from 1971 to 1987, The Body Politic not only shaped the political landscape of gay liberation but also mediated understandings and assumptions around gay male masculinity. The editorial collective behind The Body Politic addressed masculinity in myriad ways, sometimes directly in editorials on gender and sexuality, but more often indirectly as part of discussions around race, desire, the body, space, and HIV/AIDS. In doing so, The Body Politic served an important role in mediating the gendered, racial, sexual, and spatial politics of desire and identity in Toronto’s gay male community. The newspaper was an important interactive platform for collective members and readers alike to explore and express apprehensions around heteronormative, ableist, and racial influences on gay male masculinity as a performative style. This dissertation thematically examines masculinity in The Body Politic. Each chapter focuses on a different topic: pornography and visual culture, the hypersexualized white able-bodied “macho clone,” the navigation of space and place, the inscription of colonial values of effeminancy or hypermasculinity on racialized bodies, and the marginalization of disabled bodies and bodies debilitated by HIV/AIDS that did not “perform” a sexualized idea of masculinity. By visualizing gay masculinity in particular and often contradictory ways, The Body Politic reinforced and challenged the self- regulation of hegemonic masculinity in gay male culture. My analysis of The Body Politic reveals that not only were the aesthetics of gay male masculinity fundamental to the politics of desire and liberation within the gay male community, but that the newspaper played an important part in legitimizing and destabilizing these desires. iii This dissertation is dedicated to my late grandfather, William Donald Tape. He was—and remains—an inspiring figure in my life. He taught me a great deal about the importance of hard work, honesty, compassion, and perseverance. Print media served as a significant catalyst in shaping this burgeoning culture. While lesbian and gay periodicals have been included in histories of gay liberation, there has been little consideration of their role as cultural texts, particularly in mediating understandings of gender and sexuality in gay and lesbian communities. Toronto’s The Body Politic, referred to hereafter as TBP, was particularly influential in the development, permeation, and mediation of how sexuality, gender and more specifically, masculinity, were stylized on gay male bodies in Toronto’s gay male community during its publication. As Canada’s foremost lesbian and gay monthly newspaper from 1971 until 1987, TBP was more than a lesbian and gay political newspaper. It was home to discussions, debates, and deeper questions about gender, sexuality, race, the body, disability, and HIV/AIDS in Toronto’s gay community, particularly amongst its middle-class

Topps Chewing Gum, Judge Jerome Frank first articulated the modern right of publicity as a transferable intellectual property right. The right of publicity has since been seen to protect the strictly commercial value of one’s “persona”—the Latin-derived word meaning the mask of an actor. Why might Judge Frank have been motivated to fashion a transferable right in the monetary value of one’s public persona distinct from the psychic harm to feelings, emotions, and dignity rooted in the individual and protected under the rubric of privacy? Judge Frank was a leading figure in the American legal realist movement known for his unique and controversial “psychoanalysis of certain legal traditions” through influential books including Law and the Modern Mind. His work drew heavily on the ideas of psychoanalytic thinkers, like Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, to describe the distorting effects of unconscious wishes and fantasies on the decision-making process of legal actors and judges.

Methods: A total of 424 MSM (Mean age 35.64, SD=10.05) recruited through informal social networks and the Internet participated in this study. Most participants were single and self-identified as gay (66.7%). Participants were asked to recall their sexual experiences while visiting a bathhouse for sexual purposes. Results: 9.4% (n=40) of participants reported being HIV positive and approximately 14.5% (n=62) reported not knowing their status. MSM visited the bathhouses 1.76 times per month (SD=2.12) and involved themselves with 3 men (on average) per each visit. Statistically significant differences between having sex with or without a condom were found (p<0.001) reflect that risky behavior occurs (95% CI). Risk practices involving fluid exchange (condom- less practices) were also reported.

    Chen 1 Chapter One Introduction My thesis is aimed at investigating how gay sauna patrons can freely perform a wide range of dissident sexuality and how the spatiality of sauna impinges impact on gay patrons’ sexual identities and erotic expressions. Gay saunas, as a part of queer landscapes, have constantly generated multiple meanings and made undeniable influences on gay men’s sexuality and personal lives. They provide gay men with erotic site/sight to explore sexuality and to expand their network and communities. In particular, they seem to offer an escape from various oppressive apparatuses of social and sexual lives in real world. My analysis on the performance in gay sauna will focus on: how sexual interactions between gay patrons are structured and conducted; how the setting functions to enhance sexual communications, negotiations and encounters; what strategies are taken by patrons to satisfy their sexual needs. In my investigations, I will apply Richard Schechner’s theories of performance and Victor Turner’s theories of ritual. These theories allow me to explain the rules and codes during the ritual process in gay saunas, which intrigue bodily communication between the clients as performers and spectators. I intend to elaborate the interrelationship of space, performers, spectators and the elements that determine the process of a ritual performance. Furthermore, by employing Turner’s theory of “liminality” and Chen 2 “communitas,” I aim to investigate the political meanings of the ritual-like sex performance which subverts the basic hetero-sexual normative structure with alternative sexual activities. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com As a genre, bisexual pornography began in earnest during the mid-1980s, shortly after the popularization of the concept of a bisexual identity during the previous decade. While the sexological concept of bisexuality may be defined simply as an erotic or romantic attraction to both sexes, within the pornography industry it has taken on a more circumscribed meaning: films that feature some type of male homosexual activity in addition to the usual heterosexual and all-female scenes. Examples of same-sex activity mixed with heterosexual coupling are found as early as Etruscan tomb paintings. In the modern era scenes of women together are found in pornography from its beginnings in nineteenth-century photography and the stag films of the early twentieth century--generally in conjunction with additional scenes of heterosexual intercourse. During pornography's growth era in the 1970s and 1980s sexual activity between two women became an expected component of the content of mainstream pornographic film and video, being seen in such classics as Deep Throat and Behind the Green Door. However, these images were clearly designed for consumption by heterosexual male viewers. Male homosexual imagery was still off-limits outside of gay pornography. Partly as a result of the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 1970s, less restrictive notions of sexual identity began surfacing. By the late 1970s readers' letters submitted to Penthouse and Penthouse Forum--relating various sexual escapades--began to include occasional forays into male bisexuality.

    PLAYING BY PORNOGRAPHY'S RULES: THE REGULATION OF SEXUAL EXPRESSION DAVID COLEt INTRODUCTION Sometimes a sentence is worth a thousand words. In 1964, as the Supreme Court stumbled toward a constitutional approach to obscenity, Justice Potter Stewart suggested that only "hard-core pornography" should be suppressed.' He admitted that the category may be incapable of "intelligibl[e]" definition, but 2 nonetheless confidently asserted, "I know it when I see it." Justice Stewart's sentence captures the essence of the Court's sexual expression jurisprudence, which rests more on the assertion of distinctions than on reasoned analysis. For many years, the Court, unable to agree upon a doctrinal framework for obscenity regulation, simply ruled by per curiam judgments, without offering any explanation for what it was doing.' When the Court did attempt to explain its actions, some suggested that it would have been better off maintaining its silence.' The Court has now put forward a set of doctrinal "rules" that in the end do little more than obscure what is basically Stewart's intuitive approach.
