Together with our partners, we sustained our city-wide no kill status by ensuring that 93% or more of the homeless animals who entered local shelters were adopted into loving homes. The excitement grew in 2015 as we finally began construction on our long-awaited new shelter! Many of you have been our friends since before the devastating fire in 2007 destroyed our shelter and claimed the lives of 86 animals. Seeing this dream of a new shelter turn into a reality is an honor and a privilege! As our new shelter builds, so does our commitment to the community. We are steadfast in our mission to be a resource for local pet owners and their companion animals. In addition to caring for thousands of homeless animals in Jacksonville each year, we also offer: Fauna arrived at JHS with a broken leg and a gunshot wound! A skinny, black dog arrived as a stray at the city shelter on July 30th, 2014. Sallie was 20 lbs. underweight with double ear infec- tions, heartworms, and a painful skin issues. On top of her health issues, Sallie did not have a lot of experience with people or living in a home. Months went by with no family in sight. JHS transferred her to our care in February 2015. Our staff worked with Sallie to improve her manners and showcase her spirit. A year passed and Sallie was still waiting in the shelter. JHS doubled their efforts – showcasing her on the news, giving her a billboard with help from our friends at Comcast Outdoor and plastering the internet with pleas. Finally – in October, 15 long months later – a man named Chris saw a video of Sallie and knew Executive Director, Denise Deisler, accepts Petco Foundation’s she was the one for him.
