During the last seventeen years of his life, Schiller struck up a productive, if complicated, friendship with already famous and influential <a href="http://www.poemhunter.com/johann-wolfgang-von- goethe/">Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe</a>. They frequently discussed issues concerning aesthetics, and Schiller encouraged Goethe to finish works he left as sketches. This relationship and these discussions led to a period now referred to as Weimar Classicism. They also worked together on Xenien, a collection of short satirical poems in which both Schiller and Goethe challenge opponents to their philosophical vision. <b>Life</b> Friedrich Schiller was born on 10 November 1759, in Marbach, Württemberg as the only son of military doctor Johann Kaspar Schiller (1733–96), and Elisabeth Dorothea Kodweiß (1732–1802). They also had five daughters. His father was away in the Seven Years' War when Friedrich was born. He was named after king Frederick the Great, but he was called Fritz by nearly everyone. Kaspar Schiller was rarely home during the war, but he did manage to visit the family once in a while. His wife and children also visited him occasionally wherever he happened to be stationed. When the war ended in 1763, Schiller's father became a recruiting officer and was stationed in Schwäbisch Gmünd. The family moved with him. Due to the high cost of living—especially the rent—the family moved to nearby Lorch. -

ON THE LIFE AND WRITINGS OF SCHILLER, By Hermann Baar, Ph. Dr. [ R e a d 11t h D e c e m b e r , 1862.] T h e r e is not a man in the whole history of her literature of whom Germany is prouder than of Schiller the poet. His great popularity is not limited to his native country, hut it extends wherever poetry, truth and noble aspirations are valued as a principal means of raising the greatness of man. Johann Friedrich Schiller was born on the 10th of Novem ber, 1759, in Marbach, a little town belonging to the king dom of Wurtemberg. The romantic scenery of his native country, Suabia, and the impressions which his noble soul received from his tender hearted mother, were the first influences which kindled in the boy a fire of inspiration for the good and beautiful, which afterwards shone so resplendent from the radiant mind of our great poet. When six years old, the fond and kind Moser, minister of the Suabian village of Lorch, instructed the boy in the Greek and Latin languages. Schiller speaks later with great affection of his master ; nay, he gives him an everlasting monument of remembrance in his first drama, “ The Robbers,” wherein he introduces him as the kind, conciliatory “ Pastor “ Moser.” At the removal of Schiller’s parents to Ludwigsburg, then the residence of the Duke, the growing boy was placed in the grammar-school of the town, where, under the superinten dence of the head master, Jahn, he made considerable progress in all the various branches of knowledge, but particularly in Latin, It seems as if. -

FRIEDRICH SCHILLER.^ BY THE EDITOR. A T AY nintli, the centenary of Schiller's death, is approaching; iVX and vast preparations are being made to honor the great German poet on the memorial day of the completion of his re- markable life. Friedrich Schiller is not merely a great poet, he is great as a man, as a thinker, and as a leader in the progress of hnmanity. lie is a disciple of Kant, but not his blind follower. He applies Kant's philosophy to practical life, but works it out in his own way. Especially in his religious convictions Schiller is far ahead of his time. He points out a wa\- of conservative advance along the lines of liberty and reverence, and so the opposition in which he stands to the narrow dogmatism of his age, is not a lack of religion but the surest evidence of a dee]) religious spirit. It pervades all his works and makes him a ])rophet of the religion of the future, a priest on the altar of mankind, and a poet of the eternal ideals of life. THE POET'S BIOGRAPHY. The great poet's father, Johann Kaspar Schiller, was born Oc- tober ij, 1723. in Bittenfeld, near Waiblingen. He was" the son of Johann Schiller, the mayor of the village, and his wife, Eva Maria, whose maiden name was Schatz. Schiller's father was a military surgeon. He served both as soldier and as army physician, especially in Holland. After his marriage, in 1749, he settled in Marbach. In 1753 he entered the Wiirttemberg army and fought against Prussia in 1758. -

This article offers the first editions with a commentary of An- cient Greek translations by Graefe of the prologue to Friedrich Schiller’s Bride of Messina (Die Braut von Messina oder die feindlichen Brüder) and the poem Modesty, by the Russian poet Gavriil Derzhavin (1743–1816). The article deals with the undated and probably unpublished manuscript which seems to be a small Greek anthology of eleven poems in various metres: iambic trimeter, dactylic hexameter, elegiac distich, Sapphic stanza, and the prose exhortation, written in the hand of Graefe and stored in the Manuscript Department of the Russian Na- tional Library in St Petersburg, among the papers of I. -

Eight years after the beginning of the French Revolu- Ttion, all hopes which had initially been placed in this uprising were dashed by the bloody terror of the Jacobins and the guillotine. The attempt to bring the Ameri- can Revolution back to Europe had failed. In answer to this failure, Friedrich Schiller, the great German poet and drama- tist, had already shown, in 1795, in his letters On the Aesthetical Education of Man, how the natural state, which depends solely on raw power, can be replaced by a state of reason, which takes into account the dignity of the free man. This aim could only be attained through the education of man into a self- conscious, responsible citizen, and only the fine arts could lead him there, because they alone address man in his entirety, and set into motion simultaneously his sensuous and his spiritual nature.
