ISSN. 0972 - 8406 61 The NEHU Journal, Vol XII, No. 2, July - December 2014, pp. 61-76 Event, Memory and Lore: Anecdotal History of Partition in Assam BINAYAK DUTTA * Abstract Political history of Partition of India in 1947 is well-documented by historians. However, the grass root politics and and the ‘victim- hood’ of a number of communities affected by the Partition are still not fully explored. The scholarly moves to write alternative History based on individual memory and family experience, aided by the technological revolution have opened up multiple narratives of the partition of Assam and its aftermath. Here in northeast India the Partition is not just a History, but a lived story, which registers its presence in contemporary politics through songs, poems, rhymes and anecdotes related to transfer of power in Assam. These have remained hidden from mainstream partition scholarship. This paper seeks to attempt an anecdotal history of the partition in Assam and the Sylhet Referendum, which was a part of this Partition process . The White Author's Burden: Justifications of Empire in the Fiction of British India Abstract The White Author’s Burden: Justifications of Empire in the Fiction of British India identifies a transformation in Anglo-Indian literature by exploring various fictional works (including novels, short stories, and poems) written by British authors between 1800 and 1924. Before 1857 (the year of the widespread Indian Rebellions that challenged British rule), Anglo-Indian literature focused exclusively on British life in India. Interactions with Indians were minimal, if present at all. After this date, however, British authors began to portray India and Indians almost entirely in ways that justified their own rule. This shift in the literature suggests that the British felt a new need to justify their empire. This thesis focuses on three literary themes offered by British authors that served to legitimize British rule in India in the second half of the nineteenth century: (1) the state of Indian women; (2) the alleged rivalry between Hindus and Muslims; and (3) the perceived incompetence of educated Indians for political rule. -

Some consider it the first great war of independence, others a mere mutiny and some say it was a revolt against existing conditions. Whatever be the case, the most singular consequence for India’s army was how the British now viewed their armed forces in India. Whether the British ruled it as a trading company or as a nation, the use of force and military might was still necessary to occupy and subjugate the subcontinent. The Revolt of 1857 led to a re-organization of the Indian army and this article highlights some of the socio-economic and cultural impacts of this re-organization. The soldier is also a product of his socio-economic, cultural and political landscape. The recruitment of natives for the British Indian army on a large scale, their training in modern warfare methods, the salary and rewards given to native soldiers all had an impact on the environment where the soldiers came from, on Indian rulers who fielded armies on the battlefield, and on agrarian communities who ultimately shouldered the revenue burden for maintenance of armies. Salient Features Impacting Post-Mutiny Re-Organisation The events of the 1857 uprising all over India are well-documented. This article will discuss those which are pertinent to large scale re-organisation of political and military systems. -

EMAIL ID: [email protected], CONTACT NO: 7006530645 Abstract This paper tries to throw light on the intervention of British colonial power in Indian states during nineteenth and twentieth century and main focus of the work is on princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, which was one of the largest princely states in India along with Hyderabad and Mysore. The paper unreveals the motive and benefits behind indirect annexation and also obligations of princes to accept paramountcy. The indirect rule observed different degrees of interference and it was supposed to correct abuses in so called backward native states. Introduction After 1858, British abandoned their earlier policies of “ring fence” (1765- 1818) and “subordinate isolation” (1818-1858) and adopted new policy which laid stress on “non-annexation with the right of intervention” and it remained functional from 1858 till 1947. These un-annexed areas came to be known as Princely states. By intervention it means that government had right to intervene in the internal affairs of native states and set right administrative abuses. Michael Fisher opined that by this arrangement the colonial power was able to gain control over nominally sovereign states through a single British resident or political agent or just by giving advices to local princes.1 Indirect rule refers to the system of administration where states were directly ruled by native princes under the paramount power. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 ABSTRACT Prior to 194-7 approximately one-third of the Indian sub-continent was broken up into 655 Indian States which were ruled by princes of varying rank. In the process of consolidating their empire in India the British had, during the first half of the nineteenth century, deprived the princes of the power to conduct external relations with each other or with foreign powers. Internally the princes were theoretically independent but their sovereignty in this respect was in practice restricted by the paramountcy of the Imperial power. Many of the princes resented the manner in which the British used this paramountcy to justify intervening in their domestic affairs. During the nineteenth century the British had maintained the princes basically as an administrative convenience and as a source of revenue. -

1 PRINCELY GIFTS I. RAJAHS IN THE RAJ A. HOW MANY PRINCES? The Raj had to work through the native princes. – the Wali of Swat – the Jam of Nawanagar – the Maharajah of Patiala, whose official name was so long that the word Lord appeared 108 times, and to shorten it, the numbers 108 were put into it after the first use of the word Lord.1 &c.2 1 John Gunther, Inside Asia, 447. 2 Something to get straight right away. A Rajah is not the same as a Maharajah. The term raja means “one who rules.” It also means “one whose duty is to please.” This is the original Sanscritic meaning – implying, necessarily, the responsibility of a prince to his people. But the term, in its official sense, needs distinguishing. Rajah means “ king.” Maharajah means ‘great king.” Generally the title “His Highness” goes with Maharajahs, and some of only the very highest rank of Rajah. So You couldn’t have a Maharajah of Sangli – only a Rajah. But the head of Indore or Kalat or Travancore – all 19-gun salute men – would have to be Maharajahs. See Charles Allen and Sharada Dwivedi, Lives of the 2 Even in 1900, India had 575 of them. Their domain – 822,000 square miles – or about 2/5ths of the subcontinent. Their subjects – 72.5 million people, or one in five in the subcontinent.3 The two biggest in the south were Mysore and Hyderabad. Hyderabad had 83,000 square miles to it. But all along the northern edge of India, they cluttered up the maps. -

VIDYA BHAWAN BALIKA VIDYAPITH Subject : Fine Art (painting) class : 12th science/com Date : 17/06/20 RADHAKISHOR MONDAL HISTORY OF INDIAN PAINTING History of Indian Flag A number of flags with varying designs were used in the period preceding the Indian Independence Movement by the rulers of different princely states; the idea of a single Indian flag was first raised by the British rulers of India after the rebellion of 1857, which resulted in the establishment of direct imperial rule. The first flag, whose design was based on western heraldic standards, were similar to the flags of other British colonies, including Canada and South Africa; its red field included the Union Jack in the upper-left quadrant and a Star of India capped by the royal crown in the middle of the right half. To address the question of how the star conveyed "Indianness", Queen Victoria created the Knight Commander of the Order of the Star of India to honour services to the empire by her Indian subjects. Subsequently, all the Indian princely states received flags with symbols based on the heraldic criteria of Europe including the right to fly defaced British red ensigns. A proposed flag for India from 1904, as seen in an Anglo- Indian weekly. The dark blue band represented Hindus and Buddhists, the green band represented Muslims, and the light blue band represented Christians. The vertical purple band on the left side contained the stars from the Orion constellation, which represented the provinces and states. The surrounding red border symbolised India being kept united and whole by British rule. -

CHAPTER 3 THE CREATION OF DIFFERENCE For the Rede Lecture at the University of Cambridge in 1875, after his return from seven years as law member of the Viceroy's Council in India, Henry Maine set out to explain 'The Effects of Observation of India on Modern European Thought'. India shared with Europe, he said, as Sanskrit scholarship since the time of William Jones had revealed, a 'whole world' of Aryan institutions, customs, laws and beliefs. India was thus part of that 'very family of mankind to which we belong'. Yet, he went on, those Aryan institutions had 'been arrested in India at an early stage of development'. The country was, as a result, 'a barbarism', but it remained one which 'contains a great part of our own civilisation, with its elements as yet inseparate and not yet unfolded'. India was implicated with Britain, somewhat paradoxically, in a common origin, and yet was fundamentally different. In much the same way, the British were, in Maine's view, at once agents of 'pro- gress', charged with setting India on the road to modernity, and at the same time custodians of an enduring India formed forever in antiquity. As Maine put it in the conclusion to his Rede lecture, India's rulers had to keep their watches set simultaneously to two longitudes. Throughout the later nineteenth century, as they constructed their 'India', the British had always to negotiate this disjuncture: between an acknowledgement of similarity, and an insistence upon difference. The task was never to be easy, nor was the result to be a coherent ideology of rule.1 For men like Maine, India was Europe's past, or rather its various pasts. -

Iqbal and Quaid’s Vision of Pakistan Zamir Akhtar Khan∗ Abstract Our thesis, in brief, is that it was the dream of a philosopher (Iqbal) the interpretation of a statesman (i.e. Quaid-e-Azam) and the blood of a nation (Sacrifices offered by the Muslims of the Sub-Continent) that added one more colour to the multi- coloured map of the world. In the subsequent pages we will try to examine as to how we realized this goal. Key Words: Allama Iqbal, Quaid-e-Azam, Pakistan Introduction The Muslims ruled Indian Sub-Continent for centuries; but eventually they were dethroned by British traders and invaders. The Battle of 1857 was the turning point of their fortune as it was the culmination of their struggle for the retention of their socio-political control over the sub- continent. Their defeat in this war, however, sealed their fate for nearly a century. In August 1947 they were able to reclaim and regain their independence from British Imperialism. This intervening period was extremely critical and crucial for their survival. The main principles which were apparently supposed to inspire the Freedom Movement of the Sub-Continent were all meant to militate against the interests of the Muslims. For instance, the Movement was supposed to be inspired by nationalism (or the nation-state philosophy). Contentions of the Hindu leadership were that as Modern States were emerging in the name of their respective nations, India too has one nation, that is, the Indian Nation. Hindus and Muslims are an integral part of this nation. Muslims so to say, were denied the right and status of a distinct and separate nation. -
Why Flags Don't Change
LECTURE Dragons, Traditions, Emperors and Revolutions: An overview of flags and flag changes in Asia By Ralph Kelly At the Buenos Aires ICV, I presented a paper [1] that reviewed the changes in national flags in Latin America since independence, identifying patterns in the historical and current national flags with the aim of trying to understand why national flags change. Today, I will replicate that analysis for Asia. Firstly I need to define the area called “Asia”. “Asia” is as much a cultural concept as geographical area, so somewhat arbitrarily, I have chosen to restrict my vexillological analysis to include only the countries of Eastern and Southern Asia, excluding most Islamic countries of Central Asia as they have more historical and cultural affinity with the Middle East than with Eastern Asia.[2] In Latin America, independence from Spain or Portugal was a convenient starting point for my analysis. However in Asia, the colonial experience was far more diverse and in many ways had less impact on the nations in the region than in Latin America. The major Asian nations can date their foundations to the 12th and 14th Centuries and their cultures even earlier. For example, with a traditional date of Vietnamese independence of 939, the period of French colonialism from 1858 to 1954 can be regarded as merely an interruption to national sovereignty. The latter of 1859, 150 years ago, or the date of the first known flag for a country is a convenient, but arbitrary starting point for my analysis of Asian national flags. As with all non-European countries, information on early flags is far less available and reliable than desired.
