Folketallsutviklingen I Troms Og Finnmark I 2019
The Secret Mormon Meetings of 1922
University of Nevada, Reno THE SECRET MORMON MEETINGS OF 1922 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History By Shannon Caldwell Montez C. Elizabeth Raymond, Ph.D. / Thesis Advisor December 2019 Copyright by Shannon Caldwell Montez 2019 All Rights Reserved UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA RENO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL We recommend that the thesis prepared under our supervision by SHANNON CALDWELL MONTEZ entitled The Secret Mormon Meetings of 1922 be accepted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS C. Elizabeth Raymond, Ph.D., Advisor Cameron B. Strang, Ph.D., Committee Member Greta E. de Jong, Ph.D., Committee Member Erin E. Stiles, Ph.D., Graduate School Representative David W. Zeh, Ph.D., Dean, Graduate School December 2019 i Abstract B. H. Roberts presented information to the leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in January of 1922 that fundamentally challenged the entire premise of their religious beliefs. New research shows that in addition to church leadership, this information was also presented during the neXt few months to a select group of highly educated Mormon men and women outside of church hierarchy. This group represented many aspects of Mormon belief, different areas of eXpertise, and varying approaches to dealing with challenging information. Their stories create a beautiful tapestry of Mormon life in the transition years from polygamy, frontier life, and resistance to statehood, assimilation, and respectability. A study of the people involved illuminates an important, overlooked, underappreciated, and eXciting period of Mormon history. -

On Danish-American Cultural Identity By Signe Sloth In 1967 an article was published which kick-started a discussion that is still going on among sociologists today. The subject of the article is American civil religion and the writer is the American sociologist Robert Bellah who claims that every nation and every people has a religious self-understanding. He advocates an American civil religion that is separated from other denominations and established religious institutions, but just like them demands recognition and understanding. Bellah defines this Civil Religion as " ... A genuine apprehension of universal and transcendental religious reality as seen in or . as revealed through the experience of the American people.1 His main argument is that in every inaugural address by any American president you can find a reference to God. This is not a specific god, but because God is a concept that almost everyone can relate to, whether it being the Christian, Muslim, Hindu or Jewish god, it is a reference that leaves no one out. -
The Blaenavon Ironmasters
THE BLAENAVON IRONMASTERS The industrial revolution would never have occurred if it were not for the risks and innovation of entrepreneurs. In south Wales, during the late eighteenth century, ironmasters set up a string of new ironworks, making the region the most important iron-producing region in the world. The labouring classes undeniably played a hugely significant role in the industrialisation process but it was the capital and experience of businessmen that made the industrial revolution a success. This article examines the history of the Blaenavon ironmasters and how they used their experience and their influence to create the town of Blaenavon. The Experience of the Blaenavon Ironmasters The leases for the area of Blaenavon, known as ‘Lord Abergavenny’s Hills’, were not renewed during the 1780s. The West Midlands industrialist, Thomas Hill (1736-1824), and his partners, Thomas Hopkins (d.1793) and Benjamin Pratt (1742-1794), seized the opportunity to invest in the Blaenavon site, which they knew was rich in mineral resources. The businessmen invested some £40,000 into the ironworks project and erected three blast furnaces. It was an incredibly risky venture but the three men were confident that the enterprise would be a large-scale success and that their investment would provide considerable returns. The experience that all three men had acquired in iron-making, business and banking, proved invaluable in numerous ways. Family Background Thomas Hill, the leading partner, came from a very wealthy industrial background. He was a successful Worcestershire banker and ran Wollaston slitting mill. Hill had also inherited a considerable fortune from his father, Waldron Hill (1706-88), and his uncle, Thomas Hill (1711-82), who were successful glassmakers at Coalbournhill, Stourbridge. -

Politics Among Danish Americans in the Midwest, ca. 1890-1914 by J0rn Brnndal During the last decades of the nineteenth century and into the twentieth, ethnicity and religion played a vital role in shaping the political culture of the Midwest. Indeed, historians like Samuel P. Hays, Lee Benson, Richard Jensen (of part Danish origins), and Paul Kleppner argued that ethnoreligious factors to a higher degree than socioeconomic circumstances informed the party affiliation of ordinary voters.1 It is definitely true that some ethnoreligious groups like, say, the Irish Catholics and the German Lutherans boasted full fledged political subcultures complete with their own press, their own political leadership and to some extent, at least, their own ethnically defined issues. Somewhat similar patterns existed among the Norwegian Americans.2 They too got involved in grassroots level political activities, with their churches, temperance societies, and fraternal organizations playing an important role in modeling a political subculture. -

Big Boulders of Tillite Rock in Porsanger, Northern Norway by Sven Føyn
Big boulders of tillite rock in Porsanger, Northern Norway By Sven Føyn. Abstract In 1959 numerous erratic boulders of tillite rock were discovered at the head of Austerbotn, the eastern arm of the Porsangerfjord. Some of the boulders are very big, håving volumes of up to 20 m . In 1965 another two boulders were found about 7 km to the south-east of the head of the fjord. The presence of the tillite boulders shows that Eocambrian tillite occurs . or at least has existed - in the Porsanger region. No deposits of tillite occurring in situ have, however, been reported from this district. The writer suggests that the source of the boul6erB i8 most probably in koralen, a depression in the Precambrian surface of the broad Lakselv valley, about 10 km south of the head of the Porsangerfjord. As there are no rock exposures in the bottom of Rocidalen on account of the thick cover of Quaternary deposits, this theory can hardly be proved. Possible future finds ok tillite boulders may bring other parts of the Lakselv valle/ into focus. Introduction Numerous erratic boulders of tillite rock occur west of the head of Auster botn, the eastern arm of the Porsangerfjord (lat. 70° 4' N, long. 24° 68' E). The boulders are found mainly on the slope facing the sea, bur also on the small hill north of the main road. No occurrence of tillite in solid rock has been reported from Porsanger. The nearest known in situ deposits ok Eocam brian tillite are those south of Laksefjord more than 50 kilometres to the NE, and ar Altafjord about 60 km to the west.
