ON THE LIFE AND WRITINGS OF SCHILLER, By Hermann Baar, Ph. Dr. [ R e a d 11t h D e c e m b e r , 1862.] T h e r e is not a man in the whole history of her literature of whom Germany is prouder than of Schiller the poet. His great popularity is not limited to his native country, hut it extends wherever poetry, truth and noble aspirations are valued as a principal means of raising the greatness of man. Johann Friedrich Schiller was born on the 10th of Novem ber, 1759, in Marbach, a little town belonging to the king dom of Wurtemberg. The romantic scenery of his native country, Suabia, and the impressions which his noble soul received from his tender hearted mother, were the first influences which kindled in the boy a fire of inspiration for the good and beautiful, which afterwards shone so resplendent from the radiant mind of our great poet. When six years old, the fond and kind Moser, minister of the Suabian village of Lorch, instructed the boy in the Greek and Latin languages. Schiller speaks later with great affection of his master ; nay, he gives him an everlasting monument of remembrance in his first drama, “ The Robbers,” wherein he introduces him as the kind, conciliatory “ Pastor “ Moser.” At the removal of Schiller’s parents to Ludwigsburg, then the residence of the Duke, the growing boy was placed in the grammar-school of the town, where, under the superinten dence of the head master, Jahn, he made considerable progress in all the various branches of knowledge, but particularly in Latin, It seems as if. -

H. C. ANDERSEN’S ‘SCHILLER FAIRY TALE’ AND THE POST-ROMANTIC Tale RELIGION OF ART [ HEINRICH DETERING ABSTRACT In his story ‘Den gamle Kirkeklokke’ [‘The Old Church Bell’], Andersen transforms, rein- terprets, and dissolves Schiller’s popular poem ‘Das Lied von der Glocke’ [‘The Song of the Bell’] into prose. Written for the Schiller celebrations in 1859, it re-establishes the Roman- tic cult of the artist under profoundly changed cultural conditions. The article examines Andersen’s complex relationship with the Weimar culture and reveals the hidden autobio- ] graphical patterns in his Schiller narrative. By adopting Schiller’s role for himself and at the same time linking it to the biography of Thorvaldsen, Andersen manages to bridge the only recently developed national gap between Danish and German culture. He simultane- ously arranges the story as a critical commentary on his own Romantic tale ‘Klokken’ (‘The Bell’). This being the case,T the question arises as to whether their present publication is justified. Today, when the problem of German literature or culture is discussed, one very often encounters the prejudices of those who will hear nothing of an examination or re-examination of such questions. The problem of German culture is generally posed abstractly and, therefore, necessarily answered abstractly and falsely. One answer is a blunt rejection of the whole of German culture. As a profession of anti-Fascism this seems very radical. In reality, this radicalism is more than dubious. For is an anti-German attitude really a guarantee of anti-Fascism or even of a position against reac tion ? In the ranks of anti-German politicians, writers, etc.
