THE RADAR WAR by Gerhard Hepcke Translated into English by Hannah Liebmann Forward The backbone of any military operation is the Army. However for an international war, a Navy is essential for the security of the sea and for the resupply of land operations. Both services can only be successful if the Air Force has control over the skies in the areas in which they operate. In the WWI the Air Force had a minor role. Telecommunications was developed during this time and in a few cases it played a decisive role. In WWII radar was able to find and locate the enemy and navigation systems existed that allowed aircraft to operate over friendly and enemy territory without visual aids over long range. This development took place at a breath taking speed from the Ultra High Frequency, UHF to the centimeter wave length. The decisive advantage and superiority for the Air Force or the Navy depended on who had the better radar and UHF technology. 0.0 Aviation Radio and Radar Technology Before World War II From the very beginning radar technology was of great importance for aviation. In spite of this fact, the radar equipment of airplanes before World War II was rather modest compared with the progress achieved during the war. 1.0 Long-Wave to Short-Wave Radiotelegraphy In the beginning, when communication took place only via telegraphy, long- and short-wave transmitting and receiving radios were used. 2.0 VHF Radiotelephony Later VHF radios were added, which made communication without trained radio operators possible. 3.0 On-Board Direction Finding A loop antenna served as a navigational aid for airplanes. -

(Signature) ……………………………………………………………………………… 1 Abstract There was no special governmental partnership between Britain and America during the Second World War in atomic affairs. A recalibration is required that updates and amends the existing historiography in this respect. The wartime atomic relations of those countries were cooperative at the level of science and resources, but rarely that of the state. As soon as it became apparent that fission weaponry would be the main basis of future military power, America decided to gain exclusive control over the weapon. Britain could not replicate American resources and no assistance was offered to it by its conventional ally. America then created its own, closed, nuclear system and well before the 1946 Atomic Energy Act, the event which is typically seen by historians as the explanation of the fracturing of wartime atomic relations. Immediately after 1945 there was insufficient systemic force to create change in the consistent American policy of atomic monopoly. As fusion bombs introduced a new magnitude of risk, and as the nuclear world expanded and deepened, the systemic pressures grew. -

The P-51 Mustang 1 The Inspiration, Design and Legacy Behind the P-51 Mustang Matthew Hundt English 11 Ms. Morris Lake Mills High School February 25, 2013 The P-51 Mustang 2 The Inspiration, Design, and Legacy Behind the P-51 Mustang The year is 1940. Britain’s Royal Air Force (RAF), and later the American Army Air Force (AAF), were in dire need of a long-range escort fighter that would be capable of fending off the Luftwaffe, which “was a potent force” (Ludwig, 2003, p.94). In his 1982 work, Jablonski concluded that the only way for bombers to survive the hazardous trip to and from Germany was to have fighter escort that could accompany them round trip (p. 103). The response to that limitation was the P-51 Mustang, which became a major factor in the Allies’ triumph in the air war in the European Theater of Operations (ETO). During World War II, the British, due to extreme shortages of fighter aircraft, contacted North American Aviation (NAA), an American aircraft company, and asked them to design and subsequently manufacture an innovative fighter plane that would be superior to all German opposition. The ensuing plane, the P-51 Mustang, became the most revered and feared escort fighter of the war because of its extensive range, impressive aerodynamics that afforded maneuverability and speed, and the deadly armament it possessed (Jablonski, 1982, p. 97). The Mustang may be the most important and innovative fighter plane in history due to its impeccable combat record and sleek design. After France had been successfully defeated by Nazi Germany, the British realized that they needed to strengthen defense measures. -

Scientists, Statesmen and War: the Case of the Scientific Advisory Committee
James Goodchild Ex Historia 46 James Goodchild 1 University of Exeter Scientists, Statesmen and War: The Case of the Scientific Advisory Committee. The now extensive historiography of the Second World War confirms with fascinating certainty that twentieth-century total technological warfare forced developed nation states to marry their statesmen to their scientists. While the long-term marriage itself proved a near cataclysmic affair, the wedding too had many moments of turbulence. This article examines one particular event in twentieth-century British history of scientific and technological institutionalisation. Piecing together previously unconnected primary evidence, this article re-interprets the uneasy beginnings of the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) to the War Cabinet established in October 1940. This article further demonstrates that even in an emergency so immense as modern war, science and politics continued to remain as awkward bedfellows. It was during the First World War that the British Government began to appreciate the value of a permanent civil partnership developing between scientists and the state. From the high pinnacles of David Lloyd George’s ‘Garden Suburbs’ – ideas men attached to the Cabinet – down to the nitty-gritty of keeping common men alive through the work of the Medical Research Committee, science began to permeate the Whitehall corridors of power in an unprecedented fashion essentially as a consequence of total war. 2 This scientific incursion was 1 James Goodchild’s ([email protected] ) academic interests are the inter-relations between twentieth-century war, science and technology, and the British state and society. PURPOSE. Because aerobatic flying subjects pilots to gravitational effects (G's) that can impair their ability to safely operate the aircraft, pilots who engage in aerobatics, or those who would take up such activity, should understand G's and some of their physiological effects. This circular provides background information on G's, their effect on the human body, and their role in safe flying. Suggestions are offered for avoiding problems caused by accelerations encountered in aerobatic maneuvers. 2. BACKGROUND. Aerobatic flying demands the best of both aircraft and pilot. The aircraft must be highly maneuverable, yet tolerant of G-loads. The pilot must possess skill and physiological stamina. He or she must be daring, yet mindful of the aircraft's limitations as well as his or her own. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Advisory Circular No. 91-48, "Acrobatics-Precision Flying with a Purpose," dated June 29, 1977, discusses some of the airworthiness and operational aspects of aerobatics, but does not consider biomedical factors. The most important of these biomedical factors is the pilot's response to accelerations (or G-loading). The major physiological effects of G-loaaing vary from reduced vision to loss of consciousness. The pilot who understands these effects will be better able to cope with them so that he or she can continue the sport of aerobatic flying. J. -

USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum Additional Historic Information The Doolittle Raid (Hornet CV-8) Compiled and Written by Museum Historian Bob Fish AMERICA STRIKES BACK The Doolittle Raid of April 18, 1942 was the first U.S. air raid to strike the Japanese home islands during WWII. The mission is notable in that it was the only operation in which U.S. Army Air Forces bombers were launched from an aircraft carrier into combat. The raid demonstrated how vulnerable the Japanese home islands were to air attack just four months after their surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. While the damage inflicted was slight, the raid significantly boosted American morale while setting in motion a chain of Japanese military events that were disastrous for their long-term war effort. Planning & Preparation Immediately after the Pearl Harbor attack, President Roosevelt tasked senior U.S. military commanders with finding a suitable response to assuage the public outrage. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a difficult assignment. The Army Air Forces had no bases in Asia close enough to allow their bombers to attack Japan. At the same time, the Navy had no airplanes with the range and munitions capacity to do meaningful damage without risking the few ships left in the Pacific Fleet. In early January of 1942, Captain Francis Low1, a submariner on CNO Admiral Ernest King’s staff, visited Norfolk, VA to review the Navy’s newest aircraft carrier, USS Hornet CV-8. During this visit, he realized that Army medium-range bombers might be successfully launched from an aircraft carrier. -

McHugh served as Cincinnati's oral historian for "one of America's biggest gambles"5 of World War II, the now legendary Doolittle Raid on Japan. Rogers 60th House District Sponsor Testimony - House Bill 687 Chairman Green, Vice Chair Patton, Ranking Member Sheehy, and members of the House Transportation and Public Safety Committee. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to testify today in support of House Bill 687, legislation that would honor one of our Nations most decorated World War II flying aces, by designating the bridge extending over the Grand River and into Fairport Harbor as the Colonel Donald Blakeslee Bridge. Col. Donald James Matthew Blakeslee was born in 1917 in Fairport Harbor, a small town of 3000 residents nestled along the Grand River and Lake Erie shorelines in my district in Lake County. As a young boy, Blakeslee became interested in flying after attending the Cleveland Air Races. In 1938 Blakeslee joined the Army Air Corps Reserve. In 1939, with the onset of World War II in the European Theater, the United States would remain on the sidelines for another 2 years. Eager to fight for the Allies, Blakeslee joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1939 and traveled to England. While serving with the No. 401 Squadron of the RCAF in the early stages of the war, Blakeslee would prove himself as a talented Spitfire pilot and a gifted flight leader, flying a large number of sorties over enemy territory and destroying or damaging multiple enemy aircraft. In August of 1942, Blakeslee became a flying “ace” after a destroying an aircraft during a raid in France. With the creation of the United States Army Air Force in 1942, Blakeslee decided to leave the RCAF and transfer back into an American unit.
