ROBERTS A.A., General Studies, Portland Community College, 2004 B.A., Speech Communication, Oregon State University, 2008 M.A., Interdisciplinary Studies, Oregon State University, 2011 ABSTRACT Over the past decade, sexual orientation and identity has increasingly been added to state and federal anti-discrimination laws, prompting a rhetorical situation by the Christian Right in attempts to exempt themselves from upholding anti-discrimination laws pertaining to sexual identity and orientation. This study analyzes the Mormon and Gay website—a website dedicated to advancing the position of the Mormon Church on issues of non- heterosexuality. Utilizing rhetorical textual analysis, I develop two theoretical frameworks: (lie)alectics and dequeerification to demonstrate how the discourse under examination attempts to appear non-homophobic while maintaining homophobic church doctrine. I argue that this model stands to influence the First Amendment in extending the Free Exercise clause to allow religiously-identified individuals to police and punish non-heterosexual behaviors. Additionally, this research calls for the reinforcement of the Establishment clause of the First Amendment, which restricts the federal government from establishing a national religion or to privilege one religion over another. New research shows that in addition to church leadership, this information was also presented during the neXt few months to a select group of highly educated Mormon men and women outside of church hierarchy. This group represented many aspects of Mormon belief, different areas of eXpertise, and varying approaches to dealing with challenging information. Their stories create a beautiful tapestry of Mormon life in the transition years from polygamy, frontier life, and resistance to statehood, assimilation, and respectability. A study of the people involved illuminates an important, overlooked, underappreciated, and eXciting period of Mormon history.

    Fear in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a Pathway to Reconciliation Meandering Philosophy and Musings Mingled with Scripture Revision B By Tom Irvine Email: [email protected] July 4, 2020 To fear God is to have absolute reverence and awe for an Almighty God, the Creator of all things. But the fear discussed in this paper is worry and dread over potential loss or calamity. This fear can include angst regarding a pending change, even though that change may be a needed growth opportunity, or otherwise bring blessings. The fear may be deeply rooted in a person’s subconscious due to genetic predispositions or past traumatic experiences. Furthermore, fear can exist on an individual or an institutional basis. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has accomplished an immeasurable amount of good for innumerable souls by providing a faith community for like-minded people, offering disaster relief to those in distress and in so many other ways. In addition, the LDS Church provides excellent education opportunities through its BYU campuses and the BYU Pathway program. 1 But the Church has traumatized others via certain fear-based policies and unrighteous dominion. Some trauma victims leave the Church and may never return. Others are the “walking wounded” who still participate in Church for social or altruistic reasons even though their bubbles have burst, or their “shelves” have broken. This paper is neither a vindication of the Church nor an expose. Rather it is a paper that wrestles with some real and messy issues with the hopes that some mutual understanding and peaceful reconciliation can be achieved.

    Latter-Day Saint Kinship: The Salvific Power of the Family Louisa Fowler Honors Defense Date: May 6th, 2020 ​ ​ Thesis Advisor: Professor Christopher Vecsey Defense Committee: Professor Benjamin Stahlberg Professor Steven Kepnes Introduction Since its inception in 1830, the people of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Days have evoked reactions from the public, ranging from confusion to outrage. In turn, the Church community has struggled to fit into secular society. The Church has constantly worked to craft and improve its relationship with the world. Recently, in 2018, Latter-Day Saint President Russell M. Nelson explained that the “Lord has impressed upon [his] mind the importance of the name he has revealed for the Church.”1 Latter-Day Saints reject the title ‘Mormons,’ asking outsiders to refer to members of the Church as Latter-Day Saints. Non-members of the Church misunderstand the Latter-Day Saint community, right down to its name. For the last two centuries, the Church community has been mysterious and confusing to the ‘outside world.’ What exactly do the Latter-Day Saints believe? Why do they behave the way that they do? Why do they seem so ‘other’, in relation to the greater society in which they live? This thesis will utilize the lens of the Latter-Day social structure-- from family life to marital expectations, to dating guidelines-- in order to demonstrate that this religion is unique due to its view of the family as sacred. An understanding of Latter-Day Saints’ family life is the key to understanding their Church because Latter-Day Saint religion is deeply relational, embedded in gender, marriage, and the family.

This thesis examines the representation of Mormon men in American film and television, with particular regard for sexual identity and the cultural association of Mormonism with sexuality. The history of Mormonism’s unique marital practices and doctrinal approaches to gender and sexuality have developed three common stereotypes for Mormon male characters: the purposeful heterosexual, the monstrous polygamist, and the self-destructive homosexual. Depending upon the sexual stereotype in the narrative, the Mormon Church can function as a proponent for nineteenth-century views of sexuality, a symbol for society’s repressed sexuality, or a metaphor for the oppressive effects of performing gender and sexuality according to ideological constraints. These ideas are presented in Mormon films such as Saturday’s Warrior (1989) as well as mainstream films such as A Mormon Maid (1917) and Advise and Consent (1962). ABSTRACT Individuals who identify as Mormon—adherents to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Church), a distinct and peculiar form of Christianity—and who also identify as gay or lesbian face a unique challenge to their mental health as they wrestle with the integration of their faith and their sexuality. Compounding this matter is the commonly held belief that one cannot authentically be gay and Mormon nor can one be a practicing Mormon and gay. As academics and professionals gain a more nuanced understanding of the complexity of (a) those who identify as both Mormon and a sexual/gender minority, and (b) of the Church itself, they will begin to deconstruct their own biases and increase their multicultural competence, thus becoming better equipped to address the mental health concerns of this particular sexual-minority group.
