The Journey of a Hero: Musical Evocations of the Hero’s Experience in The Legend of Zelda Jillian Wyatt In fulfillment of M.M. in Music Theory Supervised by Dr. Benjamin Graf, Dr Graham Hunt, and Micah Hayes May 2019 The University of Texas at Arlington ii ABSTRACT Jillian Wyatt: The Journey of a Hero Musical Evocations of the Hero’s Experience in The Legend of Zelda Under the supervision of Dr. Graham Hunt The research in this study explores concepts in the music from select games in The Legend of Zelda franchise. The paper utilizes topic theory and Schenkerian analysis to form connections between concepts such as adventure in the overworld, the fight or flight response in an enemy encounter, lament at the loss of a companion, and heroism by overcoming evil. This thesis identifies and discusses how Koji Kondo’s compositions evoke these concepts, and briefly questions the reasoning. The musical excerpts consist of (but are not limited to): The Great Sea (Windwaker; adventure), Ganondorf Battle (Ocarina of Time; fight or flight), Midna’s Lament (Twilight Princess; lament), and Hyrule Field (Twilight Princess; heroism). The article aims to encourage readers to explore music of different genres and acknowledge that conventional analysis tools prove useful to video game music. Additionally, the results in this study find patterns in Koji Kondo’s work such as (to identify a select few) modal mixture, military topic, and lament bass to perpetuate an in-game concept. The most significant aspect of this study suggests that the music in The Legend of Zelda reflects in-game ideas and pushes a musical concept to correspond with what happens on screen while in gameplay.

I'll pick up part two of a more story oriented journal here, right-handed blue-hearted style ... WARNING: Unmarked spoilers will appear in the comments. It's been so long since I came to the cannon tutorial room before having the Ball and Chain. Heh. E Yeah! e 29 r 102 D Advertisement Share this Post 1 Tweet 2 Share Embed Comment Stagger 03/13/2016 2:30 PM I concluded my last post discussing how crafty Ashei and Yeto's roles were in getting here, disarming the battle w/ a snow beast notion. Yeta's transformation into Blizetta is the payoff. It's a gorgeous fight in HD, and the creepy organ work suits it perfectly. So is this King Zora's mansion? I just noticed that the goat portraiture is from inside the house, but pictures of the City in the Sky? E Yeah! e 2 D Stagger 03/13/2016 3:02 PM Boy, not visiting Telma's Bar at all really rips the drama out of the dialogue w/ Rusl. Continuing from my last post, while the second leg of the Mirror shard segment doesn't directly involve Link's charges in Kakariko, it does involve Colin's father. Sustained effort to maintain the initial heroic motivation hanging by a thread ... but in tact. What is he talking about btw? ToT = Sealed Temple..

  • Analyzing Modular Smoothness in Video Game Music
Analyzing Modular Smoothness in Video Game Music Elizabeth Medina-Gray KEYWORDS: video game music, modular music, smoothness, probability, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Portal 2 ABSTRACT: This article provides a detailed method for analyzing smoothness in the seams between musical modules in video games. Video game music is comprised of distinct modules that are triggered during gameplay to yield the real-time soundtracks that accompany players’ diverse experiences with a given game. Smoothness —a quality in which two convergent musical modules fit well together—as well as the opposite quality, disjunction, are integral products of modularity, and each quality can significantly contribute to a game. This article first highlights some modular music structures that are common in video games, and outlines the importance of smoothness and disjunction in video game music. Drawing from sources in the music theory, music perception, and video game music literature (including both scholarship and practical composition guides), this article then introduces a method for analyzing smoothness at modular seams through a particular focus on the musical aspects of meter, timbre, pitch, volume, and abruptness. The method allows for a comprehensive examination of smoothness in both sequential and simultaneous situations, and it includes a probabilistic approach so that an analyst can treat all of the many possible seams that might arise from a single modular system. Select analytical examples from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Portal

  • Queering an Icon: the Legend of Zelda and Inclusive Diversity
Queering an Icon: The Legend of Zelda and Inclusive Diversity Kyle Schrader Classical Studies I. Introduction: The Legend of Zelda and Queer Theory When analyzing media for structures and communications that inform and construct personal identity, it is always of extreme importance to focus on the main character of relevant stories, films, shows, and video games. For video games in particular, the main character serves as the player’s interactive avatar with the game world, a stand-in for themselves that serves as their contextual point for navigating the experiences within the game. In their work Toxic Geek Masculinity in Media, Anastasia Salter and Bridget Blodgett identify the consistent use of white male avatars in video games to restrict the ability of non-white, non-male, non-heterosexuals to properly identify with their liaison into the game worlds. This is an extremely valid criticism of the game industry at large, but one of their primary examples leads to a major point of contention.i In tracing the lineage of white male protagonists in video games, the authors of Toxic Geek Masculinity set Link from The Legend of Zelda series firmly in their sights as the stereotypical white, male, blonde hero with a princess to save; part of the strain of straight white male characters that fail to represent all gamers equally and, in fact, actively push those outside the archetype away from the medium.ii Their analysis of Link and the tropes of protagonists in video gaming ignore the nuances of the communities surrounding such characters and how interaction with the art and game themselves can help to alleviate these concerns, though it is through these communities that the games and characters are disseminated to the public.

  • (Re-)Balancing the Triforce: Gender Representation and Androgynous Masculinity in the Legend of Zelda Series
ISSN: 1795-6889 www.humantechnology.jyu.fi Volume 15(3), November 2019, 367–389 (RE-)BALANCING THE TRIFORCE: GENDER REPRESENTATION AND ANDROGYNOUS MASCULINITY IN THE LEGEND OF ZELDA SERIES Sarah M. Stang York University Canada Abstract: The Legend of Zelda series is one of the most beloved and acclaimed Japanese video game franchises in the world. The series’ protagonist is an androgynous male character, though recent conversations between Nintendo and players have focused on gender representation in the newest title in the series, Breath of the Wild. Considering these discussions, this article provides an analysis of Link, the protagonist and player character of The Legend of Zelda series. This analysis includes a discussion of the character’s androgynous design, its historical context, official Nintendo paratextual material, developer interviews, and commentary from fans and critics of the series. As an iconic androgynous character in an incredibly successful and popular video game series, Link is an important case study for gender-based game scholarship, and the controversies surrounding his design highlight a cultural moment in which gender representation in the series became a central topic of discussion among players and developers. Keywords: video games, feminism, gender, Legend of Zelda, Nintendo, androgyny. ©2019 Sarah M. the legend of zelda twilight princess download wii iso The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess ROM. Considering how appealing The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker was with its cartoon-style cel-shaded graphics, fans were expecting that the next Legend of Zelda release for the Gamecube should follow in Wind Waker’s footsteps with the same look. But with Nintendo’s video presentation during E3 on May 2004, Legend of Zelda fans got the surprise of their lives. Gamers got a glimpse of the upcoming Zelda title for the Gamecube which, instead of using the cartoony look everyone was expecting, used more “realistic” looking graphics making the game have a more mature appeal. And of course the game became one of the most anticipated Legend of Zelda releases ever. Twilight Princess takes place after the events of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time where we find Link settling in a peaceful village called Ordon. One day, the village is attacked by unknown monsters and takes away some of the village’s children and so Link sets out to rescue them, but as he moves out to find the missing children, Link gets faced with the Twilight and a shadow beast appears and drags him into the Twilight, transforming him into a wolf and getting him captured. But luckily, an imp named Midna appears and releases Link from captivity and leads him back to Princess Zelda. Link learns from Midna that Zant, King of the Twilight Realm has defeated the Guardians of Light and is crossing over to our realm and spread darkness all over the land.
